William Welke Obituary

William (Bill) Welke, 79, formerly of Kalamazoo, passed away with family by his side on Friday, November 16, 2012. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 1, at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 212 S. Park St., Kalamazoo. Bill's ashes will be buried in Augusta, WI, at a later date. Bill was born May 16, 1933, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the son of Reinhardt R. and Leone Swartz Welke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Welke, and his sister, Carol Cardinal. He is survived by twin daughters, Ann (Kevin) Nelson, and Mary (Jim) Coon, as well as by his only grandchild and joy of his life, Kennedy Grace. While teaching math in Texas during the Korean War, Bill took accounting classes by correspondence through the University of Wisconsin where he later completed a Ph.D. in the same area. He taught at the University of Washington in Seattle before accepting a faculty position at Western Michigan University, where he taught for over thirty years. During his time at WMU, he was active in Beta Alpha Psi, the national accounting fraternity. Bill not only loved to teach, but loved to learn. He was an avid reader, a world traveler, a strong tenor, and a not-half-bad fisherman. Bill was also an excellent cook who enjoyed sharing recipes with others and sharing the kitchen with his wife until her death in 1989. Following his wife's death, Bill devoted more and more of his time to traveling with friends and with his daughters, creating wonderful memories that will carry them through the difficult days to come. In 2011, Bill was blessed by the birth of his only grandchild, Kennedy, with whom he developed an immediate bond. She was the reason he moved from Kalamazoo, his home of 50 years, to Shawnee, KS. He was humbled by Kennedy's love of him and found great joy in his final months by being near her. Bill will be missed deeply as a father, grandfather, and friend, but will be remembered with happiness and gratitude. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to:

As a former student, I will remember Dr. Welke as a kind man who spoke lovingly of his family, who had a zest for life, and who gave my first daughter the book "Oh the Places You'll Go"! (It is fitting that book came from a man who went to so many places). He will be missed.

Bill was a friend, a colleague and an inspiration to those of us who remember his dedication to teaching and the College. Godspeed to his family in this difficult time.

Dear Mary and Ann, I was so sorry to hear of your dad's passing. So many of my memories at church include both you and your parents. I always think of the two of you when I hear O Holy Night...and will especially so this Christmas season. Please know I am thinking of you now and sending you hugs. Love you both!

Mary and Ann, please know you both are in my daily thoughts and prayers. The death of our parents is painful, but I hope you both are able to take joy in the fact that you had one heck of a wonderful father. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Bill was an all-the-time friend, a valued colleague and a respected college administrator. He switched hats from a much appreciated Canada fishing trip cook to beloved teacher with ease. His dedication and hard work contributed significantly to the attainment and maintenance of college accreditation and to the successful completion of two major university capital campaigns. We could not have done it without you, Bill.

Our hearts reach out to his lovely twin daughters Mary and Ann who, wonderfully for Bill, inherited the beauty and grace of their beautiful mother Vivian whom God took from us much to soon. Sadly, granddaughter Kennedy Grace, your joyful time with your dear grandfather has been much too brief. Please know that all of us will remember him with affection, respect and admiration.

I remember working registration in the old, cold and dank Reed field house. He was someone who could warm you up quicker than the coffee!
A joy to know.
