David Alger Obituary

Tales From a Lunch Table

For a generation of up- and-comers in the money world of Lower Manhattan, the scene was deeply familiar: David Alger's lunch table. Nothing fancy about it ‹ Mr. Alger seemed to thrive on cheeseburgers and apple pie, and any nondescript Wall Street coffee shop would do. His stories are what live on, and the lessons embedded within them about the stock market, and about life.

"I can see him chewing apple pie and telling these stories," said Rob Lyon, who worked for Mr. Alger at Fred Alger Management in the 1980's and remained close. One of Mr. Alger's lunch lessons was that big companies cannot possibly grow as fast as little ones, and that problems in a company ‹ or a life ‹ can never fully be solved in one three-month reporting period. You have to look to the horizon, he would tell the young Turks.

Mr. Alger, who was 57, took over operations at Alger Management from his brother, Frederick, in 1995. But by then his impromptu lunch seminars were Wall Street lore, former pupils like Mr. Lyon said. And strangely, all the stories seemed to have the same opening line: "That reminds me of something," he would say.

David Alger, Manager of Mutual Funds, Is Dead at 57
By DOUGLAS MARTIN
David Alger, whose approach to investing in stocks propelled the mutual funds he managed to the top of the 90's bull market, died in the collapse of the World Trade Center, his wife, Josephine, said yesterday. He was 57 and had homes in Manhattan and Tuxedo Park, N.Y.

According to Gregory Duch, the executive vice president and chief financial officer of Fred Alger Management Inc., none of the 35 employees in the firm's 93rd-floor office in the north tower at the time of the disaster appear to have escaped.

Mr. Alger, a frequent guest on television shows about Wall Street investments, was known as one of the more prominent opponents of so- called value investing, most famously practiced by Warren E. Buffett. He rejected Mr. Buffett's emphasis on underlying corporate values, relying instead on such factors as his own intricate analyses of future earnings potential. He became a leading proponent of technology stocks.

"He saw things that others didn't," said Don Phillips, managing director of Morningstar Inc., a Chicago firm which tracks the mutual fund industry. "He produced spectacular results."

When David Alger took over the firm's operations from his brother, Frederick, in 1995, it managed $3 billion in assets and 82 employees. At his death, it managed $15 billion and had 220 employees, Mr. Duch said.

Mr. Duch said that Frederick, who had remained as chairman, would return to serve as president and chief investment officer. Frederick's son-in-law, Dan Chung, who previously worked at the firm, will be chief investment officer. The company has continued to do business at its offices in Jersey City and Morristown, N.J.

David Dewey Alger was born on Dec. 15, 1943, in California, and grew up in Grosse Pointe, Mich. He graduated from Harvard where he majored in history, and earned an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan.

In 1968, he began his career as a securities analyst, and in 1972 joined his brother's firm. He ultimately owned 20 percent of the firm, with his brother retaining ownership of the remainder. Frederick moved to Geneva in 1995, leaving David in day-to- day control of the business.

David Alger became known for training analysts in the rigorous research methods he practiced. His elaborate computer-modeling techniques were accompanied by a reliance on old-fashioned legwork. He once dispatched a group of analysts disguised as graduate students to observe the holiday traffic at Toys "R" Us stores.

In addition to his wife and brother, Mr. Alger is survived by a sister, Suzette Howard of Aiken, S.C.; and daughters Cristina de Marigny Alger of Cambridge, Mass.; and Roxanna Geffen of Manhattan.

I met David in the mid 1950s when he visited Scotland with my great aunt who was his nanny. She was Mary (Polly) McCrone. We lived outside Glasgow at the time. He was staying with my gran on his holiday. So sorry to hear that he died at such a young age in such a dreadful tragedy. I just remember him when we were both children.

It saddens me tremendously when one loses a good friend, especially when he is so full of life and humor. The passage of time does not lessen the sadness.

Here is a day when we both were groomsmen at a mutual friend's wedding in New York. Finding this picture in an old photo album led me to write this today. God, we were so young.

I traded commodities at Hutton in those days, and David always wanted me to get a real job. He always teased me about that. He also encouraged me to write a book. It took 30 years for me to follow his advice about writing.

Thank you, David.

Mr. Alger went out of his way to show his appreciation for some research I did to help correct misallocated funds on one of the retirement accounts the company I worked for managed. He not only sent me a picnic basket full of goodies and wrote me a letter thanking me, but he also took the time to call me and offer me a job. Although I never actually met Mr. Alger I will never forget his kind gesture.

