Marie Pappalardo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2001.
There are so many things to say about my mother, Marie Pappalardo, who was on Flight 175. She was 53 going on 33, so full of life and spunk. She had many enjoyments in her life such as her love of Affirmed, the Triple Crown winning racehorse, traveling, seeing shows and concerts ranging from opera to rock – the list is endless. She had a Boston accent like no other even after living in California for 12 years – you could tell she was from New England a mile away. She never completely left Massachusetts. She had an annual ritual of coming back here for my birthday, and to replenish her faith and enjoy the Italian pastries at the Feast of the Three Saints.

For people who did not know her, I would say she was hard working, intelligent and very independent. She put herself through college while married and raising a family. Her career as a Controller and Production Manager at ALA in California was something she took very seriously. She also took very seriously caring for animals, whether it be by donating money or taking care of strays. I remember times when she gathered stray cats from her neighborhood and took them to the vet for necessary shots and to be fixed. (She found homes for most of them, and the others she took care of herself as she did her own two at home, Mickey and Mouse, who were her pride and joy.)

My mom told me that she would someday return to her home in Massachusetts. Our family's only regret is not being able to spend those years to come with her. She was truly one of a kind and the world will never be the same without her.
Tribute submitted by Maria Koutny and Family.

Protector of Cats

Marie Pappalardo's passions were deep and varied. Once, with a friend, she finagled her way into the stall of Affirmed, the Triple Crown-winning racehorse, and hugged him. "Because he always ran with such love, and he was strong, he was something she always loved," said Ms. Pappalardo's daughter, Maria Koutny.

She was profoundly devoted to the Feast of the Three Saints, celebrated on Labor Day weekend at her home church, the Holy Rosary in Lawrence, Mass. When she neared the end of her pregnancy and was told that her daughter would be born that Sunday, she said she would not give birth until she had been to the feast. And she was right.

Ms. Pappalardo, 53, who was returning home to Paramount, Calif., on Flight 175 after visiting the Boston area — for the feast and Ms. Koutny's birthday — was also a devoted protector of cats, catching wild ones and taking them to her vet for shots and spaying.

"She made a hole in her garage so they could come in and eat and get out," Ms. Koutny said. "One was Goofy, one was Daisy, one was Minnie, they all had those kinds of names. Hopefully the person living there now is still feeding the feral cats."

22 years seems like a lifetime ago in some ways and in other ways it seems like only yesterday. I have somehow lived my life and have a truly amazing daughter for which I am blessed but I always think how much better life would have been with you in it.
I am sad you will never meet your grandchild and she will never know you love but I try to keep you alive through stories. I still miss you Mom and I guess I always will ❤

My name is John Adragna and I reside in New York City. I am a supporter of America"s 911 Association. This oraganization raises funds through donations for the family members (children) who lost their love ones in these attacks. I did not know your Mother Marie but after reading here about her I can feel what a warm, loving and caring person she was. The association gathered motor cycle riders from all over the country. The ride started in Sommerset PA went down to the Pentagon and back up to Ground Zero. We were all given names of someone who perished in one of the tragic events and I am proud to say that I brought your MOM's name with me to the memorials in Sommerset PA,the Pentagon and Ground Zero. Many prayers went out to her and your family. God Bless You All.

12 years have passed but the memory, the love and the pain seem like it was just yesterday. So much has happened and changed since that horrible day - the world is not the same. As you know I have the most precious daughter I could ever ask for and I know in my heart that she was a gift from you and Dad in Heaven. Although you may not be here with us I keep your memory alive each and every day in my heart and in Isabella's. It saddens me that she will never meet her Grandparents but at only four years old she asks questions and speaks of both of you.
Thank you to everyone who year after year leaves messages on this site - it is so touching - thank you!!

I also wanted to add that we appreciate the people in California who also continue to remember my Mother on the West Coast. Thanks again for your kindness.

Thank you all for the thoughtful words in remembering my mother on this 10th year anniversary of 9/11 and taking time out of your day to share them.

Dear Marie.. Today makes 10 years since that horrible day. I think of you often and remember what a wonderful person you were. I loved that you loved you cats "Mickey" and "Mouse" so much. I was always happy to see you come in to the animal hospital because I knew a happy, funny time would be had. Your uplifting personality will always make you special to me. I still have the little gift you gave to me when I was expecting my son Andy almost 21 years ago. Rest in peace my friend.

Hello to all the family and friends of Marie Pappalardo. Every Sunday I walk my dog near the memorial site here in Paramount Ca. I remember meeting your husband Mr. Pappalardo about 4 years ago as he played a beautiful song by Robin Thick. Everytime I hear that song I'm reminded by you and almost brings me to tears because I connect that song to your memory. I have never and my life knew you, and just thank your husband for sharing his story of loss. Today me and my dog placed a flower on the bench marked in honor of your life. God Bless the family and continue to keep your rememberance alive. Thanks a bunch :)

To the family and friends of Marie, we share the same last name but I was born and raised in New York so I doubt we are related. I remember your Mother in my prayers and see on this site she was loved by so many as well as being such a beautiful person, inside and out.

