Thomas Holohan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 26, 2001.
Dream Job, Dream House
Colleen Fitzpatrick was introduced to Tom P. Holohan 12 years ago through a mutual friend at a bar. "A big blond guy named Eric came to greet me as I walked in the door," she said, "but I wanted Tom" — he was the guy leaning back in a seat, quiet and smiling.

When they were newlyweds, Mr. Holohan, an auditor at Manhattan Trust, became eligible for a firefighter's spot. "I didn't want him to go," said his wife, now Colleen Holohan. "But he was so happy. Being a firefighter was his boyhood dream."

When Mrs. Holohan was pregnant with their third child, Liam, the young couple bought a piece of land in Chester, N.Y., and started building their dream house. It was a two-story colonial with four bedrooms. "In June 2000, we moved into a new house with a new baby."

He was the soccer dad who helped coach the football team of Thomas, 7, and brought Caitlyn, 5, to the soccer fields. He took them to see "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," the "Pokémon" movies and "Shrek" as soon as they were released, and read them bedtime stories, tucked them in and kissed them goodnight every night he was home.

"He enjoyed every minute of being with us," said Mrs. Holohan. "I just wish it were longer." Mr. Holohan, 36, was a member of Engine Company 6 in Manhattan.

I found the Grave of Thomas quite by accident many years ago. I was going to Roe's Orchards and saw the cemetery and took a drive in. Now, every time I'm up that way I stop to visit Thomas and pay my respects.

This photo was captured when someone offered a rose in memory of Thomas.
I wanted to share, for the ceremony that the person who put that rose made to leave.
It was taken before the ceremony 11/9/16, I took this picture when I was that day. My respect from Buenos Aires Argentina.

Tom is my cousin and I only knew him as Chip until we were adults. He was always quiet but with gorgeous blue eyes and an impish smile that could light up a room.

On this infamous day my only thought was of Engine 6 and the great guys who work there...I knew they were first due to any events at the World Trade Center....I prayed that Chip was off that day...but soon learned I was wrong...

Knowing their dedication to save and protect the people of NYC I knew we lost a great many heroes.

My heart ached for each of them, but this personal hero this sweet friend and cousin is dearly missed by his aunts, uncles and 20 plus cousins. We as a family are truly broken and yet blessed to have this angel in heaven to watch over us.

Dear Colleen,

You and your children were in my thoughts today. I hope time has healed some of your wounds, but I know dealing with Thomas's loss will always be the most difficult thing you will ever have to deal with. Today 09-11-04 I said goodbye to my husband Gary. He has been deployed to Iraq for 1 1/2 years. I feel so much pain and miss him so much already. Let's pray that we win this war on terrorism.

Take care.

Love,

I never met Thomas. My brother is a fireman in Philadelphia and as a result, the death of any fireman always makes me feel a little closer their brotherhood. Sad that a young father was taken from his family.

(I was born and raised in Philadelphia, but have lived in the Netherlands since 1994.)

I participated in a 5k Run for Peace today in Louisville, KY. Each runner picked the name of a person who died in the attack, to run in their honor. I picked Thomas Holohan. I've read all the guest entries for Thomas and he was obviously very loved. I am truly and deeply sorry to his family and friends and fellow firefighters for their loss of this brave man. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Tommy was a very dear friend of mine. We first met in the 8th grade and promply got kicked out of art class together and became instant freinds. Just a wonderful guy! In the many years following weather it was the countless sporting events we went to or if we were just hanging out at my place watching the football games it's was an honor being in his presence. It's funny, I know this is supposed to be such a sad thing and while it is everytime I think about Tommy I can't help but to smile. We had so many good times together. Tommy left a really great job to become a firefighter and I asked him one day "why would you leave such a great job?" His exact words were "I just want to run into burning buildings and save people" the excitement in his voice and magic in his eyes were something that I can't describe. True enough this wonderful person wound up doing just what he said he wanted to do.

Tom and I were in the same graduating class in high school. I must admit, I did not know Tom but I do remember him. I sensed a person who was at peace with himself, and at peace with those around him. His goodness was so evident.

My condolences and prayers to Tom and his family. May he continue to rest in God's everlasting peace.

