Peter Ganci Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2001.
A Leader With Modesty

The thing about Peter J. Ganci was, he didn't flaunt it. He was just a regular guy living with his family on Long Island, so at peace with himself that if you asked him what he did for a living, he would just say, "I'm a fireman in the city."

"He would never say that he was the highest-ranking uniformed officer in the department," said Fire Marshal Steven Mosiello, his longtime friend and executive assistant.

Most of the time, Pete Ganci, who was 54, was that regular guy down the street who happened to be a decorated hero and boss: the guy who loved to laugh, golf, go clamming in Great South Bay. On Deputy Fire Commissioner Lynn Tierney's desk is a photograph of him in formal uniform — five stars on his collar and all — and a pink headband that says "Happy Birthday." The photograph's meaning is simple, she said: "He was man enough to wear a pink headband that said `Happy Birthday.'"

Then there were those times when Pete Ganci was Chief Ganci, as on that last morning. In the eerie calm between the collapse of the two towers, Deputy Fire Commissioner Michael Regan recalled, "Pete Ganci directed every civilian and every firefighter to go north. He went south."

Peter Ganci, Top Fire Chief, Dies at 54 in Tower Collapse
By GLENN COLLINS
Peter J. Ganci, the New York City Fire Department's highest-ranking uniformed officer, died on Tuesday in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. He was 54.

His death was confirmed yesterday by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen.

Chief Ganci, who held the title chief of department, had been working his multichannel radio, standing at the center of the smoky chaos in front of 1 World Trade Center on Tuesday and personally commanding the rescue efforts when the building collapsed. He and the mayor had spoken only minutes before.

In a news conference late Tuesday night, the mayor described how earlier in the day, as he was leaving for his own command post, he chatted briefly with Chief Ganci and told him, "God bless you, Pete."

The chief "would never ask anyone to do something he didn't do himself," said Howard Safir, who was his direct superior as fire commissioner from 1994 to 1996, the year Mr. Safir was named police commissioner. "It didn't surprise me that he was right at the front lines. You would never see Pete five miles away, in some command center."

A 33-year department veteran, Chief Ganci managed all uniformed personnel, and was also responsible for the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.

Mr. Ganci joined the department in the 1960's, serving in engine and ladder companies in Brooklyn and the Bronx during an era of crisis, when fire companies battled arson fires almost continually in the city's poorest neighborhoods.

He rose to lieutenant in 1977, captain in 1983 and battalion chief in 1987, and was promoted to deputy chief in 1993, when he was working in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Chief Ganci was placed in charge of the Bureau of Fire Investigation in 1994 after Mr. Safir was appointed fire commissioner. "There was a problem between the fire marshals and the uniformed firefighters," Mr. Safir said. "I needed a uniformed chief who could bring them together. It was a highly charged situation, and in months, he turned the fire marshals into a great operation."

In 1997 Chief Ganci was appointed chief of operations, the second highest uniformed position in the Fire Department. In 1999, he was named acting chief, after his predecessor was injured in a car accident. His appointment became official last January.

A resident of Massapequa, N.Y., he is survived by his wife, Kathleen; two sons, Peter 3rd, a firefighter assigned to Ladder Company 111 in Brooklyn, and Christopher; and a daughter, Danielle.

Mr. Ganci,
It is bittersweet you perished trying to rescue lives at the Twin Towers. You seemed like a respected FDNY chief who would do anything to face danger and come out of it.

I can imagine how daunting it was for your men to reach floor 92 of tower 1, then contain several flames on six stories. Sending my condolences to your loved ones.

To the Ganci family, my most heartfelt condolences. I knew of Pete through my best friend Tommy Gambino who as Pete died as one of New York's bravest. To his honor the men and women of the military named manas air base in kyrgistan the Peter Ganci Air base. The mural of Pete on one of the walls at the air base and the memorial leading to the Commanding Officers offices was fitting and a reminder that freedom is never free and the first heroes of the war on terror were the brave men and women of New York city. I have the distinct honor to be on the wall of fame at Farmingdale High School along with Pete and Tommy, I am humble and in awe that I am in the company of these heroes. God bless you, you are always in my prayers and will never be forgotten.

I was deployed as Chief of the Command Post at Ganci Air Base, Kyrgyzstan in early 2002. Peter has had a place in my heart since then. Yesterday, I took my family to the Healing Field in Sandy, Utah where I introduced my family to the flag that was placed in honor of Peter. My heart goes off to all the victims, but especially to the first responders like Peter that run into danger instead of away from it.

