Richard Cudina Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 19, 2001.
Richard Cudina, 46, was a broker at Cantor Fitzgerald, but his heart was far from the buttoned-down world of Wall Street.

As a young man, he was a daredevil on the ski slopes of northern New Jersey, barreling off the trail to glide between trees and seeking out boulders from which to launch himself skyward. When he graduated from college, he became a cruise ship director and bummed around ski resorts in Colorado and Switzerland. His idea of fun as a grownup was to pilot helicopters around Manhattan.

A month before he died, Cudina, a Jimmy Buffett disciple, told his friends and family how he wanted to be remembered.

"He wanted us to smoke cigars, drink margaritas and pina coladas, and he'd pick up the tab," said his brother, Chris. "He wanted his remains scattered over the ocean someplace beautiful."

The family planned to gather in New Jersey this weekend to remember Cudina. It may not be the tropics, but his brother is planning his own small tribute. He'll be wearing a Hawaiian shirt.

Richard Cudina, kept everyone laughing

Richard Joseph Cudina was looking forward to an annual golf trip last Sunday.

A longtime bond broker at many prestigious Wall Street firms, Mr. Cudina, 46, was known to family and friends as the person who always stayed in touch, from impulsive phone calls to more elaborate get-togethers like the golf excursion.

A year ago, Mr. Cudina took a job at Cantor Fitzgerald. He was at work Sept. 11 when a terrorist attack destroyed the World Trade Center, where his office was located.

"He was the brother in a high- powered, cut-throat, money-making career who would call his family just to say, 'I'm thinking of you and I love you,' " his wife, Georgia, and brothers, William, Marcus and Christopher, said in a statement.

Mr. Cudina faced many challenges in his life, including hip replacement surgeries that took away one of his avid pursuits, skiing. But he remained "a bit of an adventurer," according to his family, even obtaining a commercial helicopter license.

In more than 20 years on Wall Street, Mr. Cudina also worked for companies such as Garban Corporates, Chapdelaine Corp. and Lasser Marshall Inc. Prior to his career as a bond broker, Mr. Cudina worked as a cruise director for the Bramson Entertainment Agency.

A longtime resident of Secaucus, Mr. Cudina married Georgia Sedelmeyer in July 1996. Four years ago, looking for a more rural setting, they bought a house in Glen Gardner.

For Mr. Cudina, that meant waking early for a 60-mile commute, but he was willing to make the trek.

"No one could spend an afternoon, an hour or even a few minutes with him without laughing," according to the family statement. "His colleagues, friends and family now are challenged to hold on to his stories, his memories and rekindle his laughter."

Visiting hours will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at McCorry Brothers Funeral Home, 780 Anderson Ave., Cliffside Park.

Services will be at 7:45 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. A 9 a.m. funeral Mass will follow at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Fairview.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Red Cross New York Relief Fund, P.O. Box 97089, Washington, D.C. 20013, or the Salvation Army, P.O. Box C635, West Nyack, N.Y. 10994-1739.

Very sorry for your loss. I didn't know Richard, but he seemed to be a very nice fella, going by the comments on here. I just visited NYC for the first time, and I ended up taking a couple of pictures at ground zero. Out of curiosity I ended up researching the names on the memorial. I've uploaded the photograph below. My sincere apologies if I'm opening old wounds.

Dear Rich,

I have a vivid memory of you standing in my kitchen talking to my Mom and Dad. You were with my brother Joe at Burger King on Route 46. A fight broke out and you did not join in. Joe was upset because he was on his own. You told my parents that you could not fight because "what if something bad happened, who would take care of my mother." I hope someone is taking care of your family today. God bless you

Dear Cudina Family-

On this the 3rd Anniversary, we just wanted you to know that we have Richie in our thoughts and prayers, not just today but always.

We also wanted you to know that in 2001, we did get that Christmas ornament put on the Remembrance Tree for him at the WTC site, as we hung it on the tree ourselves.

Richie was a great friend to all who knew him and he will NEVER be

forgotten.

Cudina,

Over a year has passed and I still think of you often for some reason. I truely beleive it is because of all the laughs and good times we had in the office or on the golf course. I assume you and McGuinn are hanging out and keeping a close eye on all of us that you left behind.

Richard lived life to the fullest and he was right.

I will always remember his lovely smile.

He made me laugh so many times. He was a great entertainer.

He was full of energy and loved speed.

He loved loud music in his room: his brothers would shout:: “turn it down!”

I will always remember his rattling red car. You could not miss him and you knew he was home when he parked his car on the driveway!

