"Follow me, Dad."

With just those words — part request, part challenge — Christopher and Scott Reinig could get their father, Thomas, to do most anything. Like swoop down the slipperiest ski slopes behind them. Or climb the Grand Tetons with them. Or spend Father's Day competing in a triathlon that taxed the 48-year-old's stamina and his sense of humor.

"He beat me on the running part, but of course I had the better overall time," said Scott Reinig, 20, a competitive swimmer. "He blamed it on the swimming."

Mr. Reinig, a vice president at eSpeed, was not a sore loser, even when it came to being beaten at golf by his wife, Jeanne. "He always had fun and laughed," she said. "He wasn't a good-time Charlie. He just enjoyed life."

And he did everything for his family. When the boys were small, Mr. Reinig moved them all to London for three years when he took a job there so they would learn to appreciate the world. They returned to New Jersey, but when the boys enrolled in a private school in Morris County a few years later, Mr. Reinig moved to Bernardsville to shorten their commute.

"My dad was always calling home, a couple of times a day, every day, and all he'd say is, 'I'm just checking in,'" Scott Reinig said. "There wasn't any other reason than that."

Dear Tom - You brought me on to your team at Lehman in 1991. I remember well how you very much enjoyed your work and how you cared for your fellow colleagues. I also remember how you often spoke so fondly and proudly of your family. Lastly, I clearly remember how honest you were. Your old friends Rick Z. and I will tip our hats and raise a glass to you next week when we get together for our annual golf round - you will be missed but not forgotten !

To the Reinig family. I worked with Tommy, years ago at Tammy Brook Country Club in Cresskill, NJ along with my dad, Tommy's football coach, Abbie Pingitore. I was a freshman in HS & he had just graduated.I remember Tommy teaching me what "grog" was and introducing me to Tao principles. I remember thinking that he was probably one of the most learned persons I had ever met. I only found out that Tommy was one of the 9/11 heros, a few months ago. My dad & I want to send our heartfelt prayers to your family and know, that he made an impressinon on a young 14 year old, all those many years ago. Blessings and peace my friends.

Although I never met Mr. Reinig personally, my parents were neighbors of the Reinig's (on the same street) in Bernardsville NJ and always spoke so highly of them. My mom always referred to Mrs. Reinig (Jeannie) as her "walking buddy" and always bragged about how musically inclined her sons were. In fact, their sons played at my parents Christmas party one year and my mother was so proud to see the phenomenal job the boys did. My heartfelt condolences and continued prayers are with the Reinig family.

God Bless,

My sympathies go out to the family of Tom Reinig. I have just heard of his passing this year, 11 years after, but my grief is no less at finding out the world has lost such a wonderful person. I was in his class in high school and will always remember him as a person of true quality. God Bless

I had heard through the grapevine of his loss, and I remembered and grieved a long time. I went to school with Tom from Lincoln Elementary to Bergenfield High. We played football together, and even a few games of whiffle ball. Sometimes even walked to school together. We had some classes together. Seeing his photo, he reminds me how he looked when we were kids. He was always a real friendly person. I extend my deepest sympathy to his family.

Dear Tom,

You do not know me, nor have you ever heard of me. My name is Mariah. I am a sophomore attending the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Last Friday my school had a ceremony for the victims of 9/11. Each of us was given a piece of paper with a name on it. I received yours. I was curious as to who you were and found this page as a result. Reading all of the messages, it is clear that you were a phenomenal person. I was honored to hold up your name. It saddens me that so many wonderful people like yourself had to pass away so soon. I will forever remember your name now. My thoughts and prayers will always go out to your family and loved ones.

Tom was a good friend of my sister, and my entire family. He was a really great guy, and like a big brother to me. I have many fond memories of Tom...watching him play football for the Bergenfield Bears, riding around with him in his light blue Volkswagen Beetle, spending time playing catch, and going to the beach. Tom was a true gentleman, and I am grateful to have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I had the pleasure of working with Tom at Lehmans in London. Tom was the kind of man you never forgot. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word and so much fun to be around. He will always be fondly remembered.

My thoughts and prayers go to his family who I have often thought of and prayed for.

Tom,

I heard your name called today at the 9/11 remembrance ceremony. I have not forgotten you. I enjoyed being in the office next to you during our time at ABN. Your sense of humor and love for your sons is what I remember most about you. Miss you. You were a great colleague.

I first met Tom at Yale when he came to get his laser surgery. I will never forget when he came to the office for his first visit the day after surgery. He was so excited that he could not sit down. He had such a wonderful smile and it was a priviledge to know him. Kim Hart

Jeanne,

I am remembering today how happy we all were on November 24, 2000, at the Milnor/Clemente christening. That is how I will remember Tommy--happy with his life, with you, and with the boys. I hope that you and the boys are finding peace with your loss.

Mr. Reinig was a wonderful man, and it was a honor to be associated with him. His visits to Yale were well anticipated and received. He always had a smile, and a funny story. His trust will never be forgotten. I will truly miss this gentleman

Although I only worked with Chris and Scott for one summer I remember them very well. Both are very friendly people whose compassion was no doubt learned from their father whom I only had the priveledge of meeting a couple of times. After lifeguarding one day his sons welcomed me back to their house before going out for the night where Mr. Reinig invited me to sit at his table and made sure I was well fed before leaving his home. To Chris, Scott, and Mrs. Reinig I am terribly sorry for your loss. I hope that the years of fond memories you have can help to assuage your pain.

Father we entrust our brother Thomas to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.

I had the absolute pleasure of working with Tom in the early 90's at Lehman Brothers and most recently for a few years at ABN AMRO in NY prior to his position at Espeed. Being a newcomer to the ABN firm, Tom was the first person to come over to me, invite me to lunch and give me the lay of the land. For the next three years i was fortunate to sit opposite him on the trading floor and share a close camaraderie. In an often hectic trading floor atmosphere, Tom always found the time to talk about his family and share pictures from recent outings (climbing the Grand Tetons was the best)and would always be planning the next trip (storing everything on his Palm Pilot). He was so proud of his sons who i had the pleasure of meeting on a few occasions during their visits to the trading floor. Being a recent newlywed myself, I can only hope and aspire to be the kind of father and husband that Tom was during his short time with us. He will be sorely missed and but we are all better people for having known him.

Although I met Mr. Reinig only a handful of times, I have been in awe of the number of people touched by his life. Only a great man could have such an impact.

I am privileged to count Chris among my closest friends. My thoughts are always with him, Mrs. Reinig, and Scott. It is reassuring to know that Mr. Reinig's memory will be survived by an equally great family.

Although I never met Tom,I feel I am getting to know him through my new friendship with Jeanne. As she shares her memories of their happy times together, Tom comes alive through her smiles, stories and joyful expressions. He was a special man whose spirit will never die. When I talk to Jeannie or her boys and see their vibrance and passion for life, that speaks loudly for the happiness in their hearts. People who have been touched by a special love will always exude a glow that comes from true contentment and inner peace. Tom left his mark on all of them, and his optimism has given them a reason to aceept life as he always did. Seeing how well Jeanne is carrying on is a credit to the legacy of strength Tom left his family. Ann Tannen

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
