Gertrude Alagero Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 19, 2001.
The Luckiest in the World
She always had time for a friendly chat with the corner newsdealer and the counterman at the deli, and she was sometimes forgetful about paying parking tickets and bills. But Gertrude Alagero, nicknamed Trudi, was also a determined competitor. After she taught her fiancé, Peter B. Walther, to snowboard, she never let him beat her when they raced down Okemo Mountain in Vermont.

Ms. Alagero, a senior vice president at Marsh Private Client Services, a division of Marsh & McLennan, and Mr. Walther, who was her supervisor before they began dating in 1998, had planned to marry in Boston on Jan. 5.

A few days before the terrorist attack, Mr. Walther said, she pressed her fingers to his mouth while they were walking toward the subway from their Upper West Side apartment.

"Shhh," she said, "I need to tell you something: I am the luckiest woman in the world."

On Sept. 7, the day that Ms. Alagero turned 37, she gave Mr. Walther a Nikon camera so he could become adept at using it before their honeymoon in Africa. He snapped two rolls of pictures, mostly of her.

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on October 19, 2001.

September 11, 2020

I was only 6 years old when Trudi passed away. I loved her very much; to this day she was the kindest soul I have ever come across. I have one vivid memory of her that I hold onto; she was at my house growing up, we were picking out flower girl dresses for me to wear at her and my uncle's wedding. I was sitting on her lap at the kitchen table and she was helping me put on these clip on earrings. I was so content and felt so beautiful after she put these on. I have not idea where these earrings are to do this day but all I do know is that I miss her dearly and know that we would have been best of friends in my adulthood. I hope she knows this.

It is obvious that the essence of Trudi's spirit could not be extinguished on 9/11. Each time her memory inspires one of us to do an act of love or kindness, her life continues to shine. This is Trudi's legacy.

I want the family to know the Trudi is reaching out from the heavens. Yesterday as I was walking Deer Island in Winthrop, the town of her birth, I stopped to do something I've never done before. You see, my shoelace needed tying and it is my normal habit to bend down on the ground and do it. But yesterday, 9/11, for some reason I propped my shoe on a bench, Trudi's memorial bench. I've never read the inscription on this bench and I did not know Trudi, but I feel like I do now. I feel like she called me over to visit her. I just want to share this with the utmost respect with those that love her and miss her. She's still here.

Hi Trudi,
After making a donation to the Two Towers Orphan Fund, I received the following bracelet: "Gertrude M Alagero - WTC". I was not aware of these bracelets but am so glad that I received one. Many people have asked me what it is and now I can tell them what an incredible person you were and your amazing impact on this world. I want to thank all of your family and friends that have used this website to remember your life and share stories of their best memories with you. I wear the bracelet every day and think of you often. May you continue to look down upon your loves ones left on this Earth. Rest in Peace, Trudi; you will never be forgotten.

My heart broke today when my husband and I were watching the names of the victims being read off today on the 9/11 special and Trudi's name showed up. I had no idea. Trudi was my first "work friend" at Tucker Anthony in 1986. I remember being dazzled by her personality and fabulous wardrobe and was even more surprised that this thin beautiful gal packed herself two huge sandwiches each day for lunch. We became such good friends that Trudi came on a trip with my family to Germany. Her luggage was lost for days, but she made the best of it. Andy my sister and I remember that neither one of could lend her our clothes because we were solid size 6's and they just hung off her body. yet each day she managed to look dazzling. I also remember how much she loved her family, especially her brothers. My sincerest condolences to Trudi's family.

September 11, 2011

May you rest in peace. I remember you from school, such a nice person, always offered a sincere smile.I realize it is ten years gone by, however I have found thoughts of you today on 9/11/2011.May god be with you and your family

I am signing this because shortly after 9/11 I had heard about metal bracelets that you could get with someone's name on it--someone who was killed during the attacks. I was randomly send a bracelet and the name on the bracelet was hers. So it's nice to get to know a little bit about her. I see that I'm now the same age she was when she died. So I will always remember her, even though I never knew her.

September 17, 2008

Although I never had the privilege of knowing Ms. Alagero, a good friend of mine from New England shared her memories of Trudi with me. From my friend's words and from what I have read about Trudi, I have come to understand what a remarkable woman she truly was. When I look at her photograph I see a woman who had class, dignity, sincerity, warmth, generosity and kindness.
We as the human race cannot afford to lose quality people like Trudi. For this exact reason we must not allow terrorism to exist in our world. It is my hope fond memories of Trudi will inspire each of us to make great efforts to stop terrorism, love each other more, and to live lives which transcend our own.
May the Lord bless the memory of this precious woman.

