Charles Falkenberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2001.
For Leslie A. Whittington, Charles Falkenberg and their two young daughters, the flight to Los Angeles was to have been only the start of their journey. They were headed to Australia, where Whittington, a Georgetown University economist, was to work as a visiting professor for several months at Australian National University.

The family, friends said, had been planning for this adventure for months. The pair had been married 17 years. Their daughters, Zoe and Dana, were 8 and 3.

Charles, I recently flew into BWI over DC on an American Airlines flight, and even now my body shakes as I think of you and your family's last moments on earth. I stood for many tearful moments at your benches at the Pentagon Memorial. The heartbreak of reading Dana's name at the first bench reminded me to always tell my two daughetrs how much I love them. My prayers are lifted up for the friends and family you left behind. Much love from Texas

Although I worked with Charlie for a short time at ECOlogic, he left a lasting impression upon me. He was a great mentor. You and your family are not forgotten.

Charlie was my best pal in high school, and for many years beyond. I think of him - and of Leslie, Zoe and Dana so often. Happily, I think of the good times more often than I think of them on an airplane.
Oh, my gosh! Our antics, our joys, our sorrows.
Occasionally I think I recognize their energy in the winds of my life.

The memories of this good man and his family are as bright today as they were on that fateful day in 2001. May God bless you, your wife and your beautiful daughters. I hope that those who love you are at least a little comforted by all the words that are written on these pages.

To the wonderful who is together in Heaven, i may not have known them, but i feel for them, i was like 9 years old when i found out what had happened. This is just to let us know that we should appreciate every single minute we share with our family, because we never know what minute wiil be the last.

I remember Charlie well, he was my student for Calculus at UMCP in 1989-90. We became friends and hung out many times in the early 90s before I moved to Philly. I still have a long video I made of his family just after the first daughter was born. In it we were talking about how cool it would be for her to watch when she grows up. I was shocked and dismayed to hear they were on that plane, I found out that day, but six years later I can still hardly believe it. He was a very easy going guy, and she was very vivacious, I just can't imagine how they reacted when they realized what was happening, it must have been terrible, particularly for the kids. It's just a shame, what more can be said...

To the Family of Charles,
I recently visited the 9/11 memorial in West Orange, NJ which overlooks the NYC skyline. As I walked by the wall on a Friday night, I saw Charles's name followed by a 45; this was followed by Dana (3) and Zoe's (8) names. It didn't take me long to piece together the fact that Charles and his daughters, as well as his wife, were taken from this earth on 9/11 and, though I never saw their names until last week, I haven't been able to forget them, having already returned to this memorial twice since that Friday night even though I personally did not lose anyone on that day. Unlike Charles, I myself haven't had the privilege to raise a child yet in my 29 years; if that day should come, I'll treat each day as if it were my last, keeping the memory of Charles, Dana and Zoe with me all the while. I plan on mountainbiking up to Eagle Rock Reservation (the site of the memorial) at least once a week to say a few silent words to Charles, hoping that he'll hear me.

On Wednesday, Setember 11, 2002, 3,035 San Diegans gathered at Qualcomm Stadium to pay tribute to the fallen heroes and victims of the attacks against our country on 9/11, the previous year. I had the great honor to read the name of Leslie A. Whittington and to then read the "Freedom Bell" once in her memory.

Our small town has a church that is sponsoring a memorial to all the 9-11-01 victims. It is beautiful, with a field of white crosses, each cross bearing a victim's name. Altho my family had no personal connection to any of the victims, I have chosen a few victims for us to pray for and grieve over. I have printed a photo of this family and it hangs on their crosses in our memorial field. I chose them because my husband and I have 2 daughters. My heart goes out to their family and friends. They will live forever in our hearts...

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
