Karleton Fyfe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2001.
'Really Living It'
Karleton Fyfe's mother had to be bedridden for the six months before he was born; he seemed to be in a hurry to get into the world.

There was so much to be excited about. Take the birth of his own son. He and his wife made it a group project. They sent family and close friends a video titled "It's a. . . ." showing them going for the sonogram, and at the end opening an envelope in which the doctor had written "boy." When Jackson turned 1, they asked the same group to write something and seal it for him to open when he turned 18.

Then, because Mr. Fyfe heard that the terrible 2's were caused by frustration at not being able to communicate, he taught his son sign language. "He was really living it," said Tristin Laughter a longtime friend of the couple.

Mr. Fyfe, 31, really lived everything, applying the same boyishness and determination whether he was mastering Steve Martin routines or the curveball as a kid, or tackling projects as a senior analyst at John Hancock — the job for which he was traveling on American Airlines Flight 11.
Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on December 31, 2001.

Karleton Fyfe's mother called his Brookline, Mass., home on Tuesday morning. She had seen the news of burning buildings and wanted to make sure her only son was not inside his 56th floor office in Boston.

He wasn't, Fyfe's wife, Haven, assured her mother-in-law. He was on an airplane.

Fyfe, a 31-year-old John Hancock employee and father of 1-year-old Jackson, was aboard American Airlines 11. The trip was for business.

Kansas City Star columnist Bill Tammeus had written almost all of his column--about the bombing--before he learned that Fyfe, his nephew, was a victim. "He's the kind of kid that if there was anything that could have been done on that plane to help, he would have done it," said Tammeus, who grew up in Woodstock.

Karleton sat next to me at Fidelity Investments, Inc. for six months although we were not in the same work group. I remember him as a fine young man that was proud of his family. When we saw the manifest at work for flight 11 I recognized his name right away. We had no idea that he had left Fidelity. I do hope that his family has weathered his passing and that his son has grown up to be as fine a man as his dad surely was.

Every year on this date, I think about the beautiful, bright 4 year old Karleton Fyfe. I was his teacher in his four year old class at Raleigh Preschool. I loved that precious little (not so little, really) boy who even then shone so brightly among his peers. It was heartbreaking, those years ago right after 9/11, to learn that he was a victim on that horrendous day and still today, it breaks my heart to think about it. But my memories of him are so dear to me.

Karleton worked in my dept. at John Hancock. I was an admin. assistant, and though Karleton wasn't on my team, his office wasn't far from my desk. I recall the day before he left for LA to attend a conference, he was packing his brief case near the end of the day, and I wished him well at the conference. He thanked me, and seemed pre-occupied, which I didn't find unusual, considering his position. He was quiet and soft-spoken, but had that twinkle in his eye, that told me he had an acute sense of humor. His admin. assistant, Lisa, sat near my cubicle and she enjoyed working with him. Regrettably, I didn't get to know him very well, as we were all busy with our own team members. His Memorial Service at Park St. Church a few day after the attack, was a beautiful tribute , but many of us still stunned over the 9/11 attacks and the loss of one of our own. Requiest in Pace, Karleton.

Karleton was a classmate and good friend of mine during our days in business school together at Boston University. I remember him fondly as we often spoke about the stressful post-MBA career recruiting process. We shared our hopes and dreams over coffee, and compared notes after interviewing for the same jobs at several companies. We stayed in touch over the ensuing years, sharing our career progress, until that fateful day on 9/11/2001. Learning that Karleton was on one of the hijacked planes was extraordinarily traumatic. I will never forget my friend Karleton, and all of those other innocent victims of the horrific events of 9/11.

Shortly after 911 my church in Cleveland Ohio had a fundraiser for the victims families. The church sold bracelets with one victims name on it. I purchased a bracelet and was randomly given one with the name Karleton D. B. Fyfe on it. I have worn it every holiday and anniversary of 911 since then. I were it with honor and pray for Karleton Fyfe and his family and all that knew and loved him. I didn't think it mattered to find out who he was because in my heart he was beyond special. I have been honored to hold his name close to my heart now and always but for some reason I felt the need to know him on this 12th anniversary. He sounds like everything I thought he would be. I'm 54, a mother of two sons 28 and 25 and married 31 years to a wonderful man. I will continue to wear my bracelet with Karleton D. B. Fyfe on it in memory of a son a husband a dad a friend and a hero.

