Charles Zion Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2001.
Family, Company and Golf
Charles A. Zion loved his job as executive vice president at Cantor Fitzgerald, and he loved golf. "It was hard to get him out of there," said his wife of 20 years, Carole. "When he started to play golf, I thought that was a good thing for him, because it gave him another focus." Mrs. Zion took up golf as well, as did their son, Zachary, 19.

Father and son bonded over both work and golf. "I was looking forward to having him mentor me. He really loved teaching people the market," said Zachary. "That really kills me. That I'm not going to be able to sit there next to him on the desk and see what he did so well."

Mr. Zion, 54, was the son of a rabbi, and spent his early childhood in Davenport, Iowa. At the age of 12 or 13, his family moved to New York City — a big transition for him. Later, he preferred to stay close to home. "Whenever you tried to get him to go somewhere, he would say, 'I know a great place — it's close to a golf course, there's a garage, and it's air-conditioned,' " recalled Zachary. "And I would get excited, and I would say 'Where?' and he'd say, 'Right here!' "

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on September 10, 2002.

ZION-Charles A., 54, Senior Vice President of Cantor Fitzgerald, died September 11, 2001 in the World Trade Center disaster. Beloved husband of Carole, adoring father of Zachary, devoted son of Rabbi Martin and Jane Zion, cherished brother of Barbara Weiss, dear uncle of Rachel and John, Michael, Martha and Jamie, brother-in-love to Bonnie, Christie, Barbara and Will. Respected, esteemed, admired by all family, friends and colleagues for his consummate joy in life, vision in work and dedication to family. A Memorial Service will be held at the Greenwich Reformed Synagogue, 257 Stanwich Road, on Sunday, October 14th at 3PM. Contributions in Charles' memory may be made to the Cantor Fitzgerald Foundation, or Temple Israel of the City of New York.

I have thought of him and your family a lot. It was wonderful to see the tribute your neighbors organized for you at your place in Florida. Chuck and I graduated from Tilton class of '65. We thought of our class as special. We may have been a little biased perhaps, but it was true. A few years later after achieving some of my long term goals I came to realize that it was the calibre of the individual that made our class so unique. If Chuck were not my roommate that first year, I'm not sure I would have "toughed it out". We had many long talks. From him I learned about "intention", focus , tenacity...and just a little humor to make it all worthwhile. The class of '65 was very special...a bit less specical now...

To the Family of Charles A. Zion,

On 9/11/11 our church had a remembrance service for the good folks we lost ten years ago. At the end of the service each of us received a book mark with the name of one of those lost to use as reminder to pray for their family regularly.

I was privileged to received the name of Charles A. Zion and have been praying daily for you since.

I pray now that our Lord may bless you all as you live on remembering and loving him each day.

Blessings,

Greg Ehrlich

Fortunately I was able to meet Chuck and his family in 1985 at their home. Chuck is a man of character, great husband and father. His young son, called me "regular" John which always brings a smile to my face when I think of those times from 1985. Chuck, amazingly brilliant, but always made sure he kept things in perspective. Chuck is often in my thoughts especially when it comes time to be humble and a great gentleman.

Although I did not know Charles Zion, I visited the 9/11 memorial in Sherwood Island State Park yesterday and his name stood out to me (along with a photo that had been placed there of 2 children). I thought to myself "I'll look up his name tomorrow online and see if I can find something to post a comment on" and here I am. I was just passing through CT on my way back home to Philadelphia and thought the memorial sounded interesting. I just wanted to post this so you know even complete strangers are touched by the memorial and you and your family are in my thoughts.

Chuck and Phil Marber loved to play golf at Hudson Nation with Paul Fiore as their caddie. I used to caddie there too, and loved to be out with these great guys. His spirit and warmth always came shining through. I think of him often. He is now in the comfort of Gods Kingdom.

I was humbly blessed to meet the Zion family on the island of Nevis in the early 1990's. Chuck had the kind of personality that when he entered a room, everyone took notice. Big Bear was as kind and gentle as he could be with his beautiful wife Carole. Zach and I spent many fun filled hours finding treasures in the sea together. As far as I am concerned, this family is the creme of the creme without fail. I love them dearly and know we have an angel looking out for Zach and Carole. May God continue to bless this precious family.

In remembrance....

Nancy Sahlberg

November 13, 2006

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
