Luis Torres Obituary

Man of Achievements

One of the first things immigrants need to know about is money — getting it, spending it, holding onto it. Luis Eduardo Torres had an understanding of all that almost from the moment he landed illegally in Mexico from Colombia in the late 1980's and then managed to walk across the border into the United States.

He arrived with little money of his own and hardly any English, but he acquired both and made his way to Wall Street. It didn't matter that he was getting lunch for the traders at the stock exchange, or later putting the numbers on the pre-electronic-age tally board. He was happy.

In time Mr. Torres became a currency broker, working in succession at several downtown firms until last August when he was laid off. Then, on Sept. 10, Mr. Torres, 31, who lived in Manhattan, began a new job as a senior broker at Cantor Fitzgerald.

"Eddie always appreciated things a lot more, having come from nothing," said Michael A. McLachlan, a broker who had worked with Mr. Torres at Tullette and Tokyo Liberty.

Mr. Torres bought an expensive bicycle and rode it hard. He hiked. And he sky-dived, the legacy of a brief stint as a paratrooper in the Colombian military. His wife, Alissa, thinks she saw him in a photograph of the burning towers, standing at an open window, looking out over the rushing air as though ready to sky-dive from a plane. "If anyone could have calmly figured out how to get out of the towers from up high," she said, "it would have been him."

Dear uncle, I know your reading this where ever you are right now but I just wanted to say that even though i never got the chance to meet you, to hear you, to see you in person nor you got the chance to meet me, I know you were the greatest uncle, brother, father to everyone. The stories mami and mamita share about you is just all about how caring you were to your siblings, how loving you were as a son to mamita and mi abuelo and how everywhere you went everyone wanted to be close to you and share a moment with you because you were the most fun, loving, cheerful and open person to be with. you were a walking angel and to our family. Blessed be your memory and I will always love you. We all miss you.

Mrs. Torres, I read your short but beautiful account of how you are still dealing with the loss of this man in Redbook. God bless you, I pray that He gives you grace each day and that your days will be filled with happiness. You're only separated from Luis for a season, some day you'll be with him again!

DEAR LUIS TORRES:

YOUR LIFE IS SUCH AN INSPIRATION. TO THINK THAT IT WAS YOUR DEATH THAT IS TEACHING OTHERS TO USE THEIR TIME HERE IN EARTH LIKE YOU DID. WITH PASSION, RESILIENCY AND ALL WITH DEEP APPRECIATION. THOSE WHO TOOK YOUR LIFE FROM US, DIDN'T WIN. WHEN YOU LOOKED OUT INTO THE CLOUDS THAT DAY, YOU WERE LOOKING AT FOREVER, WITH GOD.

Luis, Today I was looking at pictures and stories about victims from the 9/11 terrorist attacks. I found your story and was moved on how you came to this country with nothing but a dream and high hopes. You found the American dream but it was taken away from you. I have printed your story and picture and it will hang on my wall so that I can remember all the good that was taken on September 11 and why we must pursue the terrorist that ended your life. May God bless you, your wife and children. I know you wil be dearly missed by them. Adios.

Eduardo: Today is the first anniversary of the horrible tradegy that took your life. You didn't have a parachute to break your fall, but I'm sure God gave you wings to fly to heaven.

Today I lit a candle in your memory and prayed for your family and especially for your children.

I am in a school that Mr. Torres' son attends. I hope that as his son grows up, he can find some small comfort in the fact that his father was a fine man.

Tu Prima...Lucy

I have come to know Luis' wife through my work w/a 9-11 charity, helping her and their son, born shortly after the attacks. Luis was a fortunate man to have lived with his wife, a beautiful person who has so poignantly penned her thoughts and feelings about their life and his death at Salon.com. I wish her all of the best as she continues to memorialize him through her writings and pray God's blessings for her and their little boy...

I've read A.R. Torres' articles at Salon.com. I believe this is the man about whom she spoke. I can't say anything more than has already been said about Sept. 11. I just wanted to say Luis' and his widow's story has touched me deeply.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
