Raymond York Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 16, 2001.
'He Always Was My Hero'
Raymond R. York spent nearly two decades fighting blazes and loving the New York Fire Department when a shoulder injury 18 months ago forced him into light duty. But he found a second calling, teaching children about fire safety at the Fire Zone at Rockefeller Center. There, he was "Fireman Ray" to the youngsters whom he captivated.

But on Tuesday, he learned of the World Trade Center attack from a television crew that was doing a story on the Fire Zone, jumped onto a nearby fire truck and headed downtown. After traffic held him up, he hitched a ride on an ambulance and reached the Fire Department's command post at the trade center.

"We're so proud and we just want everybody to know what a great guy Ray was," his wife, Joan, said. "Everybody's saying, 'He's a hero, he's a hero.' He always was my hero. Now the world knows he's a hero."

She described her husband as a man in love with life, a man who insisted on flying the flag. "He was a Little League coach, he was a scout leader — when it came to his kids, he was there for everything," she said. That included building an ice skating rink in the backyard of their Valley Stream, N.Y., home when his son, one of four children, wanted to learn how to skate.

So many lost their lives on 9/11. My son once was a fireman, first responder. I could only be thankful that my son was not one of the many who died that day.
In order for me to make it personal and to think of and pray for the families and friends of some of those heroes, I chose 5 names and pictures of those heroes.
I don't know which website that I was on to choose the names and pictures, but I printed them and cut them out and mounted them on cardstock.
I just want you to know that your loved one, Raymond York, was one of the five that I have been thinking of for 20 years.
I also think of the families who, though they go on, never stop missing their loved one.

From me in North Carolina.

Another year has passed, but
the memory of that day, and what Ray and 342 of his brothers did is still engraved in my heart. They are the true definition of heroes. I have since retired after 29 years in the fire sevice. I am honored and proud to have been in a profession that has men like Ray. If I have been half the firefighter he was. I think I did ok. God Bless and RIP Ray your job is done.

My family from Oklahoma visited the 9/11 Memorials a few years ago. Our tour guide, Daniel, was a friend of Ray's. He spoke highly of him, shared with us how he was a fun and loving person. Although we did not know him personally, I feel honored that we got the opportunity to learn of his amazing and inspiring life. Thinking of Ray and his family today. Thank you, Ray, for your sacrifice. You will never be forgotten.

Decorated for Halloween today and all I could think of was how much fun you had making it special for the kids. The "haunted basement" was a hit with not only our kids but the whole neighborhood. I was given a Ray York memorial T-shirt with kiyak insignia after 9/11 by a firefighter. It has hung in my closet ever since. I wore it only once on 9/11/12. In 2008 I visited my parents graves at Holy Rood and afterward drove to leave and saw the 9/11 memorial. I parked and got out to say a prayer. The very first grave site I approached was that of Ray York. I cried for his untimely death and I visit his grave whenever I visit my parents. His T- shirt still hangs in my closet so I will never forget the sacrifice and horror of 9/11. RIP RAY

Just wanted you to know your sister Barbara and I, saw your picture at a 9/11 memorial ceremony we took part in down here in Fla. Your spirit truly lives on, not only in NYC, but around the country and the World. R.I.P.-Brother-in-Law! Until we meet again, Bob.

Today I had the privilege of carrying this mans name on my turnout coat 110 stories during the Sacramento 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. When I walked up to the registration line I saw the name YORK laying on the table in front of me. Unlike the other fallen brothers YORKS Bio was missing. I knew nothing about this man other than the fact that he made the altimate sacrifice 11 years ago. This was more than enough motivation in its own to get his name to the top with the other 342 fallen brothers. As I reached the last flight of stairs I looked on the wall and saw his picture. I decided to snap a photo so that I could look up his bio once I got back to the fire house to finish my shift. I have to say it is a honor and privilege to have climbed with this mans name on my coat. From everything I have read he seams to have been a true firemans fireman and someone that all fireman should strive to be like. I would like to wish everyone who had the privilege of knowing this great man my deepest condolences and may his inspiring life styles live on forever.
Thank You and God Bless

I lived next-door to Ray's grandmother in Larson Court and he was my best friend John's big brother. Ray was the cool, handsome teenager who was nice to us. I am honored that I had the chance to know him so many years ago. I pleased to know that he grew up to be a wonderful man even before his courage made him a national hero. My thoughts are with his wife and children, his parents Dee and Raymond Sr., and to John Lizzie, Barbara, Butch, Michael and Linda.
