Steve was everything that is great about this country. A man of faith, loved his family, a leader of men who could be relied on to raise the game of all those associated with him.
Those of us who knew him will forever be affected, he lived a great life of service that showed us all what's possible.

You are still remembered and shared with my students. A former soldier under your command. How the time passes yet the day lives on. You were such a great commander and I know you are an angel over many soldiers and loved ones still today. You lived with kindness and courage and an astute vision of moral values. Prayers and blessings are wished to your family and children. This war continues and affects all of us in so many ways. May each of us continue to live with the memory of great sacrifices and continue to work towards a world that is better.
Your former soldier,
Shannon Mason

Steve, you passed on a legacy way too soon!
But your legacy is one of honor, duty, and service with an uncompromising love for God & country.
Today, 9.11.11 you would have been honored by the Open Baptism hosted at 12Stone Church. Entire families, great-grandsons, mothers, students, fathers, executives and unemployed accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and were baptized. I can't think of a better to honor you and all that you represent.
You are loved and missed! I look forward to that great reunion where I can introduce you to my wonderful Emily and our son Noah. RIP

It is hard to believe it has been a decade since Steve lost his life while saving others. I had the honor of being a classmate of Steve's in high school. He was always friendly and kind. As the 30th class reunion approaches, I know you will be in the hearts and on the minds of many of us. Rest in Peace.

Steve, it seems like only yesterday, yet it also seems like a lifetime ago. Like all the others that day, you did not deserve this fate. You had been all over the world! Your mom thought you were safe... I know you are in a better place than this conflicted world, and for that, I am glad. For your family I raise up prayers they have a sense of peace on this 10th anniversary. God bless you, Steve and God bless this nation!

He had a great sense of humor and was a very dedicated individual. It was an honor to have served under him. To his family a prayer for you for your loss. I will always remember him. MAJ Long and Family,
I just watched the PBS special about one of your fellow officers there in the Pentagon. You and your family have been on my mind throughout the year. I knew you for only a short time when I was a brand new 2LT in the 407th S&T BN, 82d ABN DIV, and you were a senior 1LT, but your presence made an impact on me that will last for a lifetime.
There is not a day that goes by that I think of you and pray for you and your family.
God Bless,

RANGER CREED
Recognizing that I volunteered as a Ranger, fully knowing the hazards of my chosen profession, I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit de corps of the Rangers.
Acknowledging the fact that a Ranger is a more elite soldier who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by land, sea, or air, I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to move further, faster, and fight harder than any other soldier.
Never shall I fail my comrades I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong, and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be, one hundred percent and then some.
Gallantly will I show the world that I am a specially selected and well trained soldier. My courtesy to superior officers, neatness of dress, and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow.
Energetically will I meet the enemies of my country. I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender is not a Ranger word. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrass my country.
Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger objective and complete the mission, though I be the lone survivor.

I only got to meet Steve a few times, but I will always remember his warm smile and contagious laugh. When I did get to be around him most of the time was spent visiting with his wife Tina, a truly beautiful "Southern Belle". I have known his sister, Nancy, and his parents for a few years. They have allowed me to feel as though I am a part of their family, and for this I am truly thankful. Having already known Steve's family before meeting him, it is no surprise that he was the wonderful, selfless person that he was. I would like to ask anyone who reads this to say a prayer to give Steve's family strength during this difficult time and the times yet to come.

PRAYER FOR STEVE AND FAMILY:
Father of all mercies, we remember MAJ Steve Long, soldier, husband, father and a dear friend of many. In living, he instilled the values that he cherished: service, dedication and integrity. Even in mourning, we remeber his days among us, and we thank You for his calling and his life. Comfort, Father, those to whom he was special: His family, his fellow soldiers and the acuaintances whom he touched. Grant that we understand that even in death his prayers and his goodness remain with us. Let us recall him as the model of Your love oh God. Amen

America Cries
We see your sorrow-
and our hearts cry....
We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-
-the American people-
are beside you.
We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
