Linda Luzzicone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2001.
Japan, Hawaii and Romance
In an era when people change jobs with the seasons, Linda Luzzicone was remarkably devoted to Cantor Fitzgerald, where she worked as a broker. At 33, she had worked for Cantor most of her adult life, having joined the firm as a clerk soon after graduating from high school. Many of her best friends worked there, as did Ralph Gerhardt, a colleague who sat in a nearby cubicle on the 104th floor and who later became her boyfriend. "It was a young group there and they had a lot of fun," said her older sister, Debra Luzzicone. "She was happy with what she was doing."

She loved work, but Linda Luzzicone, who grew up in Staten Island and lived on the Upper East Side, was especially passionate about yoga, cycling and travel. In recent years she had made it to Japan, Hawaii, Canada and many spots in between. The inspiration for a trip was usually a friend or family member who happened to live somewhere other than New York. "She loved the idea of visiting people and seeing a new place at the same time," her sister said.

This past summer, Ms. Luzzicone's relationship with Mr. Gerhardt started to become more serious. He told his mother he was "ready to take it to the next step" and last month both sets of parents met for the first time in New York. When the plane struck 1 World Trade Center last Tuesday, both of them were working on the same floor. "At least they were together," her sister said.

After a while you learn the subtle difference

Between holding a hand and chaining a soul,

And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning

And company doesn't mean security,

And you begin to understand

that kisses aren't contracts

And presents aren't promises,

And you begin to accept your defeats

With your head up and your eyes open,

And you learn to build all your roads

On today because tomorrow's ground

Is too uncertain for plans, and futures have

A way of falling down in mid-flight.

After a while you learn that even sunshine

Burns if you get too much,

So plant your own garden and decorate

Your own soul, instead of waiting

For someone to bring you flowers.

And learn that you really can endure,

That you really are strong

And you really do have worth

And you learn and learn . . .

With every good-bye you learn.

Linda,

I miss you so terribly that it's crippling. I read all of the wonderful things that people are writing about you & I'm not suprised. You had a way of making people feel like they were the most important person in the world. I miss that. Most importantly, I miss you! My son was born six weeks ago. It's a shame that he will never know his Aunt Linda...but I know it's you that is making him smile at what seems like air. You gave me that necklace when you visited in August & I still have not taken it off. I don't know when I'll be able to. Ayden has a habit of holding onto it with the tightest little grip..maybe that's your way of connecting with him. The hat that you bought for our night out in Nashville is hanging in Brianna's room. She still asks when you're going to come and get it. I know that you watch over us & you know the pain we feel. (I bet you want to yell at us for our tears) Someday the tears will become out numbered by laughter, but until then, I will cry. Cry for the person who drove me as crazy as much as made me laugh. And I will laugh through my tears everytime I think about the wild things that we used to do. I love you and miss you everyday!

Just wanted to write again and tell you how much I love and miss you! Yesterday, 9/11, was an awful/heartwrenching day, marking the 1 yr anniversary. It has been a very sad and long year without you -a day has never went by without thinking of you!!! I promise to keep your spirit and memories alive. You taught us all a valuable lesson by showing us how to enjoy life. I am so grateful to you and truly feel you were a precious gift from God above. I feel so blessed to have had you as a friend/sister. Please give Emmy a hug for us up there - as I know your watching over her! May you rest in peace and know you'll always be cherished and remembered with so much love and respect!

Linda, A new year has come and passed and I wanted to tell you that I MISS YOU SO MUCH! I miss our chats and listening to you goof on the guys at your desk - you were one of the funniest people. I miss your kind and understanding ear, you've always been there for me. I miss the daily emails we shared, I miss going out to dinner, I miss the fun nights out in the city, I miss dancing the night away, and I miss vacations w/ you. Life will never, ever be the same without you! You brought smiles to everyone around you. I'll always remember your kindness, great sense of humor and fun-loving spirit! You emitted happiness and energy to all of us who were so lucky to have known you! Even if it was for a short time (12 years too soon) I am so grateful to have known you & feel truly blessed. You were like a sister to me, and I will never understand or recover from this tragedy! May you rest in peace sweetie! I look forward to the day we meet again, and take solace knowing, until then, you are watching over for us! I love you and miss you terribly! You have been a true inspiration to me and your strength to endure has taught me so much in life! rest in peace my sweetie and know I'll be seeing you in my dreams tonight! x0x0x0

I hope you knew how much my family and I loved you and still do. Although it had been a long time since we last saw each other, we never stopped thinking of you and your family. Today we think of all of you more than ever. I regret that this tragic incident is what brought us together again, and I wish it could have been some joyous celebration that did instead.

I remember you very vividly and always will. I hope where ever you are you can see how much your loved ones care for you and miss you greatly.

I was drawn to read Linda's tribute, after reading Ralph's in the Toronto Star. I was deeply saddened to learn that two such beautiful people with so much life were taken from those who loved them. There is hardly a day that passes that I do not think of 9-11, and offer a prayer for those left behind. I pray that God would be your comfort, strength, and hope...I know they will always be loved and remebered.

Linda was a warm, spirited, unique individual, with a generous heart and a wicked sense of humor! I take comfort in knowing she's in a better place now, and that she looks down at us all laughing with her infectious giggle. I feel privileged to have known her, and glad that she was part of our family for the last ten years. Linda and my brother Tim shared those happy years and allowed us all to get to know her. They travelled to faraway places and took exotic trips together that enriched both their lives, and are now all that more important, since her life was cut so tragically short. I'll always remember "the girl with the golden hair" as my daughter Emily liked to call her! We love and miss you Linda.

To Linda's Family & Friends,

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I live in the building next to Linda and first read of her loss from the memorial set up outside her building. People still spend time reading her story and her candles still burn. Although I did not know Linda, I do recall passing her in the street and she seemed to always have a big smile on her face.

I also lost my roommate, who also worked at Cantor. His name is Matthew Burke, Linda and Matty probably knew each other. I pray everyday that they are all in a better place.

God Bless!

We are so very sorry for your loss of Linda and her boyfriend Ralph. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