Although she is gone she will never be forgotten in the Pappalardo family as well as so many others. I offer my sympathy and love to all of you on this the 10th anniversary of 9/11

As many have said today, may God watch over you and keep you safe in His ever loving arms. God Bless you all, and God bless America....

Dear Marie,

As the 10th anniversary approaches - as with every anniversary - I can't help but remember you. My heart still aches for you and your family and you will NEVER be forgotten!! I still to this day can't watch the video of 9/11 - it hurts all over and I get images of you. I have come to grips over what happened to our country but to this day - I have a hard time with what happened to you. Not that I don't feel for the other victims because I do but with you being my Mom's neighbor - it's still so unbelievable to imagine. You will forever be missed and please know that I think of you every 9/11.

Ma -

I think of you (and Dad) so much - I miss you both more than I can express in words.
I can not believe it will be the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 this year - as anyone knows who has lost someone they love it is as if time almost stands still and the scars remain.
One of the biggest regrets I will ever have is that you will never get to meet your grandughter Isabella - I know you and her would have shared a special bond and you would have loved and spoiled her to pieces. I promise to teach her about you, your beliefs and traits.
I love and miss you so much - I wish you were still here.

Love,
Your Daughter Maria

Heavenly Father, I uplift Marie's family today on the anniversary of her tragic death. I pray that you will comfort them and give them peace. As they think about Marie's life, that they can remember with fondness the many good qualities and fun times they had together. Lord, I lost my mom at a young age and I know that you never get over missing them, but that you have given me the memories to make the hurt less each year. Comfort her family in a way that only you can do.

Today is the fifth anniversary since you left us Marie. We don't need a lot of words to proclaim the obvious. Just thought you'd smile if you knew that the money clip you bought for me at an Indian Trading Post and gave me for a birthday gift, is carried EVERY DAY, at home or in whatever State or Country I travel. You gave it to me during a business assignment to Ca. My birthday occured during a Cinco De Mayo period, and you offered to join me for dinner so I wouldn't be alone on that date. Always the gracious one, you provided a gift to boot.

Each time I place my hand on the clip, it reminds me of you. I will never forget.................

I just found out about this site (3/30/04) but would like to write something on Marie's Guest Book.

I worked for Marie for approx. 2 yrs at (ALA) as a Secretary. Although it has been 2 1/2 years since the tragedy, I constantly remember Marie & her Boston accent. ("Tonic Waaater", or when she use to say "Boston").

Maria...She always use to tell me, "If my daughter calls, I don't care who I am talking to, or what I am doing, make sure you get my attention & tell me she's on the line." I sometimes had to put signs on her window to let her know you where on the phone. But she always talked about you & I remember when she told me you where going to get married, she was very happy.

Just by the way she talked about you, was very clear & obvious that she really loved you with all her heart. It's sad that she is no longer here with us. Just remember that your mother is your Guardian Angel & will always watch over you & your family.

I am really sorry for your loss. My heart & prayers go out to you and your whole family.

S. Santoyo...My heart & prayers go out to you & your family.

Ma -

Today has been two years since you left this world and I would swear it only feels like two months. People always say "it gets easier with time" and although doing daily activities may get a little easier losing someone who is the most important person in your life NEVER seems to gets easier. If I could have one wish it would be to feel you hug me again and call me "Miss Maria" or "Mum Bear" like you always did. What comforting words those were - I can only pray you are in a better, safer place now. It is amazing all the people who thought how wonderful you were - me and Lance, aunts and uncles and lots of friends not to mention your cats! I love you Ma.

Love,

Maria & Lance Koutny

As Marie's next door neighbor in Paramount, CA this event became so personal on any every day basis. It's still so difficult and my condolescense go to her family. On a personal note..since we all felt so helpless I felt the only tribute I could really do for Marie was to continue to feed her stray cats. They would always run to her garage door when it was opened and they still don't trust me like they did with Marie. To her family Marie is remembered every day by her cats and my humble way of remembering her. I read all the tributes with sadness at the senselessness of it.

Also, with a warmth that Marie is remembered by so many. Thanks to Marie for bringing joy, excitement, comfort to her friend.

1 Mile was walked to honor the life of Marie and all the family friends and loved ones she left behind. May you find some comfort in knowing that you do not grieve alone and that she will never be forgotten.

Marie, Your brother is my brother in-law. I have sent messages on other sites. As with all messages, we miss you always and will see justice. Your presence among us is missed, your untimely death will be justified. May the lord be with you always. God bless.

I was at work and in my office when the first news of the attack circulated around my department. When the full scope of the days events began to sink in, I took the rest of the day off and went home and school and hugged my four children. That's all I could do. I am sorry for your losses.
