Antoinette Sherman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 19, 2001.
There was nothing Antionette "Toni" Sherman loved more than ending her day with an impromptu fishing trip. After a long day crunching numbers in the Pentagon, Sherman would pick up her foster son and fishing gear and head to her favorite spot. At 35, Sherman filled her life with the things she loved - island cruises, family reunions, the little boy she planned to adopt, her dogs Oreo and Rex, trips to Florida, bowling leagues and Pokeno tournaments. "She loved children. She was always carting other people's kids around," said her mom, Eloise Clarke, who lived about 10 miles from her daughter's home in suburban Maryland. "That's what gave her the incentive to become a foster mom." A federal employee since 1983, Sherman was working as an Army budget analyst when Flight 77 hit the Pentagon. She was one of the first victims to be airlifted to a hospital. She died from her injuries at Washington Hospital Center's burn unit last week.

Toni was my cousin, but more like a big sister. She was the oldest child of our generation. She was loved by everyone her family. She is so missed because she would have become the matriarch that my family needs so much today. She was the glue for many of our relationships. I love and miss you very much Toni.

To the Family and Friends of Antoinette; I watched the Nova program tonite on television. I was so moved and filled with sorrow at your loss and the losses of all the families of those killed on 9/11.
Antoinette in effect gave her life for all of us and I am certain she is so terribly missed.
Very little any of us can say can change the pain, we can only offer our condolences and share the sorrow.
Our sincerest hopes for the well being of her family and all of those similarly impacted by the horrible events that day.

Neither you nor your family know me, but I have a namesake of yours. He was part of the DHS canine bomb detection program. He did not meet the standards to become a working dog so I adopted my "little boy" from the program. He was 8 months old before I got to bring him home. He will turn 10 this November. I have always wondered about who he was named after and stumbled across this posting today. I think you and my Sherman would have gotten along very, very well. I pray your family is healing from the terrific loss of you...

Yesterday, Sunday, 11 September 2011, I attended my Dad's church (also the church I grew up in) in Emmitsburg, MD. Part of the service involved praying for the family and friends of the name given to me as I entered church. I am honored to pray for Toni's family members, friends, and co-workers, who, most likely, miss her daily and continue to heal from the tradgedy of her loss. May each breathe bring you a step closer to Jesus, Who understands your every hurt and need. May your mind be flooded with His peace and with sweet memories of your beloved Toni.

Words cannot express my grief that i feel on a daily basis. I remember when we first met. It was on Howard University's campus. Your smile & personality was one in a million. Then you introduced me to your family. I felt accepted immediately. The trips, outings, & dinners will forever be in my heart. Your family took in this COUNTRY GIRL as your own. I will be forever grateful. You will forever be a friend, confidant,& pal. Thanks to your parents for raising such a beautiful person who loved others as much as she loved herself. Antoinette, You were my godmother and I miiss you. If I could take back this horrific day I would. You made me smile whenever I was down, you lifted me and now that you are gone I daydream of us going shopping and just having fun together. I miss you so much. Even though I have never really met you, my mom always tells me stories about how close you and my mother were. It is hard to live with this pain, but I have to let it go. This is my prayer that you are safe in God's hands and that you are in a better place. I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please accept my condolences for the loss of your loved one. Although some time has passed. To some it can seem like just a day. Please know that you are not alone. God knows how you feel and he will help you. He will not leave those who are broken at heart. Psalms 34:18 reads: The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

I was a neighbor in Forest Heights. I lived cross the street from Toni. She was always very pleasant. We met through Strayer University and quickly realized we were neighbors. Toni and I always talked about positive things, such as school and children. I tried to encourage her to go back and finish her Bachelor's degree after she completed her AA. She was a lovely young woman and everytime I pass her old house, I think about her.

