Carol Flyzik Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2001.
A Patient Stepmother
"She sold, like, computer software to hospitals and medical companies or something," said Kristin Walsh, unsure exactly what her stepmother did.

That is how their relationship had once been, cordial but constrained. Ms. Walsh's mother, Nancy, brought Carol Flyzik home 13 years ago and introduced her as her girlfriend to Kristin and her two brothers. Ms. Flyzik, 40, was a passenger aboard American Airlines Flight 11. She was on her way to the West Coast on a business trip.

"It's hard when your parents bring a new person home," Ms. Walsh said. "The fact that she was a woman made it a little harder, but I guess I felt the same way when my dad married another woman."

The family of five lived in Plaistow, N.H., and Ms. Flyzik proved to be a patient woman. She listened to the children. She made the holidays warmer. Through the years their relationship changed from "Stay out of my life" to "I love you."

Last year was the first time that Ms. Walsh bought Ms. Flyzik a Christmas present of her own: two tickets to a Celtics game. "We had so much fun," she recalled. "It was quality time that we never had together before."

She considered the empty chair, where her stepmom used to sit and watch television. "I guess you don't know what you have until it's gone."

Hi Carol
We used to work together at the Hale Hospital. I was an aide and you a blue girl. You never made anyone blue.
Remember Tracy Wood? I´m sure she say something if she found this page.
Remember sitting on Richard´s motorcycle in the parking lot of the 9´s in Haverhill? That was 1983.

God bless,

Carol, it's hard to believe that 20 years have gone by without you. We think of you often and smile and laugh. We shared so many wonderful memories at work, my wedding and other great times together. The week we spent at the beach with you and Nancy was the best! We miss your smile and your goofiness. We always laughed with you around. It still feels like yesterday when we lost you. Time doesn't heal this loss, it's just a patch until we can meet again. We love you so much and we treasure our thoughts of you. 20 years without you. Love,
Karen

Each year is never a little easier as some say. I remember you like yesterday. That impromptu pizza and beer night at my house in Bradford catching up. The fun at Star Island camp, band trips and endless marching practices. Junior choir and PF very Sunday with my folks. Your gentle, comfort at the ER at Hale so many times when family was rushed in. We miss you and honor your heroism, every day. Thank you! God bless you and Nancy and your Mom and Linda and all your kids. ❤

It's still unbelievable. I want to still run into you at the market and hear you laugh til we cry. You've been joined by your brother and Dad and I'm sure you are wailing on your sax in heaven. Went to see your name again last March, around your birthday. I tell my kids at school every year how we met in 2nd grade and grew up together with so many great memories at church and band and at the ER when you were saving my family members and keeping me calm. Then Sunday when I was in church, the final hymn was "Let There Be Peace on Earth", which was one of the first hymns that I remember your Mom and Mrs. Boose treaching us in Junior Choir. I fest like you were there singing along with me. I pray for peace and yours. Miss you dear friend. Rest well and know you and your family are all very loved.

You can't spend all the time we did as kids bike riding, playing sports at the St. Lawrence's field, trekking the woods behind your house, riding the bus to school all those years and especially the time we spent with Danny at Mary & Rays and just discount that time as only the past Carol. 15th Anniversary it is but you are a lot more than an anniversary to stay on a persons mind. Atleast I can say so in this way for now. Mike

Dear Mrs. Flyzik, Claudia and Linda, my thoughts are with you today and always. This year's passing of the date made me think of how much you all mean to me still. I know we don't see one another often, but we are together in spirit. This past spring I went to the Memorial and found Carol's name there. She was a hero before and now. I love you all and hope you are doing well. GOd bless you. Love, Holly

Dear Flyzik Family,
I too remember every year, and every time I see 8:22 on the clock. I am a friend of Carol's from BSC. Whenever I'd ask Carol the time, she'd look at her wrist and say 8:22! Back then her reply would always bring a smile, as it does today when I catch the clock at 8:22. Carol had a wonderful (and unique!) sense of humor with an infectious smile. I also remember her distinguished signature - the scribbled fly. I hope the passing of time has brought some peace to you ~ Jane

I remember every year! I did not know Carol, but was in a meeting with a couple of her co-workers when they got the news that Carol was on one of the planes. I met her through them, and knew what a wonderful person she was through the heart break of her co-workers. May God continue to Bless and comfort her family, friends and loved ones. We will never forget!

