Christopher Faughnan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 21, 2001.
Love Behind the Wheel
It was Saturday morning, and Cathy Faughnan was standing in the chilling wind beside a soccer field rooting for Juliet, her second child. Just a few weeks earlier, that had been the job of her husband, Christopher Faughnan.

They met as undergraduates at the University of Colorado, where he worked as a security guard and she as a lifeguard. One day, she held up a piece of paper to him that said, "Cute Butt."

He became a perfect dad. When Mr. Faughnan got home every weekday at 6:30 p.m. from his job as a trader at Cantor Fitzgerald, "he would get the kids all crazy," Mrs. Faughnan said.

"They would jump around him, laughing and kissing him."

He bought a minivan, and ferried the three children to art classes, gymnastic practice, ballet lessons and soccer games.

The children are Siena, 7, Juliet, 5, and Liam, 3. One night, Liam asked his mother why Daddy could not come back, but a few days later, he told her that his father was a hero. "I don't know where he got that," Mrs. Faughnan said. "And he told me: 'Mommy, I will take care of you. Daddy doesn't want you to be sad.' "

Today would have been Mr. Faughnan's 38th birthday. After the trick-or-treating tonight, Mrs. Faughnan will ask the children to write their dad a message on a piece of paper, tie it to a balloon and let it fly.

Visited the NYC 9/11 memorial four years ago today with my wife and was drawn to Christopher's name though I didn't know him. Every year since our visit I remember Chris on this solemn day. Thank you to all who shared their memories on this page; I understand now why I was drawn to his name. We pray that you have been able to find rest in the Peace that passes all understanding and that you live in the hope of a reunion someday.

I am visiting from Cincinnati and stopped at Christopher's name (which is also my last name). What a great life and God bless your family.

September 19, 2015

My memory of Chris is vivid, even though it's based on what happened at least 30 years ago. I was teaching Writing at the University of Colorado, Boulder, when a student with an unusual last name (Faughnan) joined the class. It must have been around 1983, give or take a year or two. Chris struck me as a strong personality, engaged in class, and a natural leader. Unfortunately he had to drop the class after a week or two because of a scheduling conflict. When he announced that in class, the students gave a collective groan, which I never forgot. They had really warmed to his presence and were sorry to see him go!

It is sad that the most impressive, talented people are often taken first. It's a tribute to Chris's dynamic personality that my brief encounter with him left such a lasting impression. A year or two back I saw in the newspaper that Chris's family were still honoring his memory on the anniversary of 9/11, which has prompted me to write this.

Sincerely, Joan L. Hall ([email protected])

Cathy - I don't know if you'll remember me but I was Janine Luppino's neice and friends with your sister Julie in middle school. I think of you and your family every year on the anniversary of 9/11. After 13 years, I'm sure life is different and everyone has moved on with their lives but I just wanted you to know that I am saying a prayer for your Chris and your whole family. Hope you're doing well.

Nice is not a big enough word to describe Chris, but when I think of him, it's always the word that comes to mind. He is and was, one of the nicest people I have ever known. My memories of him always make me smile.

Dear Cathy & family,

My deepest condolences to you and your children. We are distant cousins from the Bronx and I am sure we met at the last reunion held in upstate NY. You sound like a very strong person and I pray that God will always give you and your beautiful children strength. My son is named Christopher also and he is a special person like your Christopher. God Bless.

Cathy, Siena, Juliet & Liam-

I found out about Chris a year ago when I worked for your brother-in-law, Mike Sleevi, in Colorado. I want you to know that even though I never met you or Chris, I have thought of you and your children every day of the 365 days that have passed. I still have the thank-you card that you sent me with your family picture on the front...I keep it to constantly remind me of what's important. I hope living in Colorado near Chris and Ellen's family has been comforting. I will keep all of you in my prayers.

Dear Faughnan Family,

I went to high school and a year at CU with Chris. We had some good times together. He was smart, tough, funny, and caring. Even back then I knew he would be successful and it doesn't suprise me one bit that he has left a true legacy. God bless you and take care.

Cathy, Siena, Juliet, and Liam,

The Park dedication today was just beautiful. On the surface it seems like something so simple, but in reality, it holds so much meaning and pays true homage to a man who was never afraid to dream and always reached for the stars. Chris certainly deserves to be remembered in this way. We miss Chris dearly and we'll miss you when you leave for CO, but know you always have a home at the Jersey shore! Much love to the four of you.

To the Faughnan family -

Dear Cathy, I remember when we had the beach house in Harvey Cedars. I had just met Jeff and remember thinking how wonderful you and Chris were together, how beautiful Siena was and how crazy I thought Chris was for taking off on a bike ride that was either 600 miles long or the entire day! I think of you often and hope and pray for you as well.

Stay beautiful, love Stacey

Cathy, Siena, Juliet, and Liam. I am deeply sorry for your loss. I am a distant cousin that has met Uncle Tommy (Chris's Father) numerous times. I was in the military for ten years and got out. Sept 11 caused me to rejoin. My heart truly bleeds for what happened. Let me say that our armed forces are here now and maybe we can prevent this kind of tragedy from happening again. God Bless you and the kids. If you ever need anything please email me [email protected] or phone 720-898-8898.

Dear Cathy and kids,

My cousin Christine just told me there was a Faughnan in the WTC tragedy and I found the list on the NY Times website. Our branch of the Faughnans live in New York and Florida, and we all send you our condolences. I hope now that a little time has passed that you are healing and learning to smile again.

Best wishes from a possibly very distant cousin!

Dear Mrs. Faughnan (Cathy)

I had read there was a Faughnan who was in the WTC on 9/11 but could not find any family members who knew anyone there. My son sent this to me this email address today and I feel compeled to write. I am very sorry for your loss, it sounds as you and Ed had a lot going for you. I hope you and your children are as well as possible and I will add Ed to my prayers. Good luck and God Bless.

What a cute love story. Thank you for sharing a part of your lives with us. Liam's statements were so heart touching. We are deeply sorry for your loss of Christopher. May his family values, his life and love live on in all who love him. May the sorrow in your hearts be lightened by warm memories of times you shared with Christopher. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Cathy-

I think you know how I felt and feel about Chris, you and your kids. My heart still aches for you and your families. My life was so greatly enriched by knowing Chris - he made me smile, laugh and even got me through a few tough times. I have known very few people in my life that I can call a true friend, but Chris was always there for me and he made everyone he met feel like they really mattered.

As I've said to you before, I feel sorry for all those people in the world that had not yet had a chance to meet Chris for they are the truly unlucky ones.

With much love, sympathy and support - Penny
