Robert Curatolo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 16, 2001.
Image Captured in a Photo
Three brothers – two firefighters and a police officer – went to ground zero on Wednesday, Sept. 12, to search for the fourth: Robert Curatolo, 31, a firefighter and the baby of the family, married only three weeks. They had a pretty good idea where he was, because rescuers had already found the helmet of the lieutenant he had been with. Rescuers had also, it turned out, found Mr. Curatolo's body, under a firetruck. The brothers were told it would be better if someone else made the ID.

Quiet Robert, funny Robert, Robert who ironed his clothes and worked two jobs. "He was the cautious one, I was the wild one; I still can't believe this happened," said Billy Curatolo, a firefighter with Engine 243 in Brooklyn.

Robert Curatolo, who lived in Staten Island, was off duty when the towers were hit, one of the guys whose shift ended at 9 a.m. He hitched a ride to the scene with a 19th Precinct car. After the first building collapsed he was seen dragging a man with two broken legs to safety, then – in an eerie photo snapped by another firefighter – heading back to the second building. That is the last image his brothers have of him.

"We always have birthday parties for the nieces and the nephews and he was always late and always – since he was a teenager – he would arrive saying, 'Hello, my fans!" said brother Anthony, the cop.

"He was always late to everything," said his brother Billy. "Except the World Trade Center. He gets there on time."

To the family of the beloved Robert Curatolo,
A week or so after the unthinkable day happened, I, a fireman's daughter, received a red metal bracelet. On this bracelet is a name, that of your beloved Robert. I want you to know I still wear it and people still ask who is on there? Did you know him? My response, he was a hero that gave his last breath doing what he did best on the unthinkable day. When asked why do I still wear it, because he will forever be that hero and deserves recognition everyday for his ultimate sacrifice. From Austin, TX my prayers are with you for as long as I live.

I was a good friend of Rob's in high school and I have had a hard time finding the words for the past ten years. Believe me not a week goes by that I dont think about Rob and his family and how brave he was and how he was such a great guy and friend. As well as how his family has suffered. His family has always been a group of people who are kind and generous. Especially during this weekend, you are in my thoughts and prayers. Take care and best wishes.

To the Curatolo family, I just wanted to let you know that back in Sept. 2001, Ebay sold id bracelets and I bought one since the money was going to the Sept 11th Fund. I had Robert Curatolo. I visited his Ladder Co. in Nov. 2001 and his fellow firefighters gave me a shirt and told great things about him. I was a Disney cast member at the time and left presents from Disney for his beloved wife, Christine. I want you to know, that every year, I honor him by wearing the bracelet, and I honor all of those who lost their lives that day. Every year I wish your family love. God Bless, Madison DiLoren, aka, Cruella DeVil back then.

To the family of Robert Curatolo - I just want to say thank you for raising a son with such a heart for others - one willing to give of his own life for others. I was given a metal bracelet to wear each year on 9/11. Each bracelet has a name of one of the heros that died that day. The name on my bracelet happens to be Robert Curatolo and I decided this year to do a little research and find out a little about this person whose name I have been wearing. Now I have a face and family information and it feels so much more personal. I pray for your family. I pray that over the years that your tears have been replaced with wonderful memories and that one day you will all see Robert again and that I will get to meet this man, this hero whose name is on my arm every 9/11. May God Bless each of you and May God Bless America.

Every year on this day I count my blessings. Today I want to give thanks to a young man that I had the privilege of meeting many years ago. It was the Spring of 1995 when I first met Rob while he was vacationing in Florida. He immediately struck me as a genuinely kind person who cared a lot about his family and friends. I was deeply saddened to learn of his passing, however I'm proud of him for what he accomplished. Even though I knew him for only a brief moment in time, I will never forget him nor what he and all the others did and continue to do for our country. God bless Rob and his family.

December 2, 2006

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

God bless you Rob, you were always "one of a few" no one could have, "or would have", done it better than you! You wouldn't have had it any other way.
