Barbara Jean Gould Newton

June 10, 2009 Barbara Jean Gould Newton, 87, died peacefully at the home she loved on June 10, 2009. She was born in Cortland, NY on August 24, 1921, the daughter of the late William and Lena Sager Gould. She graduated from St. Mary's School, class of 1939 and the Cortland Conservatory of Music. She graduated from the College of Fine Arts at Syracuse University in 1943, with a degree in Music Education. While at Syracuse she was a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota Music Honorary and Theta Phi Alpha Sorority. She was the music director at Richmondville School for three years. In 1946 she married Dr. Wright Newton, DVM. They moved to Cazenovia in 1949. She was the organist and music director at St. James Church for 36 years. Additionally, she accompanied various musical groups throughout the community. She was predeceased by her husband in 1984. She is survived by her sister, Helen G. Meyer of Cortland, NY; children, William (Renee) Newton of Buffalo, NY, Lucy Murphy (Jim) of Cortland, NY, Amy (Jim) Honig of Syracuse, NY, Nancy (Paul) Weiskotten of Cazenovia, NY, Mark (Kelly) Newton of Round Lake, NY, Mary (Kevin) Dewan of Cazenovia, NY; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian of Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. James Church, 6 Green Street, Cazenovia. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Cazenovia.