To the Ganci Family,
I am a third grade teacher in SA, TX. When I came across this book, I couldn't believe it. My dad and Pete Ganci's dad grew up together in New York and were friends. When I was little, your grandparents had a yearly picnic on L.I. I remember that house was always filled with kids. My Dad passed away in 1999 and did not live to see 9/ll. I believe Pete and I were the same age and I think he lived in the same neighborhood as my Dad - Ridgewood, New York.
Thank you for writing this book. I look forward to sharing it with my class on September 11th.
Bless you all,
Camille Nevins (Pat D'Agrosa's daughter)

Dear Mr. Ganci,
Thank you for doing all that you did on the day many years ago when you lost your life. I’m Nate Bissinger. I am in the seventh grade at Nagel Middle School in Cincinnati. We were given the assignment to write a letter to the men and women who gave their lives on the eleventh of September in 2001. I took the assignment as an opportunity to tell you about how you will be remembered. Not only as a firefighter, but as a hero. A hero is someone who is willing to give anything and everything in order to help someone else. A hero can be anything from a teacher trying to save a student’s grades, to a man who went running into a burning building trying to save a person’s life.

I am sure that your wife, Kathleen, your sons Peter and Christopher, and your daughter Danielle miss so much. You served as a fire fighter for more than half of your life and to me that is one f the most amazing things I have ever heard. This country was certainly a much better place with you in it.

Your devotion to this country will never be forgotten and your memory will never die. Although the terrorists did reach their physical that day, we will never let their goal to crush our spirits be reached. Every September eleventh I will remember you and the ultimate sacrifice that you made to our country.

Again thank you very much Mr. Ganci.

Sincerely,
Nate K. Bissinger

Dear Mr. Ganci,
A hero is someone that helps people in their time of need. Someone who puts their safety second and the victims safety first. A hero is someone who is kind, caring, and friendly. They need to be modest, and they need to be brave. On September 11th, 2001 you were all of those things and more. Your actions made you a hero to me.
You are a good man that made a great sacrifice. That sacrifice was in two parts. Your life was one part and leaving your friends, your wife Kathleen and your three children and not being able to golf and clam was the other part. Words are not enough to say how you’re family, your wife Kathleen and your three children, and other family’s thank you on this day. You decided to help others in the Twin Towers accident and you made the decision, knowingly, or unknowingly, to become a hero to everyone.
You started in the 1960’s, but you were true to the end. You were the highest ranking uniformed officer in the department and very good at it too. Your family, your friends, the city, the state and the United States of America thank you. You had absolutely no idea what was going to happen that day, but you stuck with it and you will never be forgotten.

Again, thank you so much for your service,

Katie Gothard

The dictionary defines a hero as someone who puts the needs of others before themselves. I want to thank you for being a hero on September 11, 2001. I want to thank you for being there on that tradgic day of the twin tower attack. You saved plenty of peoples lives, you are a true hero to me.

Dear Mr. Ganci:

I think a hero is someone who puts their fear behind them and reaches out to help other people. I think a hero is someone who is selfless, who is brave. I also think that you are a hero. By going into the Twin Towers to help people, and not sitting back and having others do the work for you, you are a hero. Because of what you did, you are a hero to me and many others.

I cannot tell you how much I and others are grateful for what you did for us and the victims of the attack. I am sure your department, your wife Kathleen, your sons Peter 3rd, and your daughter Danielle miss you very much. Even with all you had to lose, you gave up your life to save others. Sir,

Recent news that Kyrgyzstan will likely close the "Ganci Airbase" at Manas has reminded me of your service and sacrifice. I had the opportunity to open the airfield in December 2001 and I recall working with the FDNY (via satellite phone) to get me a name of one of the senior heroes in which to recommend naming our airfield. Your name was selected and I was so proud (as an Air Force cop) to be able to recommend a fellow emergency responder. I appreciate your sacrifice. Moreover, your bravery has been a personal and professional inspiration to me all these years.

God bless you, your family, and the FDNY.

In time, perhaps, we will mark the memory of September the 11th in stone and metal - something we can show children as yet unborn to help them understand what happened on this minute and on this day. But for those of us who lived through these events, the only marker we'll ever need is the tick of a clock at the 46th minute of the eighth hour of the 11th day

To whoever reads this entry, let it be known that this brave and fearless leader conveyed to the Manhattan Fire Dispatch that "these towers are coming down at any minute" over his "multichannel" radio and asked what his orders are to tell his men.
He was told to "stand fast" at his position until the Emergency Operations Center relocates and gets back to him.
He then knew that he and over 300 of his men were within moments of immortallity and told the dispatcher something to that effect. Within seconds of then, the towers collapsed. In other words, he knew the outcome, and stood there with his men and accompanyed them all to the final outcome. Through and through, a TRUR leader, both in this world and beyond.
I am priviledged enough to have heard the ENTIRE exchange on the police/fire radio I had in my vehicle that day.
NEVER will I EVER forget the bravery of those public service and safety workers that day, NEVER!!!!

