Lourdes Diaz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 27, 2001.
Grateful for a Chance
She had earned her high school equivalency degree and had gone to beauty school, but her computer skills were perhaps not what they could have been. So three years ago, when Lourdes Galletti was hired to be an executive assistant to Stuart Fraser, the vice chairman of Cantor Fitzgerald, she was grateful that he had taken a chance on her and vowed to do the best job she could.

Ms. Galletti grew up in the Morrisania neighborhood of the Bronx with one brother, one sister, two half brothers and a single parent, Milagros Diaz. "We had a rough childhood growing up without a father figure," said her half brother Willie Baez, 35, a city bus driver who reminisced a bit about their youth. "But she had a very strong character, very strong-willed, very determined."

Mr. Fraser praised his former aide at a lunch with her relatives in late September. "Normally he never would have hired her," because she lacked relevant computer skills, said her brother, John Galletti, 35, a truck driver from the Bronx, "but he liked her character."

While at her job, Ms. Galletti, 33, sent words of encouragement or spiritual poetry by e-mail to her friends, including Millie Mateo-Baez. "She loved her job," said Ms. Mateo-Baez, who was introduced to her husband by Ms. Galletti. "That was the best thing that ever happened to her."

As part of a service remember 911 in our community of Danville Illinois, there were glow sticks passed out with the names of all the victims and we had a moment of silence and prayer for those lost. I was honored to have the name of Lourdes Galleti Diaz on my glow stick and I will remember her especially from now on. I pray that the family finds comfort in your memories of the woman who, from what I read was determined, loved, thoughtful and an outstanding citizen.

Dear Lourdes:
Today we commemorate the tenth anniversary of that horrible, tragic day for you, for the other 3000 victims, for your families and friends and for our country. I am sure that today every American is grieving. As always I have you in my prayers as well as the others who died that day. Even though I didn’t know you, you are very special to me. We share the same name, and I have prayed for you since then. May you rest in peace, and may your family and friends find comfort and resignation. May our country learn from this tragic event in our history. All my love, Lourdes Iznaga Croharé

Lourdes,

Till this day I can't believe the tragic day. You were such a sweet person in High School. I remember you sitting in classes at Mabel Dean as if it were yesterday. It so sad to see such an innocent life affected by such evil. You didn't deserve such a tragic ending to your life. You will always be loved and never forgotten. I have not been able to visit where the buildings once stood because of the affect it has on me and knowning that so many lost their lives unnecessarily. I will trully miss you.

Dear Lourdes,

Today is the 3rd Anniversary of the WTC Tragedy. We still miss you very much and it was like yesterday that you were meeting my middle child (son) that was back then 5 months in P.R. Is still very hard to believe that you are not coming back.We still cry and especially on every Anniversary because everything comes back to us all over again. This morning we went to mass just like the past two years. We also lit up a candle like every year. I know that you may be saying why are you lighting a candle if i'm doing okay but is as a respect to someone that we looked up as a sister instead of a cousin. I always look up the sky and I see you smiling down at us and watching over us. We love you very much and you will always be in our minds, hearts and especially in our prayers. We will meet someday.

Love you very much Lourdes,

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
