Mason Bond Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Jul. 17 to Jul. 19, 2013.
Mason Christopher Bond 1956 - 2013 With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Dr Mason Christopher Bond on Saturday, July 13, in Vancouver at the age of 57, surrounded by his loving family.

Mason was born on May 11, 1956 in Agassi, BC. He is survived by his wife of 34 years and best friend, Melanie; son, Andrew (Michelle); daughter, Celeste (Aidan); and brother, Brooke.

After graduating from BCIT, Mason worked as a laboratory technologist at St Paul's Hospital. Medicine intrigued Mason so much that he returned to school, attending UBC to become a doctor. After completing his internship at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria and his residencies in hematology and pediatrics at BC Children's Hospital, he worked at the Montreal Children's Hospital for 7 years. In 2000, he and his family returned to Vancouver.

Mason was a gifted pediatric oncologist at BC Children's Hospital, a cycling enthusiast, a music lover, a loving husband and father, and a wonderful, intelligent man.

The family would like to thank the caring staff in the bone marrow transplant, outpatient, and palliative care units at Vancouver General Hospital.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada would be most appreciated.

I am a nurse at the Montreal children´s hospital. I had no idea Dr Bond had passed away... I was just reminiscing about him with a colleague and decided to Google him to see whether he was still practicing. I am so sad to learn of his passing. I truly enjoyed working with him! He had a wonderful sense of humour and he was genuinely loved by his patients and his colleagues. I hope his suffering was brief.

I was shocked and saddened today to hear of the loss of one of the friendliest and best teachers I had during my residency at BCCH. Mason always had the patience to explain whatever needed explaining, for both patients and students. I am so sorry for your sad loss. He was a wonderful man whose presence in many lives will be sorely missed.

We are so sad to hear of Dr. Bonds passing. We were looking him up to see if we could bring our son to see him this spring. Our son was diagnosed with infant ALL in Jan 2012 when he was four months old and Dr. Bond just had such positive things to say about our little guy. He made the whole experience a little less horrible. We looked forward to his daily visit at the end of the day while we were in the hospital, he was so positive and was our favorite oncologist. We wanted to thank him for everything he said and did for us. Our son has just finishes his treament. The world has lost a treasure. Im so sorry.

I was shocked to hear about Dr. Bond's passing. We are going to Children's tomorrow for my daughter's final follow up appointment as she is now turning 18 and will no longer be going to BCCH. She was really looking forward to seeing him as he always has just the right thing to say to her. We first met him in September of 2000 when my daughter was diagnosed with ALL and he was positive right from the start and never let a negative thought get into our heads about the outcome of her treatment. He always had a smile and remembered all of Jessica's interests and hobbies and the things to make her feel more comfortable in such a tough situation. We send our condolences to his family which he spoke of often to us. We will miss him, he was a great doctor and a great man.

Dr. Bond treated my son Christopher from 3 1/2 to 7 years old for Leukemia. Chris is a happy, healthy 16 year old now. Dr. Bond was so very thoughtful, approachable, knowledgeable and I can honestly say we really looked forward to seeing him. Many times during the treatment he would pop up to the lab himself to take a look at Chris' blood personally to provide assurances for himself & our family.
Such a tremendous caring individual who was so down-to-earth and had an amazing bedside manner for the kids of all ages and their stressed parents.
What a loss to Childrens' Hospital.
To Dr. Bond's family, I'm so sorry about your loss. He was one of a kind.

He treated our son for hodgkins and we could not have even imagined such a kind, intelligent, caring doctor. We have nothing but the best memories of our visits to the hospital because of Dr. Bond. What a huge loss.

My thoughts are with your family. So many families have been touched by this wonderful person, physician, mentor
As a resident in pediatric training under Dr. Mason Bond while at the Montreal Children's, his compassion and caring was easily felt by all those around him. He has had such a positive impact on so many. Each one of us who had any contact with him will only carry forward for many generations the many things he taught us directly and indirectly.

My Family and I are saddened to have just heard this terrible news. Our Daughter, Kami had come into Dr. Bonds guidance in 2008 at BCCH. We first met him and had our first meeting to explain the procedure going forward for Kami's treatment. After Dr Bonds explaining and all his patience for our questions, he finally says "wow only 3 hours". As a worried parent he stayed there as long as we needed to make us as comfortable as possible. His smile and singing always put a smile on our face. I try to use him as an example of how to live my daily life. Our many condolences, Sunee Scherping and family.

