I think of Dennis often. Dennis and I served together with the U.S. Army Security Agency in Saigon, Vietnam with the 3rd Radio Research Unit in 1964. I remember one particular memory. We shared the same barracks at the 3rd RRU. It was after we finished a work shift at Whitebirch operations and had just finished the usual cold shower and were getting into our civilain clothes. Dennis strolled from his end of the barracks to my area, he put his foot up on my foot locker to tie his shoe. He was due to return to the states in few weeks and I asked him what he planned on doing when he got back home. He proudly said, "New York firefighter, like family before me". He was special!!

To view three photos taken at Saigon Zoo in 1963 that include Dennis, do the following: Google oldspooksandspies.org. Then click on "Vets Photos" on home page left column, then scroll down and click on Hoggard, Ken. Under first heading "Around Tan Son Nhut", scroll down to see young Dennis (click on photo to enlarge) as he looked when we served together at Davis Station, 3rdRRU. I always think of him each 9/11. He is missed and not forgotten.

Your memorial patch and the vest it was on is retired now as I can no longer ride motorcycles. But together we covered over 400,000 miles. Hundreds if not over a thousand asked about it. And learned of you.
Never forgotten. Save me a spot Chief. I'll be along soon.

Today was a great day. I responded to Forest Park in St. Louis Missouri in the hopes of getting one of the flags that were placed in the park during a memorial for the NY First Responders. There was one for every Fireman & Policeman who lost their life in the 911 attack. I was the lucky St. Louis Police Officer who who received the flag of Fire Fighter Dennis Cross. I fly it proudly in front of my home in Union MO. His picture was taped to the pole. I will see you on the other side brother!

Sunday, anniversary of Sept. 11, I carried a photo of Dennis Cross in our Constitution Day Parade held in Nevada City, Calif. All the members of our group ea carried a photo of one of the firemen lost on 9-11-2001. Our group won the best in the parade award, and all the people viewing the parade were extremely impressed. Our local firemen saluted the photos as we passed by carrying them.

JoAnn - my deepest sympathy for you and all of the kids - 10 years late. We were neighbors in Islip Terrace for a short time. Although we didn't stay in touch when I moved away, I thought of Dennis on 9/11 2001 -but dismissed the idea that he was still in the NYFD - I assumed he had retired. When I watched 9/11 10th anniversary coverage this weekend - I was moved to check and realized that Dennis was one of the heros who sacraficed so much!

Today is the tenth anniversary of Sept. 11th. Mr. Cross was my soccer coach when I was a boy. I remember him being fun, active and in great physical condition. I remember him being a runner and seeing home run around the neighborhood. I remember going to his house to play with his son and their very small dog. As I turned 40 recently I took up running and this morning I was running before my kids soccer games thinking of Mr. Cross and his family and couldn't help but recognize his influence on me as a coach , as I was running before attending my kids soccer game. I am grateful to have known such a man even if I was a young boy.

I am writing to share an experience with you. I had the honor of participating in 9 / 11 Memorial Stair Climb (http://www.denverstairclimb.com/?zone=/unionactive/view_page.cfm&page=History20Of20The20Climb)
in Denver CO last Saturday. 343 firefighters from all over the mid-west gathered on the loading dock of a Denver high-rise. It was very humbling to see 343 firefighters together and to know the loss you and your family have experienced. Every firefighter climbed the high-rise twice (building is only 55 stories) in honor of every firefighter lost on September 11, 2001. We did this in full turnouts, carrying a high-rise pack and a picture of a brother or sister lost. I had the honor of carrying the picture of BC Dennis A. Cross. I just wanted to share my experience and let you know you are not forgotten.

Been 9 years now your memorial patch has traveled with me on my bike. Many ask about it over the years. You have traveled with me nearly 100,000 miles, and touched many lives who never even knew you, they have come to read about you only after you were gone.
Brave, selfless, courageous, Know that you are missed and admired. Here's to another 100,000 miles with Capt Courageous on my vest.

I was lucky enough to know Dennis Cross and honored to fight many, many fires with him while Dennis "Capt Courageous" was a Lt. & Capt of H&L 102. He was the smartest and most fearless fire officer I and many others I ever worked with in my 25 years with the FDNY. He saved the lives of countless civilians and firefighters.I will never forget when you handed me a set of your own Lt. bars when I was promoted to Lt. You will NEVER be forgotten by all of us whose honor it was to say we knew ,and got to go to fires with you.

Hi my name is Phill, from the Rio Hondo fire academy #69. I visited the fire academy on 9/11 and oddly enough so did some of my former classmates (without anybody coordinating it). The current class, #73, were cunducting a somber rembering of the firefighters of 9/11-like it is a custom on every September 11th.
If anybody is in the Los Angeles (California) area and would like to visit the "Wall of fallen heroes" to please contact (562)941-4082 (ext. #21) and speak with chief Rickman.
Thanks.
God bless.

Daddy, I love and miss you always. As hard as this day always is, this year was softened with the loving eyes and smile of my baby boy, Nolan Dennis. You're in him, I know it, and he hugs me with your heart. He napped the whole time at the cemetery today despite the unpleasant weather. I know you kept him cozy so I can spend my time with you. I lived next door to Dennis and his family for 14 yrs .He was a strong dedicated man.He was always doing some kind of project at home with Joann. In all the yrs i never heard him raise his voice or have a bad word to say about anyone. He was dedicated to his family and his job.I grew up with his children in fact i got the chicken pox from his kids, i played with Denise, got tortured by Brian . I saw him in his yard, and leaving for work for fourteen years. Joann happened to come up here and visit us a few yrs later i saw the pain in her eyes and heard it in her voice. Her love still continues for Dennis its amazing, i've never seen a love that strong. My deepest sympathy goes out to all who loved him and knew him or was saved by him he was a brave man and deeply missed.

I was thinking about the 911 tragedy today...mainly because those numbers have appeared alot in my life for different reasons. I bought a memorial bracelet after the WTC tragedy and was sent a bracelet with name Batt. Chief Dennis Cross engraved on it. I still have the bracelet and pay honor to a man I do not know but who served with courage for our fellow americans in a time of great need. I believe in the six degrees of separation...we are all connected in some way. Blessed be to your family now and always.

I hope all who read this are well. My name is Billy Cross. I am a firefighter in the Town of Saugus which is 10 miles North of Boston. I've been on the job for 13 years. My father was a Captain in the City of Chelsea which borders Boston for 35 years. I loved reading about your husband, Father, Brother or friend. He seems like the kind of a guy any fireman would like to be around. I am really sorry for your loss. It must make you proud to reflect on what a brave and great man Chief Cross was. If there are any fundraisers (t-shirts, road races, etc.). Please let me know. It would be my honor to try and help.
