Kristin White Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 16, 2001.
Kristin White had sailed down the Nile, seen the ruins of Sicily and visited Turkey. She spoke Latin and ancient Greek. White, a 65-year-old widow, planned to visit San Francisco to visit friends and wine country. Her airplane, United Flight 93, crashed in Pennsylvania. For 40 years, White, a freelance medical journalist, had lived in the same brownstone apartment in New York City. For almost three years, she had been researching early contributors to medicine and science from Ivy League schools. "She was a sponge," said her only daughter, Allison Vadhan. "She could tell you everything about current events, ancient history. She was the most intellectual person I ever knew." On the morning of Sept. 11, Vadhan was driving to work when she noticed smoke coming from one of the twin towers of the World Trade Center. She pulled over and saw the second plane fly into the second tower. She rushed home. Then Vadhan started wondering about her mother. Was she flying Monday? Tuesday? Wednesday? Vadhan dialed into the Internet and checked the itinerary her mother had sent her on electronic mail. She saw "Flight 93" on the e-mail at the same time the flight number and the crash flashed across her TV screen.

Dear Kristin,
Its cool to know you were a freelance writer. In fact, I have been writing lots of messages for 9-11 victims. But I can imagine you stood up to four hijackers on board United 93, where acts of valor prevented another evil strike.

My daughter Clare and I met Kristin through her husband - my friend and Gallipoli companion Jim Gould. We remember with fondness the evening we spent with Kristin and Jim in NYC in 1999, and I sadly recall my conversations with Kristin in the weeks before Jim's death.

Kristin was so full of life and her cruel death was a life cut short when she had so much more to give.

She is always in my thoughts and we shall remember her - here in UK - this coming weekend.

Happy Birthday Kristin! 75 years young.

After all these years, I just learned that you were aboard Flight 93. You were, most probably, an in-law of mine through your marriage to Mr. Gould (I'm still working on that). Now I must research your life as well!

August 31, 2010

Kristin, I am thinking of you now. Your birthday was this past weekend and I thought of you then too.If my math is right, you would be 74 years old. You are always remembered. Be well

Kristin,
thank you for everything you did. You inspired me by your actions aboard flight 93. You are in our hearts always and forever. My school raised money for you and your fellow passenger's new, future, permanent memorial. It will be beautiful. I hope you will enjoy it. You deserve it. After what all of you did that tragic day one way we want to honor you and say thank you is by building this memorial. R.I.P ???

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To Kristen's daughter,

Your mother sounds like an amazing woman. I'm so happy for you that you two shared a beautiful life together. And I am so sorry for the sudden way you had to learn of her passing. My mother died when I was a baby. I experience her though still - 30 years later, because I know the strength of a mothers love now that I have children of my own. I believe a parents love is the closest example we have to God's love - It is so strong and lasting that any seperation, no matter what kind, could change it. Even though she is in Heaven now and you are still here I hope you can find a comfort in knowing that her love will always be wherever you are.

God bless you always, Marsha

I first met Kristin at one of her favorite Jazz places in the Village she loved so much. We would talk about books, music, poetry, people and politics. She was always very friendly yet with a quiet reserve

that made you want to know her even better. I just came across her card tonight and it made me think about how much she will be missed by not only her family, but by all of us whose lives she touched. Her joy of life was typically that of a real New Yorker and she shared those Bright Moments with everyone she met.

To the family of Kristin, first let me say how very sorry I'm for your lost of a dear and I'm certain a loved mother. As an American of this Country I'd like to say your mother and the other passengers on that flight are the most couragous people our Country have seen in along time, No Greater Love than to give your life for your brother or sister. I'm sure God our Father was so proud that they chose to give there lives to spare the lives of some many more Americans, I know as a Christian I am very proud of the love and sacrifice each indivuial made on September 11, 2001. May God continue to heal your heart and give you the peace to know your mom is in a far better place than we are now, God Bless and keep you.

We are deeply sorry for our nation's loss of Kristin. May Kristin's great knowledge, her warm heart, life and love live on in all who love her. May precious memories of times shared with Kristin lighten the sorrow in your hearts. Our hearts cry deeply with you in America's loss of a hero.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I knew Kristin when I lived in New York from 1989-1990. She was charming, intelligent, sophisticated, warm and beautiful. She was the quintessential New Yorker, yet she could have well been a Southern Lady. I learned she was a victim when I saw her photograph flash across the television screen weeks later. Kristin was soft-spoken but always had something thoughtful to contribute to the conversation. Friends loved to be around her. She relished New York and cherished her daughter.

I am so sorry for your loss. I know the pain of losing loved ones, but I can assure you, you will survive this and be stronger for it. I pray that God will be a comfort to you in this time. Kristin sounds like an amazing woman. Perhaps you can write a book about her adventures. It would be a wonderful read.
