William George Clemons

CLEMONS, WILLIAM GEORGE Age 85, died following a courageous battle with cancer on April 4. He was born the son of George and Amelia Clemons in Jackson, Michigan, where he spent the majority of his life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Norma Hutchinson from York, PA; sister, Marcia Macready (Sherman); sons, Barron (Diane), and Scott. He has two grandchildren, Kylie Morse (Nate) of Grand Rapids and Lauren Clemons of Glenwood, CO.; two step grandchildren Kristy Kale Bayer of Russellville, AR and Scott Kale (Lauren) of Anchorage, AL; and one step great grandchild, Brooks Morley Bayer. He was preceded in death by his step mother, Helen Goodrich; brother, Barron (Barbara); sister, Sue Smith (Pete); and sister, Barbara Walz (Kenneth). Bill graduated with honors from Jackson High School in 1946, where he was on the football and track team, and voted "All American" by the swim association. Bill graduated Cum Laude from Michigan State University in 1950 in mechanical engineering. He was a social member of the Sigma Nu, and a honorary member of Tau Beta Phi and Pi Tau Sigma fraternities, ROTC, and the swim team. After college, Bill moved to York, PA to work as a mechanical engineer and met and married his wife, Norma. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Air Force and served his country in the Korean War, where he reached the rank of Lt. Colonel. While stationed in Japan for three years, his wife and son, Barron joined him, and son Scott was born there. Upon discharge, he returned to Jackson, where he lived remainder of his life. He worked at Aeroquip for 16 years, and became a Registered Professional Engineer, then started Clemons Construction in 1976, which was later named Clemons and Sons, when his sons joined the company. Bill also was a long time member of the YMCA, where he was a member of the Masters swim team, and was rated in the top "10" in the country for his age group, and took a first place in Nationals in Ft. Lauderdale. He also was a member of the Country Club of Jackson, Christian Scientist Church, and Jackson Symphony. He was an avid stamp collector, photographer, and loved to travel domestically and internationally. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 11th at at Wetherby Funeral Home, 402 Wildwood Avenue, Jackson at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jackson Symphony, YMCA, Hospice, or Christian Science Church of Jackson.
