James Amato Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 25, 2001.
'A Fireman's Fireman'
Capt. James Amato, a member of Squad 1 in Brooklyn, loved putting out fires. No sitting around the firehouse for him; he wanted to be in the middle of the action, wherever it was. After years as a firefighter in one of the busier ladder companies, he applied for the elite rescue division, so he would always be one of the first people responding to a crisis.

"He liked to be one of the guys who made a difference," said his brother, Lee Amato, a firefighter from Cooper City, Fla. "He liked to get off the piece and run in with the men. He was a fireman's fireman."

The brothers spent vacations together, sometimes in Florida and sometimes on the ski slopes. Lee Amato, the elder of the two, called his brother "my dearest friend."

Captain Amato, a father of four who lived in Ronkonkoma, N.Y., and was a college wrestler, had close calls throughout his life. As a toddler, he barely survived a bout of spinal meningitis. And earlier this year, he told his men to file out of a burning building while they waited for a hose line to be set up. A few seconds after they got out, there was an explosion. "He was laughing about it," said his brother. "He said, 'Timing is everything.' "

MANHATTAN 11/9

Ceci est lhistoire dune journée
Que ce soit Pékin, Dublin ou Rio
Partout le sombre scénario
Dun monde qui a mal tourné.
Le dollar perd toute sa valeur
Broadway Avenue sans ses couleurs
Le prestige du pont de Brooklyn
Dans une épaisse poussière sincline.
Les mêmes images qui défilent
Dinconnus apeurés qui se faufilent
Entre 2 géants immobiles
Dun coup devenus trop fragiles.

"Avez-vous vu le chef AMATO
Avec un casque et du courage
Monter dans les étages ?
Il pensait en revenir bientôt"

Ceci est lombre dune matinée
Que ce soit Paris, Sydney ou Le Cap
Subitement linattendu qui frappe
Là où personne neut imaginé.
Laigle sest départi de sa liberté
Les 50 étoiles ont cédé leur fierté
Pour réaliser quêtre une puissance
Peut signifier aussi souffrance.
Pouvoir et argent ont disparu
Eparpillés à tous vents des rues.
Brume, sirènes et vestiges
Tous les visages se figent.

"Avez-vous vu Frère AMATO
Avec un casque et du courage
Qui sest endormi à un étage ?
Mais il se réveillera bientôt"

Le Capitaine James AMATO était un frère

We send our continued deep sympathy to your family for your loss of James. There are some things in life where the pain of losing someone dear may lessen very little or none at all even with the passing of time. May the sure hope of a peaceful and better future soon be a reality and never again will family members be separated because of the violent actions of others. He touched the lives of others and will always be missed.

I had the privledge of being partnered with an Explosive Detection Dog named in honor of The Hero, Captain James Amato. Aamato is now retired, but he always gave me his best; even when long days were required. Aamato happily worked for hours, only requiring a "that a boy" to keep him content. He became known for his reliability, and ability to take on any challenge we were presented with. Perhaps we had a guardian always keeping watch.

God Bless

Aamato tired out from a fun day.

I recently watched the World Trade center movie and i immediately told of Jim Amato. His family would not remember me but I was once welcomed in their home, many years ago. As Witnesses they were good friend with my children's grandparents, The Jacksons. They invited us for a BBQ and till this day, his name lingers in my mind, when I was informed he lost his life on 911. I was serving the US Army at the time and was home on leave in NY when the tragedy occurred. I just stop by this page to remember the man that graciously opened him home to me and thank him for his sacrifice nearly 14 years ago

Jimmy and my husband Kenny were best friends. They knew each other since they were 15 years old. To hear the stories of Jimmy through my husband would make you laugh. Even as adults to see them together was like looking at two young boys who never grew up. The were so close you thought they were brothers. My husbands heart breaks every year that passes of his very best friend. We take this day every year to talk about him. The great times they had and we all enjoyed as two families together. He was a great man and a great friend. He is very missed and very loved. Rest well our dear friend.

As I research and post remembrances on my FB page "343 Days of Remembrance" - one fallen firefighter per day for the next 343 days, I am moved to tears as I read the words of all that loved Chief Amato so much.

Today is Chief Amato's day on my page. It is clear through the words of his daughter or other loved ones that this was a giant of a man to his wife, children and family.

On this tenth anniversary, I feel blessed and privileged as a current firefighter to be able to have known him if only through the words of those who knew him best.

God Bless the Amato family and God Bless Chief Amato for what he did in life.

Can't help but think of Jim . . . Tara got engaged last week; Jim and Deb's 1st beautiful daughter. What would he think of Pete? What advice would he give his daughter and new son-in-law? And then, how incredibly handsome a father and daughter to walk down the isle . . . not to mention the after party! Jim was the LIFE of the party-good times! You are thought of often, and missed beyond. At times like this, it's good to reflect on how proud you were of your children and all the blessings you desired for them - may they all come to pass. Love to all of you.

I met Jimmy when I was a teenager many years ago in Long Island. After all these years I still think about him. I remember the day he told me he wanted to be a fireman and from that day I always remembered him as an honorable man and apparently he lived his life that way. It comforts me to know he is in Jehovah's loving memory and for the short time we live on this earth he will be in ours.

On September 11th, 2001 when James Amato arrived at the world trade center, He could have ran away, being a Captain he could have avoided going into the building and sent other men in, he could have gotten out the second it looked bad. But he didn't. In the face of danger and almost sure death, he went into the building. He didn't do it because he had too, he did it because he wanted to. Bravery was his shield and selflessness his sword. He was motivated purely by the desire to help others, a great man and a true hero.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

To the Amato Family,

Hope you are all doing well.
Our condolences to your family for the loss of James Amato.
My family and I went on this site to look up the name Amato, due to a little puppy we are raising for the next 10 mos. I wanted to share this story with your family.

We are hoping to raise this puppy to someday be a hero. His name is Amato, name after James Amato and he will be training to be a bomb dog with the TSA program. They have named these puppies after the 911 victims.
We recieved him last week and he has been a joy to be around. At the very least I hope when you read this it places a smile on your face and a warm spot in you heart knowing that James has not and will not be forgotten.
God Bless

Jimmy lived in the house behind me growing up in Oakdale. We went to High School together and he was someone I was proud to be friends with. There is something special about the connections you make in High School...no matter how much time goes by, the shared memories of that time make you friends forever. The memories I have of Jimmy are all good - and my heart goes out to his family for their immense loss. I had a cousin that lost his life in the 2nd tower - he was trapped on the 89th floor. I will always think of Jimmy as one of the brave men who tried to save my cousin.

If there is anyway you can touch my heart from where you are please do perhaps my heart can be softened. I love you Jimmy.
