I worked with Rich for a number of years at U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in Portland, OR. He was stationed at Basket Slough National Wildlife Refuge. He was a great guy and a great employee. I wear a pin with his photo on it every year on 911, to remember this nice, brave guy who risked his life to attack the terrorists aboard Flight 93 on September 11th. I think of him often as I seen the news. And I wear the pin I have with his photo on it on every 9/11.

Wishing I could see his smile again. Sending thoughts to his sister, Lori, and all the family.

I worked with Rich Guadagno at Fish and Wildlife Service. He was the Refuge Manager at the Basket Slough National Wildlife Region in Region 1. He was a great person and employee. He lost his life saving people on Flight 97. I have a pin with his picture on it that I wear every year on 9/11. Just wanted to let his family & sister know he is not forgotten.

I worked with Rich when he was an employee of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. He was a fine person and a great employee. It was shocking to all of FWS Region 1 when he died while protecting Flight 93. We honor his service to our country, and we still miss him.

I met Rich when he was managing Basket Slough National Refuge in Oregon. I was just beginning my career in resource conversation, and his passion and ethics were an inspiration to me. I loved the refuge and felt that the land and the wildlife were well cared for because he demonstrated deep love and commitment for the place and the wild things there. He was a good man that is sorely missed by the many people he touched.

To our 9/11 Hero, Rich - Never Forgotten
Where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;
As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

From all the pictures I have seen of him made him look like a happy and kind person. What he did for his life was really admirable. Working to save and preserve the wildlife of our world. I would of loved to have spoken to him. Though he may be gone now he will never be forgotten.

I never had the honor of meeting you but our paths crossed on that day because of a job I had to do and people you knew. Your name will forever be etched in my mind and heart. Just know for 18 yrs on this day I have said a prayer, said your name and told my friends the story. You are and will always be remembered by me until the day I can no longer remember anything.
Rest in peace and love.

Sometimes this day comes along & I wonder - Did they forget? Do they really still remember? Our Country was united 16yrs ago. United in grief, united in patriotism, united in love.
We are so divided, now...
But STILL we are united in gratitude for your heroism & that of all on Flight 93.
You are NOT FORGOTTEN & will not be EVER!

The letter in the picture attached here was written by my grandson Taj (9yrs old at the time). It is the sentiment of my family and many other grateful citizens around the US, I'm sure.
We picked Richard as our family's 9/11 hero because I had met his parents by happenstance on a Memorial motorcycle ride in North Jersey just about a week or so after the attacks.
Then on one of our trips to Shanksville, I asked Taj & his friend to make something, on the long car ride, that we could leave on the fence at the burgeoning memorial.
He wrote this & then left it by Richard Guadagno's angel marker:
"Thank-you for saving many Americans lives. It could have been me, or my family or my friend. You are a Great American. You will be remembered in my heart forever. From: Taj. THANK U"

I attended at 9/ 11 memorial this week. A speaker said that 71 officers died on 9 /11. WHen it was over, I told him that the correct number of officers lost that day was 72. Richard being the last person recognized by the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Who was not initially counted. I will see that his sacrifice is not forgotten.

Richard-
I met your parents, your sister and her boyfriend at the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel on 9-12-02 and got to see them again on 9-10-06 at the memorial site. On our way out in 2002 my ladyfriend and I drove from Boston to Shanksville and stopped off at the Great Swamp Nat. Wildlife Refuge where you used to work. It was an odd coincidence running into them afterwards and explaining how we were just regular folks paying respects and that we hadn't lost anyone we knew... the memory of the Heroes of Flight 93 is with me every day.

Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Tartan

Tim Welch

November 6, 2008

In September of 2007 I visited the crash site of United Airlines Flight 93 in Shanksville Pennsylvania and was touched by all of the things that visitors placed at a makeshift memorial. All were personal items such as signs, fire helmets, toys, pictures, police patches and children's drawings attached to a fence. One thing that I found particularly interesting was the symbolism displayed on several homemade flags. It was a very moving experience.