I also knew when he was around: I still can hear his very own noise:

“ hum, hum” he used to make.

He had a brilliant spirit and he had a special way of caring about people.

He lived to a full at “high speed”.

I wish you and your family to find the strength to live life with happiness as he always did.

I want you to know that Richard will be always remembered and will be in my prayers for ever.

I attended High School with Richie in Cliffside Park. I had just moved from Europe and Richie befriended and helped me adjust to my new home. We were almost next door neighbors in Fairview. We bacame good friends and skiing buddies, and we cruised around in his orange Renault talking about his trips to England.

He graduated a year earlier than I and we lost contact. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his death. We were once again almost neighbors but never connected again. I am so sorry.

My heart goes out to all his family and other friends. I will never forget him.

I, like many, knew several people who were taken from us prematurely on Sept. 11th. It wasn’t until several months afterwards though that I heard about Richie. My family lived on the block on Oakwood Avenue with the Cudinas and having left the neighborhood and lost track of people, this was a shock.

Having now read about what he’d done in the years since I last saw him I was moved. Growing up I was closer in age to his brother Chris, but I always remembered Richie as a very friendly, thoughtful guy. I see now that he never really changed except to extend himself to others to an even greater level.

One of my favorite childhood Christmas memories involved Richie. I’m not sure how old I was at the time, maybe 5, but it was Christmas Eve and my parents had arranged for a friend of my father’s to come over dressed as Santa and personally deliver me a present. Of course I was thrilled with the whole visit.

Maybe a half an hour after Santa left, our doorbell rang again. We answered it only to find it was another Santa Claus! I found out later that it was Richie. While my parents did some quick explaining I think there are few children that age that would push their luck and start interrogating any Santa Claus that came bearing gifts. I certainly didn’t.

Richie had done this on his own and my parents were as surprised as I was. Over the years, and especially since finding Richie was lost on 9/11, I find myself wondering how many other children’s nights he’d made that evening.

One of my last recollections of Richie was when he was on his way out one morning and saw me having car trouble. He stopped, tried to help me get the car moving, and when we were unable to, he offered to take me to work.

I see now that in a way he went on to live his life almost as if everyday were Christmas Eve for those he shared the world

I remember Richard from the days back in the 1970's when I was a priest at St. John's in Fairview, NJ. I remember him just as so many of you have described him in this guestbook.

It's great to hear that he lived such a full and happy life. I especially liked hearing the part about the helicopters. But I bet he never survived falling off a motorcycle! (Private joke for Chris)

My heartfelt sympathy to Chris and Mary.

Were you at Ground Zero today?

Did you help move the rubble that still stands in the way?

Did you smell the acrid air from which you cannot seem to hide?

Did you hear the deafening silence as they found another body there inside?

Were you at Ground Zero today?

Did you bring drinks to the rescuers who come back every day?

Did you leave your job to console the firefighters who can’t explain

why so many comrades had to be slain?

No, you were not there, but how did you know

how bad the odor is or how long the death toll goes?

You must have been there to be so kind to us all.

You had to see the devastation to get such a call.

Yes, you were at Ground Zero today.

You were there when you wrote me the words you just couldn’t say.

You were there when you cooked a meal for my home.

Or when you just listened to me cry on the phone.

Yes, you were at Ground Zero today.

You were there as you helped me pick the prayers we would say.

You were there as you sang at the Holy Mass.

You were there as we joked at his most lively repast.

Yes, you were at Ground Zero today,

when you did my work so I could stay home another day.

Or when you came over to help clean up the mess

And never asked why we were leaving the rest.

Yes, you were at Ground Zero today.

When you made a donation, the third one that day.

When you gave us a discount or gave it to us for free

because somehow you shared the pain of my whole family.

And, you were at Ground Zero today.

When you listened to what my child had to say.

And when you made any child smile you lifted the load.

As surely as the iron is being lifted from the road.

I think Ground Zero is not a certain place.

I think it is all around us, it takes up much more space.

For it didn’t just fill up city blocks all around.

It filled up our hearts and it made our hearts pound.

We all stopped and looked about at what has been done.

We’re all crying for ourselves and we’re crying for someone.

And we shall overcome, overcome we must do.

But I can’t do it alone and neither can you.

Together we were at Ground Zero today.

And together we’re moving what stands in the way.

Together we’ll help the helpers and console those who remain.

And together we will ask God to help with the pain.

We all cannot be at that one sacred spot.

But when we care for each other we are doing a lot.

So, I’ll see you on the journey as we go

Back to the place we call Ground Zero.

He touched so many lives that I wish we all could lead such a full rewarding life as he did.
