DD,

You were always the calm within the storms.

To all the "Hickersons", I remember playing and running all through the family's LARGE home and the woods just up the road with David and Joe Dan. Your Mom would always have snacks for us too. And all the times spent at SS Baptist Church. With a family as giving as that I can see where DD got his values base from! These are the memories that make up life!
Thank you DD and to all the Family!

Jerry and I served together as Executive Officers in the office of the Assistant Secretary for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology from 200-2001. As so many others have observed, Jerry was the consumate professional officer and gentleman ... hard working and dedicated to his family and his country. I have been thinking about him so much in recent weeks and my thoughts always go back to his kindness and steady, positive attitude. He was a warrior who served his country to the highest standard and is a great example for all of us. My heart goes out to his wife, children and other family members. May God bless you.

I had the honor of knowing Jerry/DD in our young school days at Durant and Yazoo City, MS. I do remember him as a very respectful, honest, quiet, good guy. I think I always knew that he was going to grow into a very honorable, respectful man. And he did. I remember Mrs. Carolyn and Mr. Carl Hicks always having their family in services at Southside Baptist Church. Though so many years have passed, I still think back on those teen-age days and have actually remembered having a conversation with Jerry, when I was the "new kid" at Yazoo City. When we realized we shared the same birthday, only I was 1 year older. Every year, on July 30th, I wish him happy birthday. To all of Jerry's family, he will never be forgotten. I will always continue to wish him happy birthday. I will always remember to keep him and all of you in my prayers. And every September, I say a special prayer for Jerry and Joey Ferguson. I will always keep Jerry and Joey in my heart, knowing that they gave the ultimate gift to all of America, for all of us. God bless your family.

in liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life.

And every gain define!

I have a son in the Army and although we did not personally know LT Col. Dickerson, I know the sacrifice they make daily in pursuing the military as a career. I had Ornaments made in December 2001 for all my children and niece & Nephews, a flag encircled by a wreath with a banner that says, Always in our hearts, we will not forget; September 11th 2001.My son left college and joined the Army because of this event and I hope all my boys will ensure their children and Granchildren keep the history alive. God Bless the families. We continue to pray for you

Our family recently visited the Pentagon Memorial. In looking through the names of the fallen, you stood out by being from Mississippi. We are proud to know that you were so highly thought of and remembered. May God Bless your family as they continue their lives without you and by living a godly life, and serve and follow our Lord and Savior. I pray you will all be reunited again someday in Heaven!! We felt better after visiting this memorial to know that you were honored for your heroic acts. God Be with your family, always.

Happy Birthday D.D.! Your are in our thoughts and hearts every day. Your legacy lives on in your two wonderful children, Beth and Will. You also live on in the lives and hearts of the countless number of people that you touched over the years. You are in our hearts always. We love and miss you every day.

I remember you as one of the finest Second Lieutenants I ever had the privilege to work with and in many cases trained you. I remember when you first arrived to Berlin Germany, C94 a young green 2LT, what a wonderful officer you developed into. The days we shared and worked hard in Berlin, the Salute Team that we trained and conducted many salutes, to the times we hung out and palyed cards. The days that you spoke so highly of your wife, she was always there smiling and keeping tabs on you. Sir, I salute you and thank you for touching my life, thank you for your wonderful service to our nation. May God Bless your family and be with them always.....Sir keep the salutes going!

MAJ D,

(You'll always be "MAJ D" to me!)

I'm glad I took the extra time to square away your bunk for you those rare occassions where you got to sleep during those Korean winter FTXs. You didn't want anyone to go to any extra trouble but dammit man, you were the frickin' Ops Officer! The last thing you needed to be doing was stumbling around in the dark after a 3-hour planning meeting trying to build a cot in freezing weather!

Page, Beth, and Will - I've never forgotten how Jerry could tell stories that made me laugh so hard my face and sides would hurt, and I had to beg him to stop (but he didn't, because there was always one more!). He has remained vividly in my thoughts and prayers and memories, as have you all. Now that I am working in the Pentagon, I make an extra effort to remember his touching, sweet ways with you all, and how extraordinarily funny and joyful he was. Dear Dickerson family.I wanted to put this in on Sept.11.But I just could not bring myself to do it.I'm sorry for that.I just wanted you to know,my family has planted a Magnolia tree in out front yard in Jerry's honor. At first the little tree went into shock. As I'm sure you all did on the terrible day.I reckon we all did.Funny thing is,I water that tree and water it.But it just won't do very good. But when it rains,it really gets more and more growth on it.Way I figure it is,the water I put on it does not do as nearly as good as the water our Father puts on it.I hope and pray our Father will place His Holy hands on all of you.I wish you grace peace and love.

[written September, 2002]

Dear friends........

Hello Page, Hey Beth and Will

We miss you so much! There was such a collective ache in the hearts of those of us down here in this little corner of Shootingstar Drive tonight, where we've shared so much! Life has gone on for us here, as I know it has for you so far away... it's just been so different. I know that Jerry wouldn't want things to be so different.... I often sense his uplifting presence when I see and hear the bubbly, laughing voices of the yard children playing just outside... I'm sure that makes him smile.

We really want to just wrap you up in our loving, prayerful thoughts this evening of "remembering" and share a small view into the gathering we had tonight .... in tribute to our Hero, Jerry, and his beautiful family. God very generously gave us neighbors who truly understand into whose home they moved and we are all so thankful. Again, we're pretty sure Jerry keeps that in his watch also. This new mom and little girl joined us as our little "family" came together at 6:30 this evening at the corner, bringing candles and knowing that we simply needed to just be with each other. Not entirely certain of just how we'd proceed... one of the smaller members suggested we sing "America, the beautiful"... then recite the "Pledge of Allegiance", facing the Flag flying outside the Dickerson house. We all held hands and sang from our souls. Most of us finished the Pledge through our tears...

We offer you our loving memories of someone who touched us each in our own way, but all of us to the core, because that's who Jerry was... and is... and always will be for us! Each one of us is so much better a person, just from knowing him... because that was... and will always remain his genuine gift... of sincerity and goodness... and the legacy continues.

May I take one moment to say a heartfelt thank you to "mama" Carolyn...your words remind us how fortunate we are to have known him.

So goodnight for now Page and "Beff" and Wil(bert)...Godspeed and Great Hope to "all-y'all"! We'll talk again soon.

Love Dave, Liz, Emmie and Kate

June 17, 2002

Yesterday was Father's Day and I found myself sitting in church saying a prayer. I found myself asking God to grant Beth and Will a peace on a day that I knew would probably be one of the hardest days of their young lives, their first Father's Day without their dad. D.D., as he was known by his family and close friends, was not only a terrific officer, he was a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, friend and especially a devoted father to his two children. He gave as much time to Beth and Will as their father as he did to any other position he might have held. So my prayer for them yesterday and everyday since September is that they will always know that even though he can no longer be with them on a day to day basis that he will always be with them in their hearts and in their memories.

As for me, growing up as an only child, I never had a brother of my own. D.D. was not only my brother-in-law by marriage but he was the brother I never had and he was my friend. I miss him terribly and there is not a day that goes by that a memory of times spent together doesn't pop into my mind and I smile.
