Brian Kinney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2001.
Engaging and Industrious

As a kid, Brian Kinney pumped gas at his family's Texaco station in Lowell, Mass., but even after college, when he put on a suit and started to work at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Boston, he spent Saturdays in his greasy old clothes, working alongside his dad. Mr. Kinney was grateful to his father for putting him through school, and he also loved catching up with customers' news. That was Mr. Kinney: equally comfortable in a white collar or blue one; tireless in his capacity for work; a friendly, enthusiastic fellow who asked "How are you?" before "Fill it up?" because he really wanted to know.

Decades earlier, Alison Hardy's father had worked at Kinney's. When she was 14, her father said she could cash her paychecks there. Brian wasn't yet allowed to handle money, but his father made an exception for Alison, so Brian had an excuse to talk with her when she came by. They married in 1998, settled in Lowell, visited their families weekly, planned to start their own.

At 28, the engaging, industrious Mr. Kinney had risen from intern to manager at Pricewaterhouse. He could have taken care of that California client by phone. But on Sept. 11, Mr. Kinney boarded United Airlines Flight 175 because he wanted to shake the client's hand and see how he really was doing.

Still a shock , I am so sorry for your loss, my dad Hank use to hang and work at the Gulf station for years . I grew up knowing a wee bit of George , Pete and your Dad Norman . Wonderful people and a respected place to get gas and have my car repaired .
Hank talked about you often, and went to your wedding . I called your Dad and his heart just poured out through his voice , " you were gone!"
May Gods peace cover each member of such a wonderful family, and you Brian will never be forgotten .

It's been a while since I posted and I just wanted to send my thoughts and prayers out to Brian's Family. He will never be forgotten. I visited the 9-11 Museum back in 2018 and the picture is, of course, Brian's name on the Memory Pool barrier.

I never had the pleasure to know you, but I work for JPMorgan and every year I sign up to receive a remembrance name and this year it was yours. I was 17 years old back then and it still brings me to my knees to recall the events of that day. I will think of you always and light a candle in your honor. I read many beautiful messages below from people who knew an loved you and will pray for them and you always.

I always think of Brian every September 11th but also whenever that terrible day is mentioned.

I used to stop at Kinney's to get gas and sometimes car repairs when I was in college and just always remembered him as a decent person (same for his brother).

It's cliched to write that after what happened but I thought it at the time, and same for his brother as they seemed to treat all people who went to Kinney's with respect.

I didn't know him well, just went to Kinney's often enough to make small talk while getting gas, nothing more than that.

I'll never forget getting the phone call around 2 PM that day and learning he was on the second plane.

May he rest in peace.

It's difficult to believe it's been 18 years since the tragedy of 9/11...still keep you in my thoughts (even though we never met) and I think of your Mom just as often - hope she is well. Prayers for all and you'll be in my thoughts tomorrow.

18 years old on 9/11 and now 18 years later. Its still hurts all the same. Half my life without you. The world is a darker place without your light. I would give anything to spend another day with you at the garage. Just to rewind time for one more day. You were the big brother I always wanted. You taught me so much about life and how valuable time is and to make the best of any situation.
I miss you dearly Brian. The family misses you but we know you're watching. Much love.
Thank you to those who are always commenting and keeping his memory alive. He is greatly missed and it shows.

Brian - I never had the opportunity to meet you in person. As destiny would have it, we spoke ahead of your trip and I could not meet you at the client site in California because I was on a business trip in Ireland. It was shocking news to learn of your fate. I tell my kids your story and it is my way of honoring the memory of a good person that I never met in person. God bless!

I went to high school in New Hampshire with Brian and we played on the football and baseball teams together. To this day, he is still one of the most passionate, honest, hard working, totally full-of-life people I've ever known. He was a leader in school, sports, the community and everybody liked him. I've always believed that in those final moments, Brian stayed strong, did everything he possibly could, comforted others who were scared, and took care of those passengers who needed someone like him.

I'm Brian's cousin and I think about him every day. Every year since that horrible day I ask that people light a candle, hang a flag and say a prayer in honor of his life and rememberance of his beautiful soul taken far to early. I rememeber playing with him as kids up at the farm, getting snowmobile rides from he and his brother. Life got busy for everyone but at every wedding all the cousins picked up were we left off... laughing dancing and having a blast together his dance moves were priceless. I will always take this day in particular to rememeber all those who were taken and send love to heaven for My cousin Brian. god bless you Brian, Much love

I remember that day very much. I am Brian's cousin and godchild. I know many people say I was too young to understand what happened, but I'm not. He was always a kind and careing person. He was also a true "big kid at heart." He would come over to help my parents with the company and he would end up watching tv or playing games with my sister and me. I remember the last movie we watched with him was The Road to Eldarado. He is loved and missed very much.

To Alison, Norman, Darlene & Timmy: Even though it has been two years, I still think of Brian and the wonderful man he became. We didn't frequent the gas station often, but when we did he had a hug and a smile for his old neighbors. My remembrance of Brian is as a young boy who played with my kids and always had a smile on his face. We lost touch over the years but he still remembered us when he did see us.