HELLO, I DID NOT KNOW THOMAS AT ALL,BUT HE WAS ONE OF MY BROTHERS IN FIREFIGHTING. I'M A FIREFIGHTER IN TENNESSEE.IT'S HARD TO PUT IN WORDS WHAT MY FEELINGS ARE FOR THOMAS AND HIS FAMILY, BUT IN THE FIRE SERVICE WHEN WE HEAR OF A FALLEN BROTHER IT AFFECTS US ALL. I RECENTLY PURCHASED ONE OF THE 9-11 BRACLETS AND REQUESTED THOMAS BECAUSE HE RODE THE SAME ENGINE COMPANY NUMBER THAT I RIDE. I FEEL VERY HONORED TO BE ABLE TO WEAR THIS BRACLET IN HIS MEMORY, HE GOES TO WORK WITH ME EVERY SHIFT I WORK, SO ITS LIKE HE'S STILL FIGHTING FIRES JUST LIKE HE USED TO. I KNOW THAT I HAVE AN ANGEL WITH ME EVERY DAY I GO TO WORK. IN CLOSING, AGAIN I'M VERY HORORED TO CARRY HIS NAME AND WILL WEAR THIS BRAELET WITH PRIDE.

YOUR FF BROTHER,

Tom Holohan was a dear friend of mine. I was lucky enough to be his friend for 22 years.

I knew Tom as Chip. We met when we were both in high school. The first time we met we got into a fight. Things improved from there. The last time I saw him was when he visited my family when we were house sitting in NY in August, 2001. He came with his two oldest kids and we hung out and laughed about how funny life is while our kids played. In between those two meetings we had a lifetime (albeit too short of one) of adventures and misadventures.

Although the greatest quantity of my memories of Tom involve us doing the stupid and inappropriate things of youth, my most enduring images of him involve how he matured into such a solid person, how happy he was, and how committed he was to his family and to his job. He was such a sweet dependable person. You couldn't find a more contented person or one that valued his wife, kids, family and friends more.

I was in a remote area of Minnesota by Lake Superior on September 11th. By a terrible stroke of coincidence, it was exactly where Tom and I had planned on vacationing together "one day." I phoned my wife on the morning of the 11th not knowing what was occurring. When she told me, I nearly became physically ill. I could barely stand. In addition to all the other horrors I was attempting to get my mind around, I knew that Tom worked only a few blocks away from the World Trade Center and what the reality was if he happened to be on duty that morning. Having grown up and lived 30 of my 37 years in NYC, having a dad who was a 25 plus year veteran NYC fireman, and losing Tom (as well as just being an American and a human being), I'm haunted by September 11th. I'm not sure what exactly September 11th means or why it happened or how we should respond but one thing I've taken from it is how precious life is. We can all look to Tom as a role model on how to live life for the handful of moments we get on this rock.

I worked with Tom at both Chemical Bank and NatWest Markets. There is not much more that you can say baout him excpet he was a true friend and he loved his family. We ended up living near each other in Lynbrook and I would see him with his son walking his dogs. Tom would always brag about his kids and how special they were to him. Tom we will al miss you. You were a special friend.

I went to high school with Tom. We weren't great friends, but I knew him to be a good kid. I briefly ran track with him and was in several of his classes.

One thing about him that I have remembered for over 20 years is one time the class bully/wiseguy was trying to annoy and make fun of some kids. He called Tom "Tom Hula dance". Tom thought this was the funniest thing- He could not stop laughing. The guy who was trying to annoy him didn't know what to do.

I will always remember that good natured guy from high school.

Where to start and where to end a this type of note.

I knew Tom/Chip since the day he was born.

As I watched the WTC collapse from my office window Chip was in the forefront of my mind. I only know two firemen so naturally I was worried for them. I hadn't seen Chip in several years, and the last I had heard he was working up in The Bronx so I figured there was no way he would have had time to get downtown and be in danger.

I heard later on from a buddy who is a cop that the other fireman that I knew was safe and sound, so I figured Chip would turn up sooner or later. But no such luck.

A day has not passed since Sept. 11 that I don't think about you and the time we spent together when our families got together. That was a long time ago, but I now think about those days a lot. You are a great guy, raised a great family and I won't forget.

I'll end this by simply saying

"see ya later."

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Thomas. We thank him from the bottom of our hearts for dedicating his life to help others as a firefighter. Such dedication comes with a brave, warm and caring heart full of love for his fellow man. May Thomas's courage, life and love live on in those who love him and in those who he helped. May you always feel the warmth of his love radiate into your hearts. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
