A memory of Tommy popped into my head tonight that made me smile. It was just a chat we had one day when I was getting ready to graduate HS and he had stopped by his parents and he took the time to ask me about my plans. Something simple but he listened intently and was excited for me. I can see us standing by his car in front of the yard, talking. A flash of a memory takes you back. I had to write it down. Will always have a special place in my heart for all of the Crotty´s, my Merrick neighbors x

Summer nights in the mid 1970s, we traveled parks and playgrounds in search of Long Island’s basketball talent. My companion younger cousin had a deadly textbook jump shot. I simply knew how to find him. We propelled each other beyond our athletic abilities.
I remember our last game together. 20 years ago. Just two of us, me and my best man Tommy Crotty. A driveway game, one-on-one, which plays over again in my mind. We were both winners for what we gave to each other.
I WILL NEVER FORGET

I, too, came to this tribute to Tommy via the story, "Meat" from The Sun. I could have been friends with him. I grew up on Long Island, I am the same age, I am a triathlete and have competed in The Mighty Hamptons race and now, my daughter plays basketball. He sounded like a great guy and I am sorry for your loss. Be comforted that the way he lived his life continues to serve as an inspiration!

I wish I had known Tom Crotty. After reading the article about him titled "Meat" in the March 2012 edition of The Sun Magazine, by former basketball teammate Brian Doyle which led me to here; and after reading all the tributes here, I feel like I knew him now, even though I never did. He makes me want to aspire to living in a manner so as to make such a difference in so many lives around him, as he so certainly did.

That never bothered him or at least he never indicted to me that it did. I think of him often this time of year and him dribbling up the court at the Mcann Center. ....I just paused to sob and pray that his family can endure less sorrow if I bear some suffering with them. To The Crotty Family,
Early in my Counseling Career at Maria Regina, Tommy was one of my students. I always refer to him as "one of my favorite kids," from one of my favorite families! I admired him for his wonderful qualities; he was bright, full of positive energy, kind, and always a gentleman. As the cheerleading coach I was there for all of his games and often marveled at his passion for basketball! No one deserved a scholarship more than he did.
I was devastated to hear of his passing and think of him and all of you often. I hope you can be warmed by your wonderful memories with him on this 10th anniversary of 9-11. I will keep you and Tom in my thoughts and and prayers.
Fondly,

I am a junior in high school, and yesterday we did various things to honor the victims of 9/11. We all went down to the gym to sign the names of victims on giant banner. Each person got a name and wrote it in one of the many hands traced onto the banner. I got Thomas G. Crotty's name. I decided to write the name on my hand so I could look him up later. Seeing all the condolences and memories from friends and family makes the 9/11 tragedy so much more real to me. This man should not have died that day. No one should have. I'm very sorry.

In the rough and tumble world of a large NYC Merrill office, Tom took the time to answer my numerous questions with patience, kindness and professionalism. To the Crotty Family,
As we approach the 10th anniversary of the events of 9/11, I want to share this with the Crotty Family. I have been teacher in the Sachem School district for the last 28 years. Over the last 10 years I have have been doing a presentation about 9/11 for the entire 7th grade class in the building. In the end the last slide tell about Tommy my friend and teammate. I have to say I started this becasue of something Jimmy said to me at the wake of Tommy. He said to me "I just don't want people to forget Tommy". Well over the last 10 years I have tried to do my part and I think it is going to pay off. I have recieved a letter from one of my former 7th grade students,in it he told me he was going for his Eagle Scout. He has to do a project for the community and he asked if he could do a 9/11 memorial at Samoset. ( the school I teach at) He wanted to do it because of the presentation and the loss of my friend Tommy. He also asked me to do a quote which will be put on a plaque for all to see forever.
Well Jimmy, Tommy will be remembered I promise. When the project is done I will tell you.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family today. Tommy was a teammate of mine at Maria Regina High School. Tommy, a junior, made all of us reach our full potential because of his passion, hardwork and competitiveness. His love of the game and his teammates is my fondness memory. His legacy is that "overachievers" always find success. Tommy's drive and huge heart pushed me to work harder to reach my goals. I regret not writing these words sooner to your family. May God Bless you today and may He and Tommy hold you in the palm of their hands.

It’s been two years since Tommy left us – it seems like yesterday. I knew him well, but not as well as others here, I think of him often. From what I’ve read here, he was exactly the guy I thought he was – athletic, good looking, honorable and caring. For Joanne and the girls, I can not imagine your loss. I can find no solace in his departure except that I was lucky to know him.
