Captain Daniel Brethel

Daniel Brethel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 16, 2001.
A Day at Disney World
Daniel Brethel, captain of Ladder 24 on West 31st Street in Manhattan, had had some close calls: His neck and ears had been burned when he was holding his helmet over an injured firefighter who was lying on the street; once he had required a skin graft. Arriving at the World Trade Center after both jets had hit, he shouted a warning to his men: "Guys, be very careful, because firemen are going to die today."

He had been off duty at 9 a.m. His wife, Carol, hearing about the attack at their home in Farmingville, hoped he was already on the train and knew nothing about it. On Tuesday night, they came to the house and told her they had found his body. Captain Brethel, 43, had grabbed one of his men as a building started to collapse. They dived under a firetruck. Both were crushed.

On Wednesday, Ms. Brethel went to her husband's firehouse to empty Captain Brethel's locker. Theirs is a large, close family. In April, all the brothers and sisters and their children, 19 Brethels, went to Disney World, waiting until it was close to closing time so they could ride Thunder Mountain together.

This week, at least a dozen Brethels, including Captain Brethel's children, who are 12 and 14, accompanied his wife to the firehouse. While Ms. Brethel closed the locker room door behind her, the firefighters told stories about their captain and the children had a chance to see the people stopping by and the flowers they had left. And that was good, said Mr. Brethel's sister, Loretta.

In honor of 9/11 heroes, I donated blood on the 15 anniversary of Patriot's Day and the person I was picked to honor was Daniel. I read a newsday profile about him, and he was a wonderful man that is certainly missed!

I live in Denver, Colo. and joined in the memorial tribute at our Red Rocks stair climb. climbing up and down the stairs 9 rounds would equal the World Trade Center stairway. Thousands of people were there to honor Daniel and others who died as heros
and heroines. My thoughts and prayers to all of the Brethel family.

I went to New York City recently and I visited the 9/11 memorials. I took a single picture and the only full visible name was Daniel J. Brethel. All I could think about was how I knew nothing about this man whose name was in my picture. I couldn't be happier to see how much of a hero he was, not just on 9/11, but every time he had ran into a burning building. Some people say that one day we will all be together, and I hope that is true. I would be proud to spend my eternal peace with this man. Thank you for your service and may you forever and always rest in peace!

To the Family of Capt. Daniel Brethel,
This past Saturday I participated in the Panama City, FL. 9/11 Stair Climb; I was fortunate to have chosen Capt. Brethel as my honoree. I chose him because my first name is Daniel and I wanted to feel the connection between us. I also am a U.S. History teacher at Bay High School in Panama City and will be able to use this climb as a part of my class. I want you to know that your family is in our hearts and prayers. Thank you for your service and protection.

on June 9, 2000 while working as a lineman for amtrak, I was electrouted while working in lINE #1 OF THE TUNNELS GOING OUT TO NEW ENGLAND. CAPT. DAN WAS THE FIRST RESPONDERS TO GET TO ME ALONG WITH THE REST OF ENG.1 & LADDER24. HIS WORDS AND COMPASSION ASSURED ME THAT I WOULD BE ALRIGHT. HIS CREW CARRIED ME OUT A GOOD MILE UP TO EMS ALL THE TIME TELLING ME I WOULD BE OKAY. BEING A EMT MYSELF I KNEW THE EXTENT OF MY INJURIES AND GETTING HIT WITH 12000 VOLTS OF ELECTRICITY, THE CHANCES OF MY SURVIVAL WERE SLIM TO NONE, BUT THE WHOLE TIME HE TALKED TO ME AND GAVE ME THE STRENGTH TO FIGHT FOR MY LIFE.. AMTRAK PUT MY WIFE UP @ THE HOTEL ONWEST 31ST RIGHT NEAR THE FIREHOUSE WHILE I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL.MY WIFE WAS ABLE TO STOP BY AND THANK THEM, BY CHANCE DAN WAS WORKING. MY WIFE THANKED HIM AND THE REST OF THE HOUSE FOR SAVING MY LIFE BUT ESPECIALLY HIM FOR THE WORDS OF COMFORT AND CARE HE GAVE TO ME. AFTER I WAS RELEASED FROM THE BURN UNIT AND DURING MY OUT PATIENT VISITS,MY WIFE AND I WOULD STOP BY AND HAVE COFFEE WITH THE GUYS AND WE WERE ALWAYS GREETED WARMLY.THEIR WORDS OF WISDOM AND COMPASSION TO BOTH OF US GAVE ME THE STRENGHT TO CARRY ON. TO THE BRETHEL FAMILY MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE DEPTH OF YOUR PAIN,BUT YOU ARE ALWAYS IN OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS.DAN HAD A TREMENDOUS IMPACT ON MY LIFE AND I WANTED TO SHARE MY STORY WITH YOU.

Dear family and friends of Capt Brethel,
I received a ribbon with Capt Brethel's's name on it at the first memorial service I participated in after the tragedy. I have kept it ever since. It has been especially touching to me as I have two daughters that are the same ages as his children. Every time I see the ribbon in my jewelry box, I say a prayer of peace. I sincerely hope you have found peace. My thoughts have especially been with you at this 10th anniversary.

To the family of Capt. Daniel Brethel,
Today I wear a bracelet that bears the name of your Daniel. I am a deputy fire chief in Quincy, Ma. We purchased these bracelets after the attacks of 9/11/2001. I chose Capt. Brethel because at that point in my career I had spent most of my time as a ladderman. Therefore, I felt it was appropriate to honor another one. I just want to reach out to you today and let you know that he has not been forgotten..

