I awoke early this morning -- one day after the 23rd anniversary of 9/11 -- with thoughts of my close friend in graduate school at Temple University, Norma Lang Steuerle. I was enrolled in a doctoral teaching associate program in quantitative psychology, and she was earning her Master’s as a research fellow in educational psychology. She shared an apartment with a woman she had known in college, but when the roommate brought in a dog who pooped all over their apartment, including the bathtub, Norma came to live with me. I had a one-room rental in the home of a widow who attended my church. Norma and I shared a full-size bed. We were like sisters, chatting before falling asleep each night. When our time came to leave the university, she left a note on my desk. I will always remember the last line: “Be true to your intellect.”
On 9/11 Norma was a passenger on American Flight 77 with plans to join her husband and two daughters for a vacation in Thailand, where her husband Gene had an opportunity to be a guest lecturer. Needless to say, she lost her life that day when the plane careened into the Pentagon.
Norma was kind, smart, and so much fun to be with. She was short in stature but bigger than life itself. She became a clinical psychologist who worked with troubled children. She was a devout Roman Catholic who participated in the many outreach programs of her church in Virginia. I always will remember her, especially on this sad anniversary of her passing.

Norma was my Supervisor many decades ago at Mt. Vernon Community Mental Health Center in Alexandria, Va. Beyond her excellent supervision it was her kindness, intuitiveness and support that has stayed with me. Pat McCallum LCSW,ret

9-11-23: I attended college with Norma Jean´s sister, Christine. After we graduated in 1973, Chris and I rented a 2nd floor of a house in Cleveland Hts., Ohio. Chris´ family would come to visit her from out-of-town - her wonderful Mom and Dad, her 2 loving sisters, one of which was kind and thoughtful Norma Jean, Norma Jean´s loving husband, Gene and their two daughters. Norma Jean´s family was so loving. Chris´ other sister, Janice, would come to visit Chris, too. They were such a kind, caring, fun-loving and supportive family! On this anniversary of 9/11, I just wanted to tell Norma Jean´s family that I´m thinking of them and Norma Jean. She made a very positive impact on the lives of her family and others, such as myself, who had the good fortune to have met her. Norma Jean is now in Heaven with the Lord, her loving parents and her sister, Janice. May God bless Christine, Gene and the two daughters of Gene and Norma Jean. Remembering Norma Steuerle 22 years after 9/11. She had an ability to help someone look at their world differently; through a fresh perspective, while always being honest about the challenges one faces in life. She blended tough love with a deep respect for her clients. I always felt like she was in my corner; that was not something I was used to. The final time I met her before 9/11, I asked Norma what was one piece of advice she would give to her clients. She paused and said, live in the moment. Live in the moment. I’m still working on that. Thank you again Norma. You are always remembered. Always. Don

I recently discovered that Ms. Steuerle graduated from Temple University which is where I went to college. I believe she is the only Temple grad who was killed on 9/11. I'm not even sure if the school knows they have a graduate who was killed on 9/11. I just wanted to recognize a fellow Temple alum and give my condolences to her family and friends.

Today I will be visiting the Pentagon Memorial for the first time in memory of Norma and as an expression of love and gratitude for all that she taught me. Her words and kindness still resonate in my heart. I continue to be blessed that our paths crossed. I am confident that we will meet again. All is well with her soul. Blessings to family and friends.

It's been nearly 12 years since I last saw Mrs. Steuerle. She rarely missed our field hockey games when her daughter and I were in high school. Even after all that time, when I saw her name on the list of victims, my heart just broke. A year later, I still can't find the right words for the Steuerle family. But I hope they know they remain in my thoughts and prayers.

This Earth lost such a wonderful person in Norma. She was so much more than just a "doctor or counselor." She was a woman full of compassion for others and a zest for life. As a matter of fact, that is all I hear now when I think of her...her very beautiful, musical laugh.
God Bless her family and all who knew her or had the priviledge to be one of her patients.

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Norma. May her life and love live on in you. May warm memories of time together lighten the sorrow in your hearts. Our hearts cry with you.
America Cries
We see your sorrow-
and our hearts cry....
We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-
-the American people-
are beside you.
We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