To The Flyziks,

My heart is heavy this week in remembering. The bright parts have been sharing wonderful stories about your wonderful daughter, sister, partner, parent, aunt. She lit up all of our lives with her smile, wit and goodness. We are all better for knowing Carol. My thoughts are with you often and will be always in March for her birthday (we shared a birthday month) and of course each September. God bless you all. My thanks to you especially Mrs. Fly! I wouldn't be in Music Education today had it not been for you and Mrs. Boose. Those wonderful days when Carol and I and all of our friends at the First Congo sat and sang together at Jr. Choir on Wednesday afternoons and Sunday mornings once a month. The music kept us all bound to one another right through college and beyond. I pray you are all well.

I grew up with Carol. Same grade, same classroom in 1st thru 6th grade. My brother and I played everything with Carol and Claudia. We were all the best of friends as children. We four spent alot of time together right there on Jacobs Road. It is so nice to know she found happiness in her life with her family, friends, and job. We moved away at my age 15 so I never saw her after that. My knowledge and memories of Carol are all but great from the time we spent together as kids. From what I have read about her on the internet it would have been wonderful to have been able to see her again. I have but only best thoughts for her family I can remember as being a close strong knit group. Thank you for letting me honor my old friend from my childhood.

September 13, 2011

To the Flyzik family and to all the knew her and loved her. I was Carol's college roommate her freshman year. I did not know right away that you were gone. Since I found out, I think of you often and especially on that day. Our memories were long ago, but your wonderful spirit fills my heart when ever I think of you. Remember how hard we laughed when we were going to play the roommate game just like the show on TV? You are truly missed.

To the family and friends of Carol,

I was randomly given a bracelet with Carol's name on it at my church soon after 9/11 and have been praying for her ever since. Today, I was watching the memorial service in NYC and saw her picture for the first time. It never occurred to me look on the internet for her until I saw her picture but I did today and found this site. I just wanted to tell her family I will pray for her always along with all of those lost on 9/11. God bless you Carol.

September 9, 2011

Dear Nancy,Linda,Claudia, Mark and Janet,

I want to know that I still keep Carol's memorial card with me. Her memory is alive and fills my spirit when I remember her contagious energy and laughter. I get chills when I think of all of the lives she touched through her career, including my father, in-laws and former husband at the old Hale Hospital.

I always remember 3rd grade choir practice and marching band, Star Island, Field Hockey games, Football games, class reunions, sporadic and timely meetings at Market Basket on the "Fly". I also remember how much she loved her life. Her family meant the world to her and when we spoke of you all in one of our last conversations one night over pizza and beer in Bradford, I was aware of how truly grateful she was to have you all. I am still in disbelief that we cannot physically see her, but I do know that on evenings when I walk on the beach or in my dark neighborhood in Maine, I look up and remember that she is part of that vast array of stars, shining even brighter in heaven than here on earth. Only God can make that possible. She is still with you and all of us who knew her. May God bless you all.

Best wishes,
Holly Margeson-Gray

To The Flyzik Family:

I've been thinking of Carol on this 10th anniversary of 9/11. I spent quite a few summers in Georgetown riding bikes up and down Old Jacobs Road. Carol was one of the neighborhood kids included in the bike rides.

I can't explain why it has taken so long for me to share my feelings and memories of Carol. She is, and always will be a very special person in my life, and memories. Where do you begin. Is it the time, as a child, she took me to the drive-in in the convertable, and I got to sit on the top of the seat over looking the windshield. Is it the sleepovers, trips to the beach, going with her when she was running aherns, or stopping by a friends house. Just to name a few. She was a very big part of my childhood. Knowing how speical she was to me as a child, I know my two boys would have loved her just as I did growing up. It would have been funny to see what their knick names would have been. As for me its was Booger. As I have become older I realize just how special Carol is and how much I will miss her. As I wrote this, my emotions ran wild, and I found it very difficult to bring myself to this point. Again a perfect example as to how much Carol has touched my life. Rest asure you will be in my heart and thoughts forever.

