Charles Sabin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2001.
Charles E. Sabin planned to retire from his Pentagon job in less than two years. He looked forward to spending his days in rural Virginia golfing, fishing and snow skiing, said his brother Martin.

Sabin, 54, served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam, leaving the service with the rank of captain. He then worked at the Pentagon as a civilian for years, but his family said they could not reveal what his job was. Sabin left for work at 7 a.m. and was meeting with his staff when American Airlines Flight 77 hit the building Tuesday. "He was at ground zero. There's no chance he could have survived," his brother said. "But it's still hard to realize he's really gone. He was a good neighbor, a great leader, and most of all he loved his country."

I met Chuck while working at Vint Hill. I remember him as a kind, supportive man. When I read the names from the 9-11 losses at the Pentagon and saw his, I was beyond sad. When I visited the memorial in NYC, I went to the edge of the pool, looked down, and I had walked directly to the plaque with his name. On this date, you are always in my thoughts, Chuck.

I remember Chuck from the Monsignor Bonner High School Band color guard. He was a fine young man. I knew him only a short time while at Msgr. Bonner. I saw the list of persons that were victims on 9/11/2001 and when I read his name I didn't immediately make the connection, but sadly it was his name on that list. He would have been my age at that time, about 54 years old. Very sad loss. Thomas D'Ulisse, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia PA 2/25/2019

I was active duty Airforce and was assigned to Andrews AFB. We supported the Pentagon and surrounding hospitals, bases, and facilities. We worked closely with a man named Chuck Sabin, who everyone loved. This must be our beloved friend. We worked by phone, and never had the opportunity to meet. I am sorry for the loss of Chuck. He was dear to many people. I hope his family and friends find comfort in their fond memories.

I think of Chuck often. I knew him since we were both very little. We grew up next door to each other, and played together. I think it's so sad that he never got to retire as I did. To see his grandchildren grow up. I will always remember Chuck, my little buddy from Drexel Hill, as well as his brothers Rick and Marty. I hope God blesses you all, and I feel sure that Chuck is watching down on us.

We miss this man with the twinkling eyes.
On my mind is a toast I shared with Chuck at an officer's club in 1989 or so, which I had picked up from the movie Gardens of Stone: "To us and those like us. Damn few left."

My thoughts and prayers are with all Chuck's family and friends on this the 10th Anniversary weekend (how can it be??). I worked for Chuck at Vint Hill Farms Station and used to drive with him and the "boys" to NJ on TDY! A GREAT boss and wonderful human being.

Seeing Chuck's face on this page is just how I remember him -- I feel for his family who lost him too soon, like I lost my father (who counted Chuck Sabin one of his closest friends) so way too soon. I want to reach out to his sons and just hold their hands.

A day has not gone by in nine years that we have not thought of Chuck. His smile, his laugh and joy for life are forever etched in our hearts. Thank you to all of you who have stayed in touch with the wonderful memories of Chuck. Life is a true blessing and we live it to the fullest each day with thoughts of Chuck. Love to all, Marty and Debbie Sabin. Stay in touch.

We are thinking of Chuck today. Sam had received a birthday card on 10 Oct that said see you soon. They always went fishing together and he was due here on the Outer Banks within a week. For years they met every morning for coffee and for jokes.

I don't remember my grandfather too much. Infact I only have one memory of him today. I was only six years old at the time and that had been the first funeral I had ever went to. But I do remember just loving him, so much. Just the overwhelming feeling of loving him and always being so happy to see him. Now I see why with all these messages. He was good and kind, and had lots of friends old, and new, who love him as much as I do. Nine years and I will never forget. Love you pop pop.

I'm thinking of Chuck today. We crossed paths when I was a relatively new Army civilian out at Vint Hill Farms Station in Virginia. I liked Chuck very much. He was smart, funny, and his eyes always twinkled. I was so very sad when I found that he had died at the Pentagon on 9-11. Such a loss.

Chuck and I were high school classmates at Monsignor Bonner (Drexel Hill, PA) for four years. I have fond memories of him. He always had a smile on his face and laughing about something. I can picture him today just as he was back then and this is how I remember him. To all of his family please know that you are in my daily prayers. I'm sure he is in heaven looking down on us and helping us on this journey we call life. Thank you for this memorial.

Hello. My name is Nikki Smith. I am 16 years old and I live in Sioux Falls, SD. I am writing the family of Charles E. Sabin to let them know that I participated in the Rolling Requiem. At exactly 8:46 in each time zone, there was at least one choir who sang Mozart's Requiem. It began in Malaysia and went all the way around the world. Each individual participating had a button with the name of a victim of the tragedies. The name on my button was that of Charles. I was truly touched to be able to access this information and feel that I got to know the real person. It really made it real for me.

My deepest sympathies along with my prayers are with your family.

Love, Nikki

I know Chuck through his close friend, Linda Livingston. Linda always spoke with a smile - or outright laugh - of her dear friend Chuck. When he was killed, Linda was shattered to have lost someone who meant so much. He was clearly an exceptional friend to her, and to so many more. I mourn for Chuck and all who loved him. And I know he lives on in them every day.

I never had the pleasure or the oppurtunity to meet Charles Sabin. If he had not been a victim of the Pentagon attack I would have met him at his sons' Pauls' upcoming wedding. I am best friend to Pauls' fiance Michele. I know that Mr. Sabin was a great man by the wonderful son he raised. He left a wonderful legacy to be proud of. All my prayers and love go out to the family, and I regret I never will get to meet the man who was the father to someone I admire and care for.

Chuck and I were teammates on the ROTC Drill Team at Drexel University. His senior year he was the team commander. We went our separate ways after he graduated (I was a few years behind him) but I remember him as a "strac troop" and someone to be admired and looked up to as a role model.

My sympathies to his family and friends.

We thank Charles for helping protect America during his time in the military. Such a devotion to others comes with a brave, warm and caring heart. May Charles's courage, life and love continue living in those who love him. May the sorrow in your hearts be lightened by warm memories of times together. We are deeply sorry for your great loss. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

My name is Debbie Sabin and I am married to Marty, Chuck's brother.

To all those who have given us so much love and support we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Chuck was a wonderful brother and is truely missed by all of us. To lose someone you love so tragically is so difficlt but because of the continuous love and suppost we are receiving, it makes this burden alittle easier to bear. We hold onto the memory of how much Chuck just loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest. May we all live our lives the way Chuck did. Thanks again to all of you and please drop us a note, we loved to hear from you. Debbie

Paul, looked your Dad up on the net after our conversation in the Mobile chicken wing location. Sorry to hear again with my own eyes, he was a real special guy wasn't he? I was the one who had lost his sister earlier this past year. Just went to a park dedication for her last weekend, spoke for around 450 people, no big wigs there though. Email me if you get this.

I just learned of Chucks death this morning and was very sad. Chuck and his brother Rick were playmates of mine in grade school and we would spend much time on their porch in the summer reading the great comic book collection that the Sabin family had collected. His father had the neatest train collection that I think I had ever seen and I spent time as a cub scout in their basement building train models. I cherish those memories and am sorry that his life was taken by this senseless act.

I worked with Chuck from 1984 until 1995. I remember him as one of the good guys in the Defense Intelligence Agency. I was shocked when my neighbor and former co-worker told me that Chuck was lost. I work for Arlington Public Schools, and my school is less than a mile from the crash site at the Pentagon. I thought it was bad enough when we had parents coming to pick up their children and telling me that they had witnessed the American Airlines plane crashing into the building. Little did I know that I would lose 7 former co-workers that day.