I just found out recently that Karleton was on Flight 11 and I couldn't believe what I was reading. I was good friends with Karleton's sister Tiffany back in college at the University of North Carolina and got to know Karleton through her. I can't imagine what they must have gone through.

I recently attended a 10 year anniversary memorial here in Orlando, FL for the victims of 9/11. As part of the memorial we were all asked to take a flag with a name of a victim. I obviously did not know Karleton, but by picking his flag that day I have had the honor of getting to know him a little bit through all the entries on this page. He has made 9/11 more personal and real for me, and has given me a greater sense of pride as an American. I would like his family to know that we continue to honor Karleton and I think of them everytime I see his flag in my living room now. God Bless Karleton and his family.

I worked with Karleton while at Fidelity. I was shocked and saddened when I learned of his passing 10 years ago. I left Fidelity before he did and I told him he had a great future with the firm, or anywhere he worked for that matter. He had a rare combination of energy, analytic ability and interpersonal skills, which made him a person everyone wanted to work with.

My fondest memory of Karleton is that I always told him he reminded me of Derek Lowe, a pitcher with the local Red Sox. Facial features were very similar ... they were even the same height! After 9/11, I started refering to Derek Lowe as "Karleton" when I saw him pitching on TV. Then a couple of years later, in 2004, the Red Sox started Derek Lowe in the historic game #7 versus the Yankees. My wife was so nervous, but I told her that the Red Sox would definately win the game because "Karleton" was pitching. Sure enough, "Karleton" pitched superbly and the Sox won the game. "Karleton" then proceeded to win the clinching World Series game as well. To this day I think of (the real) Karleton whenever the topic of the '04 Red Sox comes up. In a very unique way, he gave me faith in the team, and the Red Sox gave me a way to keep Karleton's memory alive with me in the year's to come.

Karleton was the gifted student that every teacher could only hope to be in their classroom. He was the dedicated athlete that every coach was thankful to have on a team. He made the classroom a joy to step into every day. He made the baseball team a cohesive group of guys who I loved to see play and have fun winning. I was blessed to be his science teacher and his coach and above all a friend. He and his loving family helped me enjoy many days at Neal Jr. High and I will always remember Karleton. I lost a piece of my heart the moment I found out on 9/11. May God bring peace to your parents, sisters, family and all the people you touched in your life. Coach Bird

You were my friend's college buddy when I met you. You became my friend, a short while after. I quickly realized how incredibly fast your sense of humor and powers of observation were, so it was easy to enjoy your company. The last time I saw you was in Brookline. You put us up at your apartment and showed us a great night on the town. You took us back to the rooftop and showed us your awesome view of the city! I never thought we would never hang out and have fun again but I will always remember the good times we had playing hoops, getting pizza or just relaxing in Carrboro or Chapel Hill. I will certainly never forget how good it was to get to know you for such a short time.

I often think of Karleton throughout the year, not just on this somber anniversary, and always with a smile in my heart. I knew him for a summer, working at a restaurant with his sister. We were college kids with stars in our eyes. The 1989 summer ended, I left for NYU along with the Cocteau Twins cassette Karleton loaned me. I can still see his wry smile clearly and hear our laughter; we all laughed, a lot. I hope his family reads these entries to know how Karleton touched even the passersby in his life. I remember saying to my wife, I don't believe there will be anyone in this country that won't have some direct connection to at least one victim of this terrible tragedy. At the time, I had no idea Karleton would be that connection for me. I last saw Karleton three years prior at our 10 year high school reunion (1998). I remember saying to myself how impressive his presence was. I always knew he was highly intelligent and a great athlete. I can't remember if Karleton was voted Most Likely to Succeed. But, when I saw him at the reunion, he had such an awesome presence that I would say he definately deserves that recognition. I am disappointed to say I didn't know Karleton better. However, knowing his close friends and meeting his parents on several occasions, I know he was someone special in their lives. Which brings me to say, to be absent from the body is to be present with The Lord. Karleton will always be missed. But, we can take comfort that he is truly home now where no hurt, harm or danger will ever come to him. Missing you more than I ever knew.