If half these young guys knew what you knew and what I forgot it would really amaze them. Please know that we are always here for you. Your dad is a true hero and I am sure he is very proud of everything you are doing. Pete, with your new home and following in his footsteps, Chris writing such a touching and priceless book and Danielle graduating and working so hard to help children.

I was looking at some old pictures of all us at birthday parties and not having a care in the world. Those were the days. Your father was a great man who always knew how to put a smile on anyones face.

Pete you are like a big brother to me and I love ya.

Just remember that friends are the family we choose for ourselves...I am glad our families chose to be friends. Love ya's - Tricia

I was 6 weeks pregnant when I visited the World Trade Center Site on Feb 16th 2002. For some unknown reason, I have been drawn to this place- this website- I searched for a listing of firefighters to find the Peter I was looking for- this will make sense later in my letter. I believe we all have angels that look out for us. When I was rocking my 7month old son Joshua last night, a very strong feeling came over me. I have been drawn to fire fighting things for his room- for decorating- ok this sounds stupid but please read on. I thought it was just a quirk but then I had an image of a fire fighter that came to me later that night of a quiet figure that had respect, a leader, courage, I felt that the image was of a man who had strength and was there to watch over my son. He brought a comfort to me that I cannot explain- I felt his name was Peter. When I searched the web to find a listing of firefighters from 9/11 The image of a firefighter with an angel behind him came up and then the first name was Peter. I could not belive it! The connection is amazing to me. I am so inspired. I am crazy- yeah maybe but. When I was there looking out over the large whole in the ground that day in NYC, inside me was life. My son is my angel, my hero my hope for life to go on. I feel a connection here- respectfully I write to you- no matter your faith- I feel a connection specifically with my son Joshua to this man, Peter. I mean no disrespect to his memory on the contrary I feel honor.

Peace and comfort for you all as you read this message.

To Kathleen, Peter and Chris,

May you find peace in knowing that your husband and father is in a special place in heaven set only for the bravest of the brave, for Peter Ganci especially, God's guardian angel on earth to the people of New York. It is said there is no greater love than to lay down one's life for another, the only love greater than this is his love for you right now.

God bless you.

To the Ganci Family: I met Pete when I was 12 years old and he worked with my dad(Eddie "OB") at Engine #92. Some 30 years later when I ran into Pete he remembered me and of course my dad(Who was then Retired). He was Chief of Department and still wanted to give my dad a call(which he did) to see how he was. What a great man! A true gentleman. We pray for him and you all every day and will never forget him. God Bless you all and be strong.

To the family of Pete Ganci: From our family to yours, we offer our thoughts and prayers as the one year anniversary approaches. We hope you find the comfort and strength in knowing that on that day, all of New York will be thinking of you. I did not know Pete but like everyone else whose heard stories about him, he was a great leader and person. As we are told in storybooks, heroes never die, their legend lives on as will the men of the FDNY who lost their lives to save so many. Thank you for being our hero. God Bless Them All.

To the family of Peter Ganci:

A releatively unknown neighbor, but "family" just the same, I too, did not know Chief Ganci personally either. My dad (NYCFD) knew him, as well as many of my friends and neighbors from our community. I was amazed at the unbelievable reception in Farmingdale for this man-who was a highly decorated hero, father, neighbor, and friend.

Almost a year has gone by now, and America still grieves the loss of that great man. We will never forget. His dedication to save, protect, and care for so many others, I pray that God will give you all, his loving family, the strength to face each day. May his courage, his life, and his love live on in those who knew him and who loved him, and by those who have been touched by his life.

May you rest in peace, Mr. Ganci, with God and His angels.

To the Family of Peter J. Ganci,

My thoughts and prayers are with your entire family as I think of you all everyday.

I did not know Chief Ganci personally but my dad worked with him and spoke highly of him as so many others do. My brother works with Peter in Ladder 111/Engine 214. I know my family is privileged to have known and have worked with such a heroic legion whose memory will live on in each Firefighter's lives.

May your family find peace to get through the difficult days ahead.

God Bless All of you and know that all of America feels your tragic loss.

My name is Elizabeth and I am 17 years old from Willoughby, Ohio. I received a prayer bracelet with Peter Ganci's name enscribed in silver writing on a red band. This red band represents Firemen and in this case Chief. I would like to send my greatest condolences to the Ganci family. I know words cannot express the feelings brought by this loss, but if it helps, I would like you to know that he is in my prayers, everyday someone questions me about why I wear this bracelet I then tell them the story of Peter Ganci and what an impact he made in our lives. He most definitly is not forgotten and he truly lives up to that definition of a 'hero!'
