Just remembering you on this day. I was hoping to hear our name called, but I had a meeting when it was your turn. I have just noticed that all you numbers are connected. Came into this world on 8/22 and departed from us on 9/11.
When I do the mathematics 8+1=9 or 9-1=8 then you have 11+ 11=22.
You had a purpose amongst the living. Rest in eternal peace my brother.

I want to extend my deepest condolences to the Houston family both immediate and extended on both sides. I will never know who you are and wished I had known who you. Just how I have made friends since I move to NYC for work on 11/11/11; you and I could have been friends too, have you been not been perished. But ever since I started riding the Path train to and from NJ/NY, a portrait of yours would always be steering at me, for some reason it captured my attention, is like your spirit was saying something to me in unspoken words. Not sure why, not knowing you were one of the fallen hero, until I looked you up. Ever since I have had the chance to read your story and family stories. I have ever since adopted you as my HERO from 2012. Rest-In-Power Officer Houston.

You were such a handsome young man. Never saw your picture before today. At the first memorial service when all the names were read, I listened and heard yours. Our small community had a memorial service and the American Legion Post handed out flags with names of those who had lost their lives. That is how we are connected. You in heaven and me on earth. My deepest sympathies and prayers to your loved ones and all others who lost
their lives.

I don't think I ever saw the name Uhuru until today. If you went to Norfolk State University, you probably know him as "B"! I just want everyone to know that he was a good friend, and rather than dwell on the sadness, and grief, I have a funny story that will put a smile on your face, and tell you all you need to know about him: I was still in the Marines in like 92-93 and on a 96 hour pass. While I was in Port Authority minding my business trying to catch a train, I hear some fake-@$$, nasally, "authority-figure" voice yelling from behind me: "Sir, we're gonna need to see some ID" So I turn around, ready to go Chuck D/Farrakhan on him, and its B barely containing his laughter!!!! I'm like "Oh HELL NAW!!! B, You The Man?!?!?!" We had a GREAT laugh, and clowned each other to his partner before going our separate ways....I knew he was a Port Authority cop, and had always wondered if he was at the WTC, but always resisted checking for fear of what I now know as fact. A GOOD cop. A GOOD brotha. A GOOD friend. RIP "B".

I loved looking into those bright eyes when you and your sister were born. Even though I showed family love, I didn't get to tell you how proud I was of the man you had become. With humble beginnings and within a short amount of time, you have done so much to teach us how to do the right thing at the right moment. I’m saddened that the right thing was your ultimate sacrifice.
Gonja you may be gone, but your caring spirit and the love we have for you will live on through eternity!

Gonja,
We go way back. You were one of the best kids I knew growing up in Bayview. Always smiling, never had a bad thing to say about anybody. I will definitely keep in touch... Love, Rick Hill

To the Houston Family,
After learning of Officer Houston's death, I immediately phoned a friend with NYPD to confirm the news. Several months prior to 9-11 my family and I were visiting my friends in NYC. As we walked through the Trade Centers we met Officer Houston. As a police officer myself, we began to converse about the job and later Officer Houston showed me, and my family a degree of hospitality that can only be shared between the law enforcement fraternity. We were given personal treatment, shown the trade centers and it was obvious Officer Houston took great pride in his job as he smiled and proudly led us through the centers. As a sign of my thanks, I had agreed with Officer Houston to send him a patch from my department, a business card, and a few other things. Officer Houston asked so little for being a tour guide, friend, and brother in the law enforcement community. As I parted, I offered him the warmest welcome, should he ever come to North Carolina. Unfortunately, I was unable to send him anything and as a consequence, I still have the envelope in my desk with all the things I was going to send to him. I would love to have his family receive it if I can have a contact, address, etc. My life, along with my family's was touched by this wonderful, vibrant, smiling officer of the Port Authority.
Sincerest,
Kevin L. Crowder

To Sonya and family My deepest thoughts are with you, I dont know if you remember me I, I used to work at Xcel Credit Union when I first meet you, but I knew your husband. I also spoke to you after I found out that Uhuru was taken from us I was so deep in my own lost of my sister that I heard people saying that he was gone but I could not believe it, but when I saw his picture I broke down and cried not only for my self but for your lost, because I knew you had just had a baby and why would some one as nice as your husband be taken away from us. Sonya keep up the faith just keep trusting in the lord it is now 4 yrs later and it feels like it just happen. Remember Jesus is a friend we can lean on he is always there to catch us when we fall, even in times of our lost when we think all hope is gone we can always count on him if we just belived.

To the Houston family I humbly offer my condolences. I've had the pleasure to work with him before he was taken from us. Thuogh it was a brief period of time there was one thing that I realized right away-no matter the situation I knew that he had my back. It of course goes without saying that I had his.I didn't go to work that day(I was in the er with my wife-a survivor of the first attack on the WTC-very late). We lost a brother that day and there's no doubt in my mind that he made the ultimate sacrifice trying to save lives...May God bless and keep you all.