Dr Bond was my oncologist for nearly 15 years considering I first saw him just after I turned two, and now I am nearing 17 years old. He was always a smiling, kind man who always made me feel at ease, despite some of the circumstances. Not only was he a great doctor, but he was a great man, and I know he will be missed by many. I know my family is appreciative of his large contribution to me being so healthy today, and I am just as thankful. My condolences to the family. Rest in Peace Dr. Bond. Thank you for everything.

Everyone who had still to meet Mason have lost something. He was a singularly positive and constructive person. I met him during my practicum year as a lab tech, and I can say for sure he has influenced my way of looking at my work in a postive way. He taught me something very simple, but fundamental: If you do it right, you get it right. Thank you, Mason. You will be missed by so many.

I truly believed that Dr. bond saved our daughter's life. When she was diagnosed with cancer, he was the rock that we looked to for guidance. I trusted him implicitly and felt that, as long as he was there, our little girl would be fine. Today she is well and healthy, and I am thankful every day that we had the blessing of Dr. bond in our lives.

My deepest condolences to his family and colleagues....and my heartfelt thank you for sharing Dr. Bond with us for the past few years.

I was the Teaching Technologist in the Transfusion Medicine Laboratory when Mason was a student during his training to become a Laboratory Technolgist. Although I never really saw him again after he left St. Paul's, I remember his intelligence and calm, gentle confidence. I am sure he was a wonderful Doctor. It is so sad he left us so soon.

We loved Dr Bond for the way he gave us hope and confidence during our grandson's bout with Cancer. He said he would be seeing our grandson again when he is in university. Now I am sad that Dr Bond will not be there, but still full of confidence for our grandson, thanks to the excellent treatment he received. Mike and Linda Foster

We are very sad to hear that Dr.Bond has passed away. He was our son,Nathan's oncologist. He was so good with our son as he was only 6 yrs.old when diagnosed with cancer. It is sad that a man who gave gave so much to help keep children alive with a deadly disease, has lost his to it. He was an amazing oncologist, and if it were not for him our son would not be here today. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family in this difficult time.

July 21, 2013

Our condolences to Dr. Bond's family and friends. Dr. Bond was our son's oncologist and he gave us strength, humour, and the unwavering belief that Benton would be well. Dr. Bond's smile would light the entire room. His sense of humour was a perfect match for our eight-year old son - bordering on inappropriate and usually involving body noises. When I couldn't seem to make it through another day, we would all come to see our lovely Dr. Bond and he would mock my colour-coded list of questions, tease Benton, make Samara giggle and give us enough emotionally to make it through our next challenge. Dr. Bond will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his family. He will forever be treasured by our family as an angel guiding us through our darkest hour.

Dear Melanie, Andrew and Celeste,
Renee and I would like to express our condolences on the loss of your wonderful husband and father. Who'd have thought, Melanie, on that Terry Fox run all those years ago, that we would be needing the help of your husband a few years later. He was truly the most incredible, compassionate and caring doctor that we could have had. It takes a special person to face what he did every day, and continue to do it with humour and love. I'll never forget his comparison of cancer treatment and cleaning dog poop off the carpet - unique and humorous and got his point across all at the same time. Mason was exactly what we needed at the darkest point of our lives, and we will never forget him. So very sad....

July 18, 2013

Dr. Bond, You are one in a million, an experiment they will never replicate no matter how many times or how hard they try. We loved you with our whole soul and will hold you in our hearts for eternity. You gave us life and we thank you for that. You made me crazy always expecting us to deliver more than we could, expecting us to make the impossible, possible. It was not an easy path, but, as you well knew, it was the correct path. Brendan landed in the Principal's office after every visit with Dr. Bond but the kids version, “You going to see Dr. Bond, Yeah, this is going to be great. Can't wait until you show us what he teachers you this time.” He was an awe-inspiring chemistry teacher with a knack for inspiring Science in children. It was by chance and good luck that our paths crossed that fateful day. We love you Dr. Bond. You will always be the one and only to us. Love Shannon and Brendan Whieldon, Langley.

Our condolances on your loss. Mason was our son's oncologist and provided him with amazing care and support from 2000 right up till last year. We always felt that he was like a guardian angel sent to us, as he was the most kind and compassionate doctor that has worked with our family. He saved our sons life, he made him smile during such difficult times when not much could, and he was a wonderful support to myself and the many other families in oncology at BCCH that were dealing with such scary circustances. If I had to pick anyone to hold my son's hand through such a scary oreal....it would be Mason. Thank you for sharing him with us. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
