Carlton Valvo Obituary

Traveler First Class

At the memorial service for Carlton F. Valvo II, friends gave his daughter letters describing an adventure-packed life.

At Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., when other students were heading home for spring break, Mr. Valvo was jetting off to Sri Lanka, because he somehow had a friend whose father knew the ambassador. "When Carl traveled, he traveled first class," said a college friend, Mitchell Barnett.

On one of his weeks off, Mr. Valvo and his mother, Coletta, met in Manhattan to drop in on the art auctions. He enjoyed them enough that later, when he moved to New York, he often volunteered to check out paintings in Sotheby's catalog that his mother was considering. Working as an international bond trader at Cantor Fitzgerald just gave Mr. Valvo more ways to see the world. He visited dozens of countries in his 38 years.

Mr. Valvo met his wife, Lori Rossiter, while attending an opera performance. Their daughter, Dante, 7, is already like her dad in her ability to take in the U.S. Open one weekend and a Jets game the next.

For the holidays, Lori and Dante have an invitation to visit the Valvos' ski home in Oregon. But then, they also have an offer to go abroad. You see, Mr. Valvo had a friend whose brother is married to a Pakistani maharani living in Morocco. . .

I lived with Carl my freshman year at NU. We rented a crappy one room above a bagel shop south of campus our sophomore year. The saga continued but sadly not as long as his light should have shined. My name is Greg Nicholas. I love Carl like a brother. He taught me so much. He loved his people like no other. He has stamped is happy, flawed, loving and joyful soul onto me forever. Peace and prosperity to his family.

No doubt a person out of the past!!!
I am a first cousin to Carlton's father and nephew to his Grandfather (Dr. Frank Valvo). I tried to make contact with my cousin ( Carlton son, of Frank) on a previous occasion but was unable to. I hope that this message might reach him as I have an heirloom I would like to get to them. The heirloom is the wedding picture of my Uncle Frank Valvo and Aunt Betty. Hopefully someone in the family will read this. I can be reached thru my email [email protected]

I knew Carl when he was like 18-23. Sweetest guy I knew. He always had a smile on his face. Never had a bad word to say about anybody. I had not seen Carl in over twenty years when I heard of his passing. God is hosting Carl now I know it. To his family and friends I wish them all the goodness in the world. I miss you Carl.

I did not have the honor of knowing Carl. But I was struck, tonight, by the remembrance of a friend of a friend, on facebook--yes, a friend of a facebook friend, you have touched that many people. I wanted to register somewhere that I understood that not knowing Carl was my very real loss.

If you are reading, Carl--somehow, somewhere--know that you are thought of and missed.

We attended St. Francis high school together. We had a class of 208 kids. Carl was an elite student and person. I can only wish I had his smarts. He was a special person. I was in new York last year and he was in my thoughts and prayers....

Dear Carl,
I can still remember those hot and sunny California summer days when I took you and Kyle to Redondo Beach in my fancy bright orange vw bug to relax, swim in the ocean and just hang out. What a carefree time for all of us!

You are missed by so many. My family has you tucked away in our thoughts and prayers and the memory of you will always live in our hearts.

We love you Carl,

I have fond memories of Carl, Dave and Harry when they were in their heyday at St. Francis and beyond. I know how much me and all of my family including my brother Harry felt privledged to know Carl, Lori, and Dante. Our hearts and prayers go out to the entire Valvo family as we reflect upon and honor his memory. Godspeed.

Carl worked for me at MW Marshall for several years. I employed him sight unseen at the request of his school mate-Harry Fry. I saw Dante read on Sunday, and should she see this, or someone who knows her, I would love to share memories of her "great" Dad with her.

Carl,

I think of you often and miss your friendship very much. I will be forever grateful for all the career and life advice you gave me throughout our friendship. You were like the big brother I never had. Often, when I think of you, I just start to laugh as the good times (and your amazing sense of humor) just outweigh everything in all my memories of you. Thinking of you and wishing peace, strength and happiness to Lori/Dante and your family and friends. Charlie

Eleven years after that tragic day, I only recently found out that Carl was one of those who lost their lives on September 11th 2001. His wife, Lori, and I became friends in Toulouse in the 80s. We kept in touch and she brought Carl and Dante to visit my country. Though the visit was short, and we're no longer in touch, my heart goes out to Lori and Dante. I was blown away by the news I received. I cannot begin to imagine how sad it must have been for Carl's relatives. May he rest in peace.

I just read about your loss in the Pocono Record. My heart goes out to your family. I watched the horror of that day as it was happening. My father was Joseph Francis Valvo and my brother was Vincent Joseph Valvo. I mention this because maybe, in some way, we were related. May God keep you in His Hands just as He is keeping my father and my brother.

Carl,
I had the pleasure of meeting your parents today in Austin. We shared with each other our losses, as my brother, Sgt. Byron Norwood, was KIA in Fallujah on November 13, 2004. I explained to your parents that I have always felt strongly tied to September 11th, not only as an American, but also because I distinctly remember that day KNOWING that Byron would be going to war soon. As the towers fell, as your tower fell, my heart broke for all of the families, my heart ached for our nation, and my heart feared what was to come. As it came to be, the powerful feeling I had that day came true. My brother did go to war, and he did not come home.
Your parents are so proud of you - that was easy to see. Your mother was such a comfort to me today as she reassured me that she would see you again someday, and that I would see my brother soon as well. I will always think of you and your family on September 11th.

I think of you often and miss you dearly. Your laugh and energy was sky high and still it keeps me going by just the simple thought of you. I fondly remember the days at Marshall’s working together. God what a blast, and our after work drink’s with the gang. Tears still fall and I am sure they will never stop falling. Carl, I miss you my friend.

I've been thinking a lot about Carl these days. How these horrible times would need a bit of him. When my best friend died from AIDS in 95, he told me to believe in love. I did. I never thought I'd miss Carl that much.

I knew Carl in high school. Seeing his picture brought me back to those days of youth and I remember him as a good natured, fun guy who played football with me. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. As a father and husband, my heart and prayers go out to his wife and daughter.

We are extremely sorry for your loss.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

To Carl's family: although I do not know your family, my parents, Dr and Mrs Austin Wilson know Dr & Mrs Valvo and think so highly of them.

I cannot imagine the pain and heartache you must feel. But, please remember WE WILL NEVER FORGET THEM. I wear my American Flag pin on my lapel everyday in honor of all those who lost their lives that dreaded day, and I will now wear it in honor of Carl.

I wish you the strength to live each day in his memory and the value he gave to all those he touched. May God be with you always.

Carl,

I never had the pleasure of knowing you. I am one of the category of persons who "knows someone (John MacDonald) who knows someone that perished on 9/11/01."

Yet though I know you not, I know you have left a mark on the people who did know you and therefore on the world you once inhabited. The mark was/is positive and its signature was your kindly smile, shared with all.

With this legacy you also leave a wife, child, and many loved ones.

Grace be with them. Peace be with you.

A stranger no more,

Dave Evans