With my respect and hope,

Gretchen Magner

Gertrude (Trudi) Alagero was a beautiful woman inside and out.
Trudi has been a family friend for my entire life and even though I met her maybe 3-4 times I still remember those visits vividly.
God bless you Trudi and thanks for making the time on the Cape so much fun with all the toys you bought for us kids!

I had worked on a summer internship for Rep. Steve Angelo's office along with Trudi. We both lived in Saugus at the time and would work in his office in the Town Hall on Fridays and commute into Boston on the other days. She was just so full of grace and laughter. I had never met anyone like her before and have not since. She has left quite the impression on my heart and mind, especially as I clearly remember her from all those years ago. My deepest condolences to her family and all those who knew her.

Trudi was such a beautiful and intelligent person, my prayers go out to the Alagero family and all of Trudi's friends. What a special person she was and she touched so many lives. I knew her at PC and she befriended me even though I was an underclassman. I will always remember her as I'm sure everyone else will that she knew her as the special person she was.

January 16, 2007

I'm late with this, I know. After 9/11, I found a place that had metal bracelets with the name of a person on them, and her name is on mine. I didn't know her, but I'm looking at this bracelet right now, sitting on my desk around a little statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. All that she and all those other people did was go to work that morning...

My prayers go out to her family and friends and those who knew her as more than a name engraved on a metal bracelet. I am very sorry for your loss. I didn't even know what she looked like until now.

I'll always keep this bracelet here where I can see it.

May she and all the others who died that day rest in peace and know that they will never be forgotten.

I graduated from Saugus High with Trudi. The first thing that pops into my head when I think of her is that smile and how easy it was to make her laugh. She was always positive, upbeat and working on ten things at once (and got them all done, too!)

I was at our 20th High School Reunion in August 2002, when I found out that Trudi had died in the towers. It broke my heart.

I was still living and working in Massachusetts in 2002. We gathered around a tv and watched the one year memorial service. Mayor Giuliani was the first to read from the alphabetical list of names. When he read Trudi's name, I just couldn't take it and had to leave the building. I no longer work on September 11, and choose to spend the day as a time of reflection and prayer.

Anyone who knew Trudi has been given a gift for life.

May God continue to bless Trudi and her loved ones.

You know, this is really hard for me to even read about such a loss. But it must be sooo much harder for her family. I was up feeding my new baby girl that night. I had spend 20 weeks in hospital and most of my pregnancy on my back just to keep her. It made me ask myself had i gone through all I had to have her to bring her into a world like this. To this day I look to the sky at every plane I hear as does my baby Georgia. The fear is still there when we hear a plane that sounds a little too low. I wish we were all pre 9/11 living in our fairy coloured world

I ride by Trudi's family home in Saugus every day going to work in Boston; I think about her every time I drive by and I feel terribly sad. What a lovely person! Although I did not really know her - I remember seeing her often in E. Saugus; she was an adorable little girl with cute older brothers. (One of my brothers (Rich or Stephen) went to school with Paul.) My whole family (from Saugus)- like so, so many people, were very saddened about the Alagero family's terrible loss. Our town has lost a number of wonderful young ladies over the years in tragic ways; I will include Trudi in my prayers - particularly during the Holiday times, when I think of 3 other incredible young women from Saugus whose lives God chose too early to call to him - Lisa Polese, Gretchen Ludwig, and Suzanne Rossetti. I hope the wonderful memories of Trudi, and offers of support and condolences, are comforting to Trudi's close friends and loved ones. I just came across the NYTimes tribute and wanted to offer my condolences and prayers.

Today is the first day that I was honestly able to smile and laugh to myself when thinking of Trudi. Although the pain and sadness will never leave - it was as if Trudi shared the cab ride with me to the office today!

Halfway up Park Avenue to my new office - I realized that I had closed the cab door on my coat.As I got out of the cab in front of my building and surveyed the damage - I recalled a cab ride that Trudi and I shared after a fantastic night of drinking and dancing about 8 years ago. I had done the very same thing and totally ruined a new topcoat. Trudi laughed at the top of her lungs and declared that she'd take me to Saks the next day and help me pick out a new coat.

The next day Trudi and I went to Saks and picked out a fantastic coat - in fact - the very coat that I wore to the office today!

Trudi - I'm going to Saks tomorrow to buy another - and I'll be listening for your hints!

I'll remember all of the fantastic time for the rest of my life. Peace.

Trudi's soft, warm and friendly smile must be a reflection of the love in her heart. Thank you for sharing a part of her life with us. We are deeply sorry for you loss of Trudi. We see your sorrow-

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

My brother, Danny, and I were heartbroken to learn of your loss of Trudi. We remember her as a really fun little kid...and she must have grown into an extraordinary woman.

My heart is truly broken for you and for all of the people lost at WTC. (My husband worked on the 83rd floor of Building One and lost 13 wonderful employees and friends.)

You are all in our prayers.