I don't think I will ever meet anyone like David Alger. He was kind and generous and truly cared about people. He made a connection to people and gave genuine bear hugs when he greeted you. I was fortunate enough to work for David's company and at my first holiday dinner, he introduced me to his wife as "this is the lady with all the fan mail that I have been telling you about." I was just an entry level phone rep and he made me feel so important! Through the years, David took time to thank me for my work. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of my friends that were lost on 9/11. David was surely one of a kind, a gentleman. He is truly missed but not forgotten.

To the family of David, he was an extraordinary man. As a mentor and friend David helped many of us on Wall Street and on Main Street America serve our clients well by recommending Fred Alger Funds.

David offered me a job as a Technology Analyst. He was a good man and I will always be grateful to him and his staff for their hard work and dedication to providing outstanding research. As a friend and fellow in the trenches, you are sorely missed.
May God continue to pour down His mercy and grace upon your family.

I wrote some years ago saying how much I missed seeing David Alger in CNBC etc. As we approach September 11 tomorrow, and I sit here listening to CNBC, I find myself thinking of David Alger and what a nice man he seemed to be. We are both born in 1943 and how much he has missed in these years and how much his family must have missed him. So just wanted to know that we all still remember fine men and women who lost their lives in the terrible tradgedy of September 11, 2001. September 11 was my Dad's birthday so it is a date that comes to my mind easily. May God bless all of us and keep the memory of good people with us always. It was here at the lake that I received a call from my CA daughter asking if I had the television on. It was 6 AM in CA so I turned on the TV and shortly after saw the second plane hit. Then I knew that the world would never again be the same. So many fine people died and David Alger was one of them!! All the best to his family.

As a rookie financial advisor in 1991
I found the best way to help my clients was to invest their savings in the Alger Funds. One elderly client in particular would call me almost daily to keep me apprised of changes in the NAV's. (They were usually up)

When he passed away I think the money he made in your funds made his widows life a little easier. Your kids and wife should know that you made a positive difference in many average Americans lifes.

I didn't know David D. Alger personally, but I know a relative of his, who is running for political office here in Los Angeles. David gave me a job after I was a temp. in his old Maiden Lane office. He hired me on the spot after hearing my "phone voice" and sent me to their Jersey City location as a phone rep. I had an irate customer on the phone one day that was cursing and out of control. He demanded to speak to David and naturally this was not customary however after the caller continued to call (and as luck would have it I continued to get his calls out of a whole floor of reps) my mgr called the NY office and told David what was happening. He let me put the call through and told the man that he could have his money back from the fund and if he ever spoke to his staff again in an disrespectful manner that he'd "head butt him"...he then called me at my desk and asked if I was okay. He praised me for my patience with this man and apologized that I had to deal with him at all and assured me it had been taken care of. When we later heard the head butt quote it became legendary.
More than funny stories and acts of chivelry I'll never forget that David "saw something" in me and always checked in to see how I was doing. This big powerful man actually cared about the lowly new phone rep. It speaks volumes to his character and I can't even imagine what he must have meant to his family if after 7 years thoughts of his kindness still brings a prideful smile to my face.
To his family and loved ones you are in my prayers. I hope that this little story brought a smile to your face, it always does mine.
Love,

Dave Alger and I were classmates at the University of Michigan. We took most of our finance classes together and received our MBAs in 1968. When I heard that Dave would be the Keynote speaker at the Alumni Reunion weekend in Ann Arbor in October 2000 I immediately signed up for the event. When he saw me in the audience he came over and gave me his traditional bear hug. We talked about our Finance Professors Doug Hayes and Jim Pilcher and how we both barely survived Professor Thomas Schreiber's required statstics course. Dave was as great a guy in the flesh as he appeared to be on his many TV appearances. He touched many people's lives and is greatly missed.

My sincere condolences to David's wife, two daughters and extended family.

Although my daughter, Meredith [age 23], was employed by Fred Alger Management and also lost her life along with David on 9-11, I have fond memories of him.

He had come to the University of Michigan Business School in February 2000 to speak to the Business students. My daughter had been hired by David to begin working at the firm upon her graduation from UofM in April 2000. So when she had asked if I wanted to come and meet her future boss, I didn't hesitate.

I attended that evening and was amazed to learn what a kind, caring, and loving person he was. Upon seeing us enter the room, he hurried over to greet her with a BIG hug and said, "I wondered if you would be here tonite!" As Meredith's father had died when she was 11 and her sister was 9, it warmed my heart to know another caring male figure would be in her young life--and that she would not be just a "faceless" employee in just another firm in NYC.

I pass this along with loving memories. I'm sure David took all the hands of his employees and led them to Heaven together. God Bless!
