I was only able to meet Marvin once but I remember so well his kindness and warmth . His impressive clock collection and knowledge about them is still with me.

I was sorry to learn of the passing of Dr. Whiting. I fondly recall our meeting at Ms. me rue S. Jamison's home where I gave him documented accounts of my time in Birningham , 1963 to 1975. His dedication to his craft was commendable

Dr. Whiting was also my English and Religion teacher at Lovett. He always wore a jacket with suede patches on the elbows and he smoked a pipe filled with cherry tobacco during class. He is to this day one of the best teachers I ever had. Jane Canipe Rooks

To the Family of Dr. Whiting,
I just learned that he passed away. He was very generous to me as I researched connections between the quilter Harriet Powers and Birmingham, AL. He provided wonderful leads for me to follow, for which I'm grateful. Blessings to the family.

Marvin was a favorite cousin of mine who used to invite me to Columbus when he lived in a carriage house behind the palatial home of one of the Martin family members. He was such a kind and caring person. I attempted to get him to some Whiting family reunions but to no avail. I would certainly like to establish contact with his children. I will miss him.

Marvin was a friend of long ago when he and I and others helped form the Society of Alabama Archivists. I remember him as a kind, gentle, and helpful friend. I am glad he came my way.
God bless,

I knew him as Mr. Whiting when he was my 9th grade English teacher at Lovett in Atlanta. He terrified everybody in the class on his first day there in 1962 when he told us we'd read a book a week! He introduced us to Flannery O'Connor (whom he knew personally), Steinbeck (who won the Nobel Prize that year), Faulkner ("The Bear" with that interminable sentence), and for those of us who never read it, WINNIE THE POOH with its tremendous cast of memorable characters. I can trace my lasting love of literature to that class and appreciated Mr. Whiting for being a fine man and my best high school teacher. To his family, I extend my deepest, most sincere condolences.

I cherish the memories of my cousin Marvin, a man of great learning and gentle spirit. Some 50 years ago we had a great crisis in our family, and we shall forever be grateful for his love and active support in seeing us through that time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Matthew, Molly and their families.

Birmingham and indeed all of us who knew him have lost a treasure in Dr. Whiting, but Marvin will live on in his enormous legacy as well in the hearts and memories of those of us who came in contact with this extraordinary, humane and gifted man.

The world is dimmer without this truly remarkable gentleman. As a fellow librarian and Boston lover, Dr. Whiting and I bonded over many things, and I feel honored to have known him and am deeply saddened by his passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Birmingham is a better place for having Marvin as a resident and a collector. He was an original and thankfully he shared so much of himself with our city. He has left a wonderful legacy for each of us. Our prayers are with his family at this time of their loss.

A kind and generous man, a great intellect. I knew Mr. Whiting only casually, but truly enjoyed the few conversations I had with him. What a privilege to have known him.
