Canfield Boone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2001.
As a student of history, Army Col. Canfield "Buddy" Boone knew the significance of all of the major battlefields and cemeteries honoring those who fell in battle in the Washington, D.C., area.

Their proximity was one of the reasons the 53-year-old Indiana native was willing to move to Washington to take a job with the Pentagon in 1990.

After the attack on the Pentagon on Sept. 11, Boone's old personnel office will now join that list of battlefields, and he will soon be buried in its most famous cemetery, Arlington National.

"Buddy would have liked that," said Linda, his wife of 31 years.

Born and raised in Milan, Ind., Boone went on to earn a major in history and political science at Butler University in Indianapolis, where he met his wife.

The couple had three sons, 23, 21 and 18, for whom Boone coached baseball over the years "and being a Hoosier, of course, basketball too," his wife said.

After graduating from college he started student teaching, but then took a job selling insurance.

During the Vietnam War, Boone signed up for the National Guard, doing weekend drills and a couple weekends every summer.

But he stayed in the Guard part-time until deciding to go to active duty with the Army in 1986. For five years with the Army, he taught ROTC at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, beginning a full-time career he loved.

"He was very patriotic. And I think he liked the order of it and the feeling that he was really doing something for his country," his wife said.

"We are all here for a micro instant. We don’t fret about the eternity which preceded us, and we obsess about the eternity to follow. Yet, in the 4fh dimension of time, each moment is also an eternity. For us, mere mortals, the shame is when we waste those moments, as the sum total reverberates forever, happy or sad, as it emanated from the beginning. It is not how long we live which matters, but rather how we live."

On behalf of all of his friends at Butler University, I would like to again extend our deepest condolences on your loss. Buddy was revered by his peers and earned lifelong respect and admiration of all fellow alumni and friends who came into contact with him. His undying support, guidance, and friendship was akin to a lantern in the night. May you be comforted, as we are with fond memories of his wonderful nature and friendship, and service to his country.

I served as a cadet at EIU under, then CPT Boone, who taught Military Science in the ROTC Dept. I just learned of this site and felt compelled to tell my experience with this great man. He was a wonderful officer and a good friend to all of the cadets and cadre. Everyone liked and respected CPT Boone. He led by example and was always willing to help cadets, no matter the issue. God bless him and his family. I thank him for his leadership, dedication, and patriotic service.

Buddy, it just doesn't seem that long ago that you and I sat in the stands at the Indy 500. It was 1986. We talked about many things, including our military experiences as young men and your decision to go active duty in the Army.
I met you through Joe and Judy, your Butler friends, and I told them later: "Buddy is truly one of the nicest guys I've ever met!"
The years went buy and then 13 ago today the unbelievable happened. I talked with Joe a few days later and learned that "one of the nicest guys I ever met" was on duty at the Pentagon that horrible day.
You will always be in my memories brother! Thank you for your service and ultimate sacrifice. You are sorely missed.

To the family - As with all of America, I was horrified at the occurrences of 9/11, but even more so when I learned that Lt. Boone was lost during that tragic even as well. I have wondered for years. but feel that I am correct in that I believe I went to elementary school in Milan Indiana with Buddy Boone, and that his mother was my school teacher in 3rd grade? I may be incorrect, and it may be 4th grade, but I remember her as a lovely lady with a soft voice, but who inspired her students to learn and strive with dignity, for their dreams. Obviously she instilled the same belief in her own children, because the young man I remember from elementary school, was bright, funny, and a good friend. My family moved from Milan, but my grandparents lived there until l985. I know we lost touch with our school mates, but I had to tell you that after all these years, your family still impacts my life through my childhood memories. I
am now serving my 3rd term as a city council woman, and this year I am the first woman council president in my city. You see, those wonderful small town values stay with you for life! All of my prayers to you, and my heartfelt thanks for Lt. Boone's service, and sacrifice for his country, and for the loss for his family, as well as their gift to us through "Buddy".

I often think about the impact you had on the youth baseball team you found time to coach... you taught our son Shawn good sportsmanship and how to live happy in life. You were one who guided his life choices and he graduated USMA 05 - the class of 9/11. I know God holds you in his hands!

I'll always remember the first time we met as freshmen at Butler. Your gigantic smile led to a 4 year friendship. Many years passed and it was a thrill to see you and Linda back on campus with your son during college visitation. A few years later I met your son and your mother at your memorial in Milan. You would be proud of him. Peace be you and your family. See you down the road.

Hunter will pay tribute to "Buddy" this year, along with dozens of other students who are paying tribute to those who perished. I remember talking to LTC Boone on the phone and him e-mailing me some personnel slides for us to view while I was stationed in Puerto Rico working for the Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel. He was always very courteous and very helpful. I always asked him about Washington DC and how it was to work in the Pentagon. Even though I never had the opportunity to personally meet him, I feel like I lost a family member, probably because, in the Army, we are a big family. I am eternally grateful for your service Sir.

Dear Boone Family,

My deepest sympathy goes out to your family in your time of need. I recently lost my sister CSmsgt Debra J. Hess Air Force in March.I know what your family is going through as my family shares in your grief. I wanted your family to all know that I have been wearing a "Mercy Band" initiated by my church, Calvary Chapel with LT COL CANFIELD BOONE'S name on it everyday. I chose the Pentagon in some way to honor my sister's military service. I wake up each morning and say "good morning Canfield" along with a prayer. Your family is in my prayers and in my heart.

Always in my thoughts and prayers. Rhonda Griego
