Richard Madden Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2001.
His Flag Is Still Flying

Richard B. Madden's daughter, Patricia, was only 19 months old when she kissed her father for the last time. But already they had their little jokes.

Every morning, before setting off for his job as an insurance broker at Aon, he would warn her, "I'm going to work. Don't grow up on me now." Then, when he got home, he would chide her for having disobeyed him.

Mr. Madden, 35 and a first-time father, would also forbid her to mess with his still full head of hair, which, of course, she took as an invitation.

And as only a dad can do, he taught her how to clink her juice bottle to his beer glass and say, "Cheers."

Father and daughter shared one other little ritual long before it became fashionable. Mr. Madden would take down the flag outside his home in Westfield, N.J., each night before bed and take it indoors. Each morning, little Tricia would shout, "Flag! Flag!" to remind him it was time to hang it again. "My husband was a strong Republican," said Mr. Madden's wife, Maura. "He was very proud that at her age, his daughter wanted the flag outside."

On Sept. 11, he had called Mrs. Madden from the 100th floor of the south tower, afraid he would not make it out. The authorities later identified his body in the rubble from the inscription on his wedding ring, which read, "Rich, all my love, Maura."

Since Sept. 11, the flag has remained on display, round-the-clock, and the ring has remained on display around Mrs. Madden's neck.

Hey Rich. Amazing it’s been 20 years. The day is still fresh for me and I do think of you often when I see something that reminds me. In particular when I hear someone laugh hard and deep I smile a little. You are missed. JOHN

Wow Rich (has it really been) 20 years! You are missed and remain in my thoughts and prayers all the time. I travel to Manhattan numerous times a year and always stop by your name to not only say a prayer but to say hello my cousin we miss you and I can't wait to be together again shooting hoops and drinking a beer. I just read the recent/preceding postings and smiled. As one of Richard’s cousins, my memories are a bit different but only in the details. The themes are the same. Rich remains and will always be a unique person for all he met. Reading the reflections of others brings a smile. Eternal rest, Rich, and keep smiling that infectious smile.

Rich, I still have 2 bottles of wine that you and your wife brought to my house. They remain on my shelf right next to you and our friends from Aon that were killed. You are always remembered, and we had a lot of fun times at Aon. Rest in forever peace.

Dog, as we called him in high school, was an amazing friend. A genuinely freakishly good basketball player and a passionate Mets fan. His parents were amazing people and his home in Short Hills was always a safe place for us as teens growing up. In fact, the first official gig I ever played as a drummer was in the basement of the Madden household in Millburn/Short Hills, NJ. There was a strong gaggle of teens invited and attending, and the basement was packed. We only knew six songs, but played them over and over until we were too tired to continue. And while I have vivid memories of the girls of Millburn High School dancing and enjoying our music, I will never forget the sight of Mrs. Madden peering down from the top of the stairs, tapping her foot and smiling at the sounds the band was making and the joy of the noise of the crowd listening to us play. The experience was life altering for me, because I knew right then and there that professional or otherwise, I was going to play music for crowds for the rest of my life. I miss my friend and I miss those days, but whenever I hear "Stray Cat Strut", "Roxanne" or "Light My Fire" I smile. Because those were the songs Richard wanted us to play that night, and play them we did... It is a blessing that all these years later I find myself working at Aon, and having the ability to honor his memory and all the Aon colleagues we lost that day.

September 12, 2020

Rich - Another year my cousin and you remain in my thoughts and prayers just as much today as you did 19 years ago. Our world lost a lot that day. While you may not be with us down here you remain close in not only our hearts and minds but our souls as well, Bill.

Rich - you are constantly in our thoughts but particularly at Thanksgiving & Easter when we were all together for family celebrations. And in the summer with memories of beach trips when you all came out to Long Island. Now my daughters know your story and they too keep you in their prayers. Love you, Rich.

Rich,
Well cousin, another anniversary and you are still deeply missed by many. Elizabeth and I watched this morning's NBC News show and their 18th anniversary tribute, in which they announced that last week a law was passed to ensure that going forward all schools in NYC will have a moment of silence each September 11th to pause and remember our loss. You remain in my thoughts and prayers Rich. God Bless.

You're in my thoughts today Rich!! working with you I always looked forward to the great anecdotes you'd tell me about your family and life. You always had a smile for everyone and you beamed when you spoke of your daughter. You are no doubt missed by so many. I'm sure your spirit is soaring.

September 11, 2017

Rich,

We will NEVER forget. There is still a hole in me without you my cousin. I was in The City last weekend moving my stepdaughter into her college dorm on Broadway. I looked out her window to find in full view the Freedom Tower. While it is a beautiful sight, I still cannot go near it. Friends and family have tried but I have a barrier that I doubt will ever pass. I miss you Rich. You remain always in my heart and memory.

Rich,

Another year Cousin but this one marks 15 lonely and sad years without your smile and quick wit. I am sitting in the Delta lounge at JFK waiting for our connecting flight as we return from Scotland.

It was great last year to see not only your Mom, Melissa, Josh, Bob and Mark but Maura & Patricia and family. We talked for hours and as always drank one for you. We all still miss you and always will.

My thoughts Rich are always of you today. We started the same day together at Aon doing the same work. My heart is always heavy knowing my children get to still hold my hand, say good night, and hear my voice say I love you. I know your family feels your love always, hears your infectious laugh, and goes forward everyday knowing your strength still flows through them through the Holy Spirit. May God bless them and keep them, may Jesus face shine upon your family and be gracious until them. May The Lord's countenance be upon your family Rich; and give them peace.