As a retired police officer I was aware of the number of law enforcement officers who died in the World Trade Center attacks on 9/11/2001 and I wondered if any officers had perished on any of the hijacked aircraft that day. I found out that one passenger on Flight 93 was Richard Guadagno, an officer with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. His name is engraved on the wall of The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington DC along with 71 of his fellow officers who died that day at the World Trade Center.

As a snare drummer with a bagpipe band, I have had a lot of experience wearing kilts woven in Scottish tartan patterns. That is when I got the idea for the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Tartan. It would honor all of the 17,912 fallen U.S. law enforcement officers throughout history and incorporate the symbolism that I was so struck with at Shanksville.

I met with Rocky Roeger of USA Kilts and Celtic Traditions in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania and gave him my ideas for the tartan I wanted to design. I told him that I wanted to represent the following in the pattern:
The BLUE represents the living men and women who currently serve or are retired from Law Enforcement.
The two BLACK bars represent the 2 buildings of the World Trade Center (each bar is a tower) and the officers who died there. The 2 black bars contain 36 black threads each, for a total of 72, the number of officers who died on 9/11/2001.
The DARK BLUE line between the 2 black bars is there to represent the "Thin Blue Line" which is a colloquial term for police officers. It means that Law Enforcement officers are all that stand between citizens and criminals.
The GOLD and SILVER stripes represent the badges that officers wear.
The spot where the black stripes cross the silver and gold represents the mourning band that officers wear over their badges when a brother officer dies in the line of duty.
The GREEN stripe is to honor The Police Emerald Societies and the Irish-Americans who made such a large contribution to police work in the early years in the US when few people wanted to do the job

We petitioned the Scottish Tartan Authority for approval. They responded favorably and the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Tartan© is now an official tartan.

C.O.P.S., Concerns of Police Survivors, is a registered nonprofit charity that receives a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the kilts.
Because of Richard’s influence in my life police officers and supporters all over the country are proudly wearing kilts made from the tartan. You touched my life brother. Rest in peace.

I remember as if it were yesterday! It was the day that changed my life forever! I was a new employee to the US Fish and Wildlife Service at the Regional Office in Portland, OR and had spoken to Richard weeks before about filling a position for him. I never met him in person, but I remember he had just taken a Mgt/Supervisory position up at Humbolt Bay NWR and was well on his way in his career. I remember that he sounded very enthusiastic, energetic and was very ready to take on any duties that presented themselves in front of him.

His memory will live on....I will always REMEMBER!!!!!!!

Dear Guadagno Family,

I was struck by the description of Richard's work as I was looking at the tributes, for the first time, on this 7th anniversary of one of our nation's saddest days. I have been deeply and increasingly distressed in recent years at the continuing destruction of our beautiful earth and its magnificent animals, so the loss of a passionate advocate for the earth and the animals makes Richard's death all the more tragic for me. However, as his passion for earth and its creatures inspires me to follow in his footsteps, my heart is also comforted and my soul is lifted up by his death as well, for this day is not anywhere near as sad as it woulld be if Richard and his fellow passengers had not chosen to change history instead of become its victims. I shall strive humbly to honor Richard and his fellow passengers with my actions as well as with a grateful heart.

Most sincerely,

Peggy Childers

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

The horror of 9/11 took on new meaning for me when I discovered that Rich had lost his life aboard Flight 93. Mutual friends intro-
duced Rich and I the summer before he went to college. We had a mutual fondness for Bruce Springsteen, the beach and animals. After 9/11, I searched through boxes of pictures trying to find the one photo Rich had given me of himself - on the beach, of course.
Thank God I found it. I still look at it and remember that wonderful guy I met so many years ago. I knew then that he was destined for great things and would accomplish anything he set his mind to. We lost contact, but he will always hold a special place in my heart. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