Tragically Ms. Sherman and I met briefly while we had just been rescued from the Pentagon. We were sitting on the grass and I turned around and there my eyes met Antoinette. I looked at her and asked was she going to be alright. I was told to turn around and that she would be ok. That's the last time I saw her. On Monday, I was released from the Washington Hospital Center; the same day God called her to his throne. I was very devistated because we had come in contact for that brief moment and now she was gone. My mom knows Ms. Sherman because she works for Child and Family Services, which was a sad day for the them because then knew Antionette along with me getting injured was a blow to all the workers there. Although I did know her personally, she will always be in my thoughts & prayers.

Toni,

Gone But Never Forgotten.

This has been an awful hard struggle for me to except. 365 days out of the year, I think about you and the direction in which your life would be heading (I'm sure doing something adventurous). When I last saw you in the hospital, Stella and I planned how we were going to do two things (1). be there for you and help you get on your feet, no matter how long it took. When it turned out that you were not going to pull through, our second plan was to (2). watch over your mom and dad, which we have stuck to that plan. We have adopted them as our second parents and we work through this thing together. For every life you've touched, this tradgey has changed us in one way or another.

I miss you more than these words could ever express. "If only I could turn back the hands of time."

Toni and I went to LaReine High School together. I remember her as being funny but completely level headed. When I saw a recent photograph of her I noticed that her smile hadn't changed. I'm sorry that she died so young.

Antoinette,

It took a year for me to even look at the pictures of the victims at the Pentagon. I tried calling immediately after the attacks. I knew in my heart when I didn't hear from you that something was wrong. I called my parents and they didn't hear from you. When I called your house and found out that your phone was disconnected I knew the worse had happened. But I still wouldn't go to the list of victims. On the anniversary when me and my husband and your God-daughter Brianna scrolled down the list. I saw Cortez's name. When I went further I saw Antoinette's picture. I fell back and began to cry. I had just pulled out a picture of you and vincent over looking the mountains. Brianna said she is gone momma. I said yeah. If I could I would apologize for not granting your wish to see Brianna in the summer of 2001. Again, I let time pass by without a thought that you would always be there. One thing I will say that working with you at the Pentagon, living with you, and knowing you has touched me in a way that has been life changing. We had many ups and downs but the pros out wayed the bad. Mr. & Mrs. Clarke if you read this I say this to you. Antoinette changed my life. I could look at her life and learn how to be a survivor. God Bless you all.

I just found out that Antoinette was snatched from her life and I am devastated. We worked together at Drug Emporium for a couple of years and remained friends until I moved away. She was the sweetest, funniest person I had ever met. We had such good times together. To her family I say I am so sorry for your loss and to God I say take care of her she will keep you smiling!!!!!

Toni sounds like she was a woman who was a great example for those around her--a strong, kind, wonderful woman. I can tell just by reading the things about her I've read here. My heart goes out to her family and friends. May peace console your spirit in this time of mourning, and may her legacy live on, as I am sure your memories of her will live on in your hearts.

As a nation mourns the one-year anniversary of these devastating attacks that took your life and thousands of others, I'm grateful for the memories we shared so long ago. I am forever changed. It's hard Antoinette, knowing your presence, your smile, your laughter will never be seen or heard of again in this life. Yet, in my heart, that's all I have left. You were a pillar to lean on; a giver and a privilege to know. You were and will always be an inspiration to me both personally and professionally. I miss you Antoinette and will remember you as long as I live. Thank you for all you gave me. YOU FOREVER LIVE ON IN MY HEART!!

I am honored to wear the mercy band with Antoinette's name on it. I have been wearing it since Christmas

There have been many times that I look at it and think, she will never do this, and her band is a constant reminder of how grateful I am for my life. Just the thought of her has forever changed my life, touched my life in a way I can not explain. Today was the first time I saw her picture and she is even more lovely than I imagined. My heartfelt prayers go to her family and friends; I cannot imagine how sad they must feel. I will bear her name daily with much gratitude and hope. Thank you,Trish Brennan

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Toni,

I remembered Toni from several accounting classes and can recall her kindness and her eagerness to finish those classes. I was truly devastated when I saw her picture in the paper. To her family I want to leave this scripture for encouragement and comfort. At Rev. 20:4, it states that" he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."
