To Captain Getzfred's family. I used to fly with LT. Getz, as I knew him, when we were in VP-6 together. This Memorial Day, I will be honoring his sacrifice in our church service. You will be prayed for!

It seems every year, 9/11 memorials begin earlier and earlier. I can only imagine where my Uncle Larry would be right now in the Naval Service and how accomplished his life may have been. My fondest memory of him was when I was very small (6 or 7 yrs. old) , I came home one day from riding my bike only to find my uncle had packed up his VW Bug and was saying his Goodbyes to my Mom & Dad. I must have thrown a temper tantrum because in a matter of minutes, my uncle had installed a bed in the back of his little bug and I was packed and going with him, didn't matter where just happy to be going! He drove up to Mount Rushmore and we then arrived at my grandmother's in Elgin, my parents arrived shortly thereafter. My uncle Larry was a fast learner, I don't remember ever saying Good-Bye to him or seeing him leave, recalling it now, I don't know if we ever said goodbye to each other ever again :). He always made sure we had Fun in our lives and always looked at the bright side of any situation. For Patricia, Larissa & Kristina my heart still goes out to you and I hope that if you ever return to Elgin, you will look us up. Take Care

I served with Larry in Aviation Officer Candidate (AOCS) School in Pensacola, Florida. We came back to our dorm rooms from the mile swim, part of our Survival Training, which we all had to complete to continue in the program. We opened mail, unpacked and carefully folded laundry, studied a little bit and went to dinner. An hour later, in walks Larry Getzfred, a Nebraska guy who could not even swim, having just completed the swim by himself, alone and exhausted using only the simple survival backstroke they had taught us. Larry had enlisted in the Navy when I was in 9th grade. He had already served on a P-3 Orion. He used his spare time to get a Math degree. His squadron commander was so impressed with Larry, he wanted Larry as his NFO (second officer) once he had earned his wings. I always so admired Larry's impressive, yet understated drive and grit and intelligence, which all served him well during his impressive Navy career. My condolences to all who knew and loved Larry. Captain Getzfred was my Commanding Officer when I was in VP-40. I was onboard the USS Carl Vinson during 9/11 attached to an F/A-18 squadron. I retired from the Navy in 2005 after 20 years of service. Every year I pause to remember those on that day and to say a prayer for Capt. Getzfred and his family. I will never forget and will always remember.

I've noticed that Captain Lawrence was the only person from Nebraska to suffer such a tragedy.

My heart goes out to all of you. No matter who you are.

I think about Getz often, he was one of my best friends in the Navy. We served together in VP-6 and in VP-31. I am a school teacher now and his name and Jack Punches name are on my chalkboard. God bless Pat and the girls. CDR Larry Berberich USN (ret) 9/11/06

On this 1 year anniversary, I am writing in remeberance of Capt. Getzfred. The company I work for, Applied Materials, asked each of its employees to wear a wrist band with the name of one of those lost in the tragedy of 9/11. The name I wear today is that of the captain and I wanted to share with his friends and family my thoughts and prayers. Though I did not personally know him, I share in your pain at the loss of a loved one and pray that at this time you can begin to see just how he touched the lives of those around him.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