Rich,

You are still with me cousin. I write this while at my desk with the live 13th anniversary ceremony webcast in the background. It has been 45 minutes and they haven't finished the "C's". As you know, I talk to you a lot throughout the year which helps me so very much. Your smile and heart felt infectious laugh will never be forgotten. I still haven't been able to find the strength to visit the Memorial plaza ... maybe this year. You will NEVER be forgotten Rich.

Mad Dog,
The last time I saw you was way back in the Denison days. I only found out recently that you were taken in this horrible act of terror so many years ago. It was almost impossible to believe. I have since gone to the site in NYC and seen your name etched in the memorial. It's heartbreaking. You were a great guy Rich and are surely missed terribly. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

Rich,

Another year has passed but not our memories. A few weeks ago I was in the City for business. On the drive home we stopped by St Rose. Perfect timing as Mass had just started. The last time I was there was for your service. It was sad. Time is flying Rich.

September 10, 2012

Rich, I was your assistant at Aon, I left 6 months before 9/11. The time I spent working with you was so impressionable for me. You were such a great person to work with. I really enjoyed your stories about your family life.

I recall you told me your parents always shared a drink at the end of the night to talk about their day. I recall you said you can meet a very successful man at a dive bar, i totally agreed with you. haha those two were a few of my favorites and you had many of them. Honestly everything you said made sense to me. After leaving Aon I even contemplated going to law school because of you....that didnt happen but i was seriously considering it for a little while anyway. You just made it all seem great. That was your magic!

I saw your wife at your memorial service, I saw her from a short distance and she looked so strong and brave. So many people were giving their condolences. I was afraid of the emotion i would emit if I spoke to her. I always regret that but Im sure she knew how you effected the people you encountered in your life. You were a great guy that left this earth far too soon. Clearly your memory lives on with so many loved ones. I do think of you often and hope you look down on your friends from wherever you are and give them a cheers! Im so happy I got to know you and I will always think of you and remember you. Caroline

Rich,

10 years and it seems like yesterday in so many ways. It feels like yesterday going out for kickball at St. Rose's... Sharing a laugh over a beer...

Those memories are the ones we will carry with us. Love to your family xoxoxo

We love you. Always.

September 11, 2011

Rich,

Ten years and you are still terribly missed. This morning before heading to Mass we lit a candle in your memory under our Virgin Mary statue. Also, this morning when we let our dog outside, the two gardenia plants Elizabeth and I bought over a month ago, unexpectedly had flowered. All signs that you are still with us. At the end of Mass, Father had the entire congregation kneel and say a special prayer for all of you. I miss you cousin. We always will.

August 3, 2011

Rich,

Ten years since your death. I am happily married with a wonderful son. Yeah, you would have loved the name Mick. Mom hates it. It carries far too much luggage for an Irish Catholic woman who grew up in Boston. "I don"t care. I am going to call him Michael." We would have had a good laugh about it. Can't blame her I guess.

You would have been so proud of Mom. She lost you and Dad far too early. Of course there have been tears. But she never complained and always exhibited grace under pressure. We were lucky to have her.

Maura & Tricia are doing wonderfully with Tom and their family. You would be so happy. It is something we don't take for granted.

Our family has never be the same. Your presence is always felt - most often with joy but always with a present sadness. To suggest differently is dishonest.

10 years... I miss you.

Love, Loomis

Hi Rich: It's strange how our minds work. I go a longer time in comfort, then something I see or smell brings me right back like it happend yesterday. I can only imagine what your beautiful daughter looks like as she grows up. I'm sorry Rich that God took you from your family so early. But when I remember my days at Aon I remember you. Rich,

Well here we are again. I think of you often. We were all cheated by the events five years ago. In typical American style, the media is capitalizing on our loss with TV shows, movies and all day coverage. I am still unable to watch any of it. I drove in to work with the radio off this morning. It was a peaceful drive just remembering you and the fun and laughs we had over the years at family events. I know you were with us last fall at Mark's wedding as we all drank way too much and in typical family style, a lot of laughs and toasts to you were had.

Still missing you,

These hearts were woven of human joys and cares, washed marvellously with sorrow, swift to mirth. The years had given them kindness. Dawn was theirs, and sunset, and the colours of the earth. These had seen movement, and heard music, known slumber and waking, loved, gone proudly friended, felt the quick stir of wonder, sat alone, touched flowers and furs and cheeks. All this is ended. I never new Richard B. Madden although we share our last name. I noticed Richard's name one day by chance. I kept coming back to his name – wondering what his life was like. Since we may be related in a distant way, I’m compelled to add my condolences to Richard’s family and friends. Like Richard I am a father, son, brother, nephew, neighbor, co-worker and friend. I love my son as much as I am sure he loved his daughter. The lives touched by Richard and all those lost on September 11, 2001, are better for having known and loved these people but they are hurt terribly by missing them. I am grateful for the opportunity to share some thoughts in this way. God bless Richard and his family, along with all those who lost loved ones on September 11.

Hey, Rich. I sure do miss you. As the anniversary nears, my heart is breaking more and more. I am so mad this has happened and I'm angry that they took you away from your friends and family.

I think of you often, and your family.

Until we meet again.

Howdy,

My drill team is doing a touching tribute to the September 11th through dance, and, being from outside of Houston, and not knowing any of the victims personally, in order to better understand the tragedy and more accurately depict the emotion, we were assigned to research an individual. Mr. Madden's was the first name that stood out to me, and I'm glad it did. I know he was a wonderful man, and God is overjoyed to have him in his company. I wish love and hope for yall, and especially for Patricia. I wish I knew what to say, but all I can do is just Pray for yall and send my love.

Sincerely,

Brittany
