Eugen Lazar was a child with a million questions. How does our body work, his mother once recalled him asking their pediatrician back in Bucharest when he was 3. When we stop walking, what makes us stop? "All these questions," said Siu Chong, his girlfriend. "He was always wondering how everything works, always seeking for knowledge."

A programmer at eSpeed, part of Cantor Fitzgerald, Eugen, 27, had graduated from Cooper Union with a degree in engineering. Fascinated by music and how people hear it, he was building his own speakers. He was a cook and a baker. He and Siu liked to make crepes together; in Paris, they watched closely to see how they were made. They had even tackled chocolate fondue.

An only child, Eugen lived in the Glendale section of Queens in an apartment in the home of his parents, Alecsandru and Elena, who immigrated from Romania in 1985.

He met his girlfriend, a graphic designer, on a camping trip in the Catskills years ago. When he learned years later that she no longer had a boyfriend, he sent her an e-mail message and asked her out for pizza.

Last Sunday, they returned to the restaurant, Lombardi's in SoHo, and remembered their first date. "He was so perfect for me," Siu said.

Eugen, from what I have read about you here and on cantorfamilies, you sound like you were such an interesting, passionate, and dedicated young man with many interests and so much going for you. I bet your crepes tasted amazing. I am so sorry for what happened to you and also so sorry for the loss your family and friends had to endure, especially your parents who lost their only child and your girlfriend, Siu, who sounds like she was your perfect match and companion. Please know you’re never forgotten. Hope you’re enjoying your special day, happy heavenly birthday!

I met Eugen when we were about 8 yrs old and went through elementary, junior high and high school with him. He had just immigrated to the US and I remember he did not know much English. He taught himself English and was always the most motivated, friendliest person. He would tutor students when needed and was always so friendly and pleasant. Eugen was the smartest and most dedicated student I met throughout my school years. I was very sad when I realized he had perished at the World Trade Center. He will always be missed.

Today I had the honor of Ringing a Freedom Bell and wearing Eugen's name in his memory. In doing this I have never felt such a feeling of honor. I now carry and will always carry Eugen's name and memory with me, not only for him but for his family that loved him so much. Though Eugen's light was extengished so tragically, his memory will be a light that will shine bright and true. My thoughts and prayers are with Eugen's Parents and Family now and always. May we never forget.

I don't know who will read this, but I do have a story. I went to a special church in Riverside, CA. (Harvest Crusade) I have since moved back to Las Vegas, but not long after 9-11 happened, the church was selling bracelets of the victims the money was going to NY charities. I was lucky enough to get Eugen's name. I have been searching for a long time and have now ran across all this information on Eugene. Let me tell you putting a face to a name is more than words can say....My prayers are with his family and for his spirit everyday. I really hope that someone writes me back....

May God Bless America...

We are very sorry for your loss of Eugen. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
