Doug, my prayers are with your friends and family today as I pause to remember you and the many others who lost their lives so senselessly on that sad day. I pray for strength for your family, and some comfort for them in knowing that there are many Americans who will always remember them.

For an music lover who will never be forgotten

Melissa Blue

September 23, 2014

Always a shame when someone who loves all types of music and who is so eclectic dies too soon because usually they share that appreciation with others and keep the music going to future generations. Know he's enjoying types of music in Heaven he probably never knew existed and has been for the past 13 years. May you never be forgotten. I'm sure you're missed here by those who need the new innovations in technology and the explanations and more investigations into what's going on now.

Dear Barbara:

I've been troubled by the fact that I didn't attend Doug's wake. You probably don't remember me but I'm Jo, Walt's sister. In June of 2001 my son, husband and I traveled to LA on the same flight that Doug was on. Sean was checking out colleges. I think often how it could have been us instead of Doug. Please accept my very belated sympathy for Doug's loss and know that his beloved spirit will always be with you.

To the Wife and Children of Doug Gowell,
I, too, am a member of the Gowell

Doug's uncle, Harold, his Dad's
brother.
I wanted to tell you that your Husband, and Father, was
honored this past Sept. 11, 2008,
in a Memorial Concert in Southbridge, MA, when our
chorus, the Quinebaug Valley Singers
performed. We presented a
collection of patriotic songs, and
prayers and poems were also
recited.
I dedicated the evening, as did
my friends, to Doug.
We keep you all in our thoughts
and hearts.

I was an employee at Avid from 1996 to 2006. In January of 2001 I was working the Avid booth at Internet World (or whatever they called it back then) in Los Angeles, CA. Doug Gowell and I stood 10 feet apart from each other for 3 days but I don’t recall that we ever spoke to one another or had a proper introduction. I was based in Seattle and Doug in Tewks so we didn’t know each other and had separate responsibilities in the company and on the booth.

As I see his picture on this website after all these years I can vaguely remember seeing him with his customers in the booth, talking shop and doing his thing.
That’s all I remember……

Often now, As I travel through life I find myself in situations where I’m surrounded by strangers and/or co-workers from other parts of the country or the world of whom I have never met. And when I think I’d rather hang with my familiar friends than take the time to meet new ones…. I think of Doug, and I remind myself that we are only here for a short time and that no time should be taken for granted.

Doug’s death 7 years later still impacts me today, I think of him every time I fly which is weekly. I have met and befriended more people because of Doug’s legacy. I take more time to introduce myself to co-workers and strangers where I may not have before. My children have picked up on this too….. so Doug’s impact continues onto the next generation.

Be outgoing, be friendlier to those “invisible” people you see everyday. You never know what tomorrow brings.

God Bless you Gowell Family – You will never be forgotten, I assure you.

I did not know Doug. However I worked at Avid from 1991 to 1998 and took that same flight to LA many times. Was there during the riots in 1992. I suppose it could have been me, were I to have stayed on. Although, I do not want to pretend to exclaim that I have any portion of a measure of what his family has gone through. The loss is beyond what I can convey in words. If by chance, in some sort of way, that his family can take a grain of solace in knowing he passed in our greatest tragedy on American soil for our generation, then so be it. I have no way of comparison to their grief, and I consider him a hero.

We are coming upon the 5th anniversary of this national tragedy and we are as sad today as we were when it happened.

In my mind's eye, I still see Doug passing by early that morning in the limo headed to airport - I remember seeing him the night before as he was checking the work he was doing in the front of your home.

To the family of Doug,

I am deeply sorry for this loss. He was a great man. He was one of the finest people I had met during my tenure at Adobe Systems. Doug constantly spoke of his family. He especially liked to talk about his children. He was the most respectable human being I had met in a very long time. I remember when he stated that he wanted to take the family to the Red Sox game. I gave him my corporate tickets and told him to have a great time. He always stated how he loved to play with gadgets and bought one of the first PDA's. He showed it to me proudly. Doug also helped me in trying to find a job when I became unemployed. God took a great man. I am sure that he is watching over all of you and protecting you from where he is.

My prayers are with you.

Hi I need your help you see I'm trying to make sure every family that lost a love one receive a homemade quilt. When I seen what happen I knew I had to do something so as I was crying and praying the Lord answered my prayers by telling me to make quilts for everyone. Not a very easy task especially when I really don't know where to start. I started making quilts and soon ask my friends and everyone in our wonderful country to help. Soon I had 1554 quilts ready to go. We took them to New York and hand deliver them to Pier 94 where the families wereon Dec 16,17, and 18. I know my job isn't done and I have to continue so I came across a list of all the victim and decided to see if maybe there friends or families could help me try and bring some comforter to the parents or spouse. If you need to check me out please do ask our Senator Harkin from Iowa phone number is 515-284-4574 and ask Dianne Liepa what my mission is with the Freedom Quilts. By the way my name is Betty Nielsen. I was on America 01 and Good Morning America. You can also call Good Morning America and ask for Catherine Upin one of ABC Productor to check the facts out. I'm trying to make sure and not miss anyone so please if you can help me by contact his beloved wife and telling her what I plan on doing she can email me or you can and let me know if it's okay. Right now I have made and collected 1174 and still working at making more. I need your help in order to completed my project. I hoping get all the families that lost a love one from the Sept 11 attacked and present them with a quilt. A quilt of love and comforter. I'm also thinking that maybe your senator from your state can line something up and I could bring quilts to hand over to the families. Please if you have any idea and would want to help me bring some comforter please talk to the families even the senator of your state and perhaps we can so something special. We here in Iowa want to show that it doesn't matter how far you are we are thinking of them and praying and we also want to give them a sign of comforter and love. What better way of showing that this country is great and that we care for one another. Thank you for listening.

Barbara, Jessica, and Mike,

In deepest sympathy, the one's that we've lost still go on with us in spirit, in the faces of family their presence still lingers, in the dreams they once nurtured, they still shape our future, in the hearts that embrace them they live on forever, his memory lives, his love endures, God Bless you all.

We are very sorry for your loss of Douglas. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I met Doug in 1999 while at Cisco Systems. He and I worked on a strategic alliance between Cisco and Avid. I visited him at Avid headquarters in Massachusetts, and got to know him well enough to consider him a friend. I'm about the same age, and was able to relate to him personally. Something made me read the list of WTC casualties and I was shocked to see Doug's name. Please accept my deepest sympathy. He was a great guy.