Dear Brethel Family,

On Sept 11, 2005 I took my son Daniel to see the flags, each flag represents a victim of 9/11. The city i live in ( vaacville CA ) they put the flags up every Sept 11. I told my son who is only 4 to pick a flag to buy, and he picked Capt. Daniel. My son was born the same month of 9/11 just a few days later. Capt Daniel Brethel is a true hero, and i will have my flag out every 9/11 in memory of him. God Bless.

On a day in September, I and so many others around the country and around the world looked upon the people of New York as though they were our own. Our brothers, and our sisters. Our fathers and mothers, our sons and daughters. However, many of us felt the strongest bond and the greatest kinship with the families of the firemen and policemen who had fallen, for it was they - those brave and noble souls - who had so unselfishly given all they could give to protect those entrusted to their care. Our little band of brothers. We grieved for you then; we grieve for you still. Bless you, Captain Brethel, and all the victims and their families.

Dear Brethel Family

I am writting from Benicia, Ca. On September 11th 2004 the city of Vacaville, Ca. held a ceremony for the fallen heros of 9-11, placing 1 flag for every life lost on that tragic day. Having the opportunity to buy a flag in the name of someone who lost their life, I did. Myself being an EMT and my Boyfriend a Firefighter I told them I wanted one of a Firefighter. With that I recieved a flag with the name Capt. Daniel Brethel from Farmingdale N.Y. After reading about him when I got home, I found out he lost his life trying to save another. He is truely a hero. I will fly that flag proudly in my yard in honor of Daniel Brethel.

Sincerly, Kim Morgan

Danny,

Words will never suffice for the pain we have suffered since that heroic day that you gave your life for others. Tearfully, it's hard to imagine that a year has gone by.

I can still remember each day of our friendship as we joined the East Meadow Fire Department. A place you dedicated 10 years of service protecting our community, eventually making it to Captain of Engine Co # 1.

Those days were filled with fun, laughter, and excitement every night, as we matured to become officers. I can still remember the calm and relaxed atmosphere we had as we entered a burning structure, and the side laughs we had under pressure as you bled the nozzle of air.

Speaking of that laugh. It was like no other. How all of us kidded you about it as we enjoyed Saturday Night Live in the 70's and 80's. It remains with us each day.

I was so proud of your accomplishment as you rose to Captain of Ladder 24 in the FDNY.

I must say, we were never surprised. I had always felt that you were a "Natural", one of the best, as I witnessed first hand working at your side in the EMFD long before your career began.

As with many friendships, work and family obligations eventually separated our close bond in person, but our occasional "get together" was a true pleasure.

Funny how life is. True friendships never change.. They are just kept fondly from afar.

Knowing you succeeded so well in life with, your livelihood, your lovely wife Carol, and your two beautiful girls, was always a comfort in the absence of the closeness we once shared as firefighters.

Now, a year after your passing, your name will forever live in our minds, as well as in history, for the hero you became on September 11, 2001, in the face of incredible odds, in the true tradition of the New York's bravest.

I treasure the friendship we had, and hope that you are watching over your family and friends, and in some way, enjoying the tribute the world has given you, and 342 other FDNY and 37 NYPD hero's, who unselfishly gave up their lives while carrying out the largest rescue in our Nation's history. God bless you and your family in these unforgiving times.

To The Brethel Family...

At school the students and the administration made wooden crosses and painted it white. Each person got to pick a name and write it along the cross and I chose Daniel Brethel. His name stood out to me. I don't know anyone who is a victim of September 11th, I could not relate as much as everyone else and it hurt inside of me. Watching the September 11th tributes on television made me want to look up his profile and for some reason I felt that I knew Daniel. I just wanted to let you know that you guys and the victims and their families are in my prayers.

It is such an honor to wear Daniel's name on the 9/11 bracelet, one who's brave soul will live forever.

My life was changed forever on September 11th 2001, however, the men and women like Capt. Brethel placed footprints in my heart that will never be forgotten.

I send my sympathy to the family and friends of Capt. Brethel and those of Ladder 24. I may not have ever met Capt. Brethel, but his courage and brave soul will live inside my heart forever.

My heart goes out to all of you for your loss.

Following Sept. 11, a group of friends here in Roseburg created a nonprofit group called "We Will Remember". Our goal--to provide a means to help people remember to pray for the nation, to remember the victims and to pray for the families. (A portion of the proceeds is being donated to the Todd Beamer foundation)

After identifying the goal, we purchased bracelets, had them engraved with 911.01, and began selling them, primarily by word of mouth. A victim name is provided with each bracelet--we feel engraving the name is personal and should be done by the bracelet owner.

My mother wears her bracelet daily with the name Captian Daniel Brethel engraved on it. She thinks of all of you daily and prays you will find comfort and peace.

Captian Brethel, like many others that were lost, is a hero. May you heal swiftly, may God bless all of you, and may you find peace--and know that someone in Oregon is thinking of Captain Brethel (as well as all of you).

Our hearts cry deeply for America's loss of a hero. As I read your story about Daniel I said a prayer and cried. We thank Daniel for his deep devotion at saving, protecting and caring for others as a firefighter. Such a devotion comes with a brave, warm and caring heart. May Daniel's courage, life and love live on in all who love him and in those who have been touched by his life. May the sorrow in your hearts be lightened by warm memories of times shared with Daniel. Our hearts are with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