Love,

Seth

To Carols Family and friends,I worked with Carol at the Hale. In 1988 I was in the ER as a patient. I was scared and told Carol so. I had minor surgery and she held onto my hand and did not let go...I felt so much better with her there with me. She was a good, kind, caring and FUNNY person. Carol, altho the time was brief, you left an everlasting impression I will never forget. May God keep a tight hold on your hand too.

To Carol's family,

I grew up in Sidney, N.Y., and while Carol and I never met, we shared a starting place. I was especially sad to hear of her death on Sept. 11 because of her connection to Sidney. Then, hearing that she left behind a partner and children, as well, I felt such sadness for them and their special loss. My partner, Cathy, and I wish them peace as they continue their journey.

To Nancy & the Flyzik family.... Your loss is incomprehencible to most of us. I remember Carol fondly from days long ago in school. She was always our sunshine. May her family find peace in the dark days that come and may she rest in peace knowing how deeply she was loved and how much she will be missed.

Brett Bergeron

September 7, 2002

I just read through all of the things that people wrote in to express how they feel the loss of carol even though they did not know her, but i am here to say that they all did. She was part of all of us. I know that because she was a what i would consider a friend, although she wasn't at first, Carol was the very strong yet very silent type... she liked to test the water to see where people stood on different issues and would only intervein when necasssary, she let people have there own space but always let people know that she was around and that she cared. She was always quick with a joke or just a playfull sheepish smile but was never squirmish about puppies or mud or wrestleling with the boys. She lived life and enjoyed everything about it anywhere from her water gun and hat collection to watching sports while cooking something to eat. I know all this cause am her step son Kevins best freind going on almost 10 years. I at first didn't know what to make of carol and now we all wonder what we will make of our lives without her... Carol was the kid in all of us (un-repressed) while still being adult enough to take care of buisness when the time came. Please, everybody, learn by example and live every day to it's outmost fullest potential and carol will live on through you, her now extended family, as she does through all of us who knew her in life and miss her every day.

She will be greatly and dearly missed!!!

We all love you carol

I knew Carol at MEDITECH and cannot think of a single time I saw her that she did not have a gentle smile or a friendly "Hello" for you.

I want to share a poem that was sent to me by a friend in Dallas, Texas just after the 11th. I cannot help but share the comfort these words have given me over the last year.

"I WILL"

I will walk with you in this troubled time,

I will be the one holding your hand when you look to your side,

I will be the one that never fails you as a friend,

I will keep you strong when you think it is not worth it,

I will keep you safe when you feel afraid and alone,

I will love you to my fullest capacity and respect that love with all of my heart,

I will rejoice in our friendship and thank GOD everyday that he has brought you into my life,

For you are my friend and I shall share your burden the way GOD shares ours.

To the family of Carol.....I was so shocked to find out she was one of the people we lost on Sept 11th. My memories right away flooded back to our days in school...especially playing basketball, church and the band. Carol was actually "Fred" to our group of friends and was always laughing and making us laugh. The world has definitely lost a great person and I only wish that I had made more of a point to stay in touch with friends like her. I will miss you lots but have great memories and pictures to always remember you by. Love to all the family...

We are very sorry for your loss of Carol. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Carol gave me a chance with MEDITECH. I was her first new hire after she became a supervisor. She trained me and became my mentor in marketing. She is missed here, but I hope we are carrying on the way she would have liked. I know her family at home misses her. Her memory is strong and good, as long as you can remember something, it never goes away.

I too wear a wristband to remember Carol and those torn from us. My 36 year old sister-in-law died of caner on New Years eve recently, leaving 3 kids& a husband. These things are sooo hard but tradgedy can give birth to new life. Know you are in our prayers through this difficult time of searching for answers. May God bring you peace and healing. Jane

To the dear family of Carol,

Please accept my heartfelt sympathy. I never met Carol, but I wear her name on my wrist daily as a reminder of the importance of her life. I pray for you- her family- that you will be comforted by God and abide in His love. You are in my prayers often.

Peace to you, Jacqueline Ortiz