My Deepest Sympathies to the Friends and Family of Uhuru Houston. I did not have the pleasure to meet Uhuru. His profile caught my eye since we are about the same age and I grew up in Englewood. After reading articles about his life and what a wonderful man he was, my sadness grew deeper. My prayers are with your wife and beautiful children. I know you are looking over them. Thank you Officer Houston. I am so sorry you lost your life while serving your community and country.

Sometime has gone by and yet this was an event that one can never put
to sleep....Some many lives were lost that day, so many loved ones
taken from their wives, husbands,
nieces, cousins, brothers, children
aunts, uncles...and the list goes on and on...Even as I enter this
entry on this day on June 2004...
I shall never forget that awful day
in September when it seemed as though the world came to a tragic end and for most families left behind ...I believe.. the world did
come to an end...I will continue to
lift up prayers for your wife and your children...They truly will miss their DAD always....You fought a good fight...Now rest dear

Only yesterday I found out that Uhuru was lost on Sept. 11. I remember him as a young child who was a neighbor of my closest friend when we all lived in Canarsie. It was wonderful to see that he made a good life for himself. He and his family and loved ones are in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Sonya and Family,
God placed an angel in our lives, when he gave us Bee. When I think about him, all I see is that huge smile that now seemed that it always lit up the room. On some of my worst days, it seems like I would run into Bee, greeting me with a smile. I know that had to be his calling to become a police officer and help people. I pray that remembering his smile, helps you and your family make it through the rough days.Sonya, you and your children are in my prayers. I pray that you are proud of the man that God brought in to your life, if only for a short time. Hold on to the memories and if your son ever needs a reminder of the wonderful man he had for a father, please show him this e-mail and the many others from people who have not seen or talk to his father in years, but share in your lost!

My name is Betsy and I attend St. Ursula Academy as a freshman. On the one year anniversary of September 11th, our entire school had a prayer service in memory of all those who died for the sake of our freedom in the United States. We each received a name of someone to pray for that passed away on that tragic day. I received Uhuru G. Houston. That whole day, as I made the paper of his name into a bracelet, I thought about his family, and what he was thinking when all this was happening one year ago. I knew he died in honor and God will bring him to Heaven knowing that. I'll keep that bracelet as a memory for everything Uhuru stood for and keep him in my prayers every day. The one thing I noticed about Uhuru that stood out was his smile. His smile won't fade in Heaven, it will only grow bigger. I'm proud of Uhuru and hope that he knows that he fought with dignity and courage. God Bless his family and friends. Uhuru is an angel.

Gonja,
You know we go way back to Junior High School Days. You were always, even then, full of so much joy, laughter and good cheer.I remember the shock on my face and your outburst of laughter the day I saw you at Bellevue in your uniform escorting a prisoner. My heart was deeply sadened to have heard that such a wonderful person had been taken from us.It bothered me for a while, until I had a dream of you standing up in the clouds with that beautiful smile that you've always had and I said to you,"I'm so sorry that you had to leave the way you did". And your reply was"I'm fine,..everything here is okay". That dream brought me at peace with your going home to be with the lord. And to your wonderful wife and kids....rest assure, you WILL see him again.Until then...stay strong, keep your head up, and carry on his legend.Everything that he has shared with you and enstilled in you will now shine through you.Continue to let his light shine.God Bless You.

B,
Bro it seems like just yesterday we were next door neighbors at NSU. The snapping sessions that went on for hours with you and Blue. Making fun of each other but having each others back also. I remember talking a few days earlier about who allowed you and Blue to get Shields and guns. It makes me laugh till this day! You know me and you know some secrets that we kept between you and me and I cherish that. You know I am not the mushy type so I am gonna sing your praise here for a moment and I know you are telling me to cut it out but your gonna listen! Dawgs you are a hero and the epitome of a man! You were safe but you went back to help others no greater love could have been shown! I am proud, so proud to have known you and been friends. I know your Family will be blessed and until we meet again. Stay up!

Gonja,
It has been a difficult year since you have gone to be with the lord my old friend. Each time I have traveled home to NY, you and your family have been deep in my thoughts. I remember when we would sit in the barber shop you worked in on Virginia Beach Blvd. in Norfolk, VA during our Norfolk State days and crack jokes on each other, Tim(Gross) and Arthur (Gibbs). I always remember your laugh and positive outlook. You were a rare find of a friend. I also remember about the time you and Sonya met. I knew what you both shared was very special (So, Sonya Hold Your Head High). You also really introduced me to House Music. We lost touch with each other but I always tried to keep up with what you were upto through Shelton & Erica .I just want to say your are missed and it has been an honor to have and call you a true friend.
Who would have thought you would be "5-0" when we were in college?
You grew up and handled your business for you and your family.
"Uhuru G. Houston" Well done, Brother.
I Love You,

Gonja you will be missed. I cant think of one day in NSU I didn't see a smile on your face. I can remember when I first saw you in your uniform. I laughed so hard and you did too. I said who made you a police and you said "right?." You was always sweet, never disrespetful in any way. I know that you was a good husband and father. I am still in prayer for your family. I know God will keep your family in perfect peace as long as their minds stay on him. Gonja, you and that beautiful smile will never be forgotten. You will always be loved by many and that will trickle down to your family.
