I think of you often Shipmate. I have fond memories of serving on the Happy Harry with you as the DCA and me alongside as the MPA. You served with great distinction and were taken from all who care and love you... way too soon. Z spoke about you at our first HEY reunion. There wasn't a dry eye in the room. You are missed my friend. FWAFS.

Although i never met Robert, my family knows his loved ones. I was volunteering a year ago with a navy doc at a clinic for the uninsured. We talked about 9/11 and i said i knew of someone who passed at the pentagon. The doc said it wasnt robert schlegel was it? I said yes, did you know him? He said he had worked with his father at a hospital and was so sad to hear the news. He had only beautiful words to say about the Schlegel family.
Dawn, my dad told me how you took him to Roberts memorial bench at the pentagon and how much it meant to him. Thinking of you dawn at this time and always. God Bless.

I am working on a social studies project and have selected you to Reminiscence and remember 911. May you rest in peace.
Reminiscence
YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.
May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.
Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;
To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

Rob - You are still in our memories and hearts. I had the pleasure and honor this past Memorial Day Weekend of witnessing the graduation of the class of 2016 midshipmen at the US Naval Academy. During the week I met the midshipman who ran the USNA Foreign Affairs Conference (one of the seminars to which Schlegel Prize winners from Washington and Lee have traveled to further their understanding of international relations) and he expressed his thanks both for your service and sacrifice and for the tribute of sending civilians to the conference. He said civilian participation deepened and broadened the conversation resulting in a more enlightened discussion. May this tribute to your memory continue to contribute to the possibility of lasting peace and understanding around the world.

I remember the first time i saw him, i thought to myself, wait he was a Disbursing Officer, that is when i approached him and asked him "Sir do you have a twin" he smiled and said yes somewhat. I knew then our ship was in good hands.
CDR Schlegel like his older brother was an inspiration and influnence in my life. I enjoyed serving with him and he knew how to take care of his Sailors.

To family and friends of CDR Schlegel
Though it has now been several years since that day in 2001, through random web surfing I learned about CDR Shlegel's loss only recently.
I knew him as Officer Candidate Schlegel. We were in the same company at Navy OCS in Newport, 1986. He was in the senior platoon of Echo Company when I arrived, so there was always a degree of formality between us. I did not seen him after his commissioning (two months before mine), as our paths did not cross during my own 4+ years of active duty.
I remember him as a highly disciplined Officer Candidate, and I recall his enthusiasm for sports. He was also a helpful mentor to we junior Officer Candidates of Echo Company.
My best wishes to his family, and all of you who knew him better.

Commander Schlegal reported to the USS Spartanburg County LST-1192 around the same time that I did. He was an Ensign then. I was enlisted. Most officers are business only with the enlisted but Mr. Schlegal was down to earth. I stood many watches with him in the pilot house. He was the best and most memorable officer that I served with. I went to college with Rob in VA. He had a dynamic spirit and presence. If he was in the room, you noticed him. Rob was wicked smart, wicked funny, and was wild about Ozzy Osbourne….young Ozzy; not the sad reality show character. He also LOVED his future wife Dawn; she was his high school sweetheart and girlfriend throughout Rob’s college experience. I remember one late-night bull session in the dorm when Rob told me the story of how they met. Dawn had moved to Gray Maine as a high school student. She and Rob became acquainted as both were in the band. She was beautiful and sent shockwaves through the halls of the school - every guy wanted to date her. I remember as if it were yesterday, Rob shaking his head as he related the story, looking me in the eye and saying, “she picked me….I still can’t believe it but she picked me.”

To All of Robbie's family,
My fondest memories of Robbie were when we were kids and his family would come to Pennsylvania to visit his grandmother. His father is my cousin and since my sister and I were very close to Robbie's age, we had loads of fun playing in my parents backyard for hours. I wish I would have kept in touch with him as we grew up, but unfortunately, I didn't.
The news of his death really made me realize that we have to make the best of everyday because you never know when the creator will decide it's your time.
My prayers and thoughts are with his wife and family always.

I have selected Cmr. Schlegel to honor with a quilt square. The quilt will have one square for every person lost on September 11th. I selected him because I am a "navy brat", born in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. My dad was career Navy, loved the Navy and I grew up on Naval bases with a respect and reverence for those who dedicate their lives to our country. With every stitch I will remember and appreciate his sacrifice. God's peace be with friends and family.

Dear friends and family of CMDR. Robert Schlegel,
I am so sorry for your loss. I can not even begin to understand how painful it must be to lose a loved one that way. It was senseless and cowardly.
I recently received a mercy band (bracelet), which stands for bearing another's name daily, which has CMDR. Schlegel name engraved on it. As I wear this tribute to all that lost their lives on Sept 11, I will do my best to honor the courage and dedication that Robert showed.Also to appreciate each day!

May Robert's enjoyment for hockey, his courage, life and love live on in all who love him. The picture you have shared with us shows a warm friendly and caring man as his heart shows through his smile. We thank him for dedicating his life to help protect America. Such a devotion comes with a brave ,warm and caring heart. Our hearts cry with you in America's loss of a hero.

We see your sorrow-
and our hearts cry....
We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

are beside you.
We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I pray for those lost each day. I didn't know Commander Schlegel yet I was aware of him from two different people. The first is my son, CMS John K. Monaccio whose office I believe Capt. Schlegel moved into in July. John knew him by sight as many in the Pentagon know many. Also, I've been dealing with Greg Smith at e-source mortgage. I believe his family in Maine and the Schlegel's are friends. I know I have much to be thankful for that my son was spared. My understanding from him is that Capt. Schlegel was extremely well liked and admired by all who knew him.
My peace to you.
