Andrew Abate Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 29, 2001.
Brothers at Work and Play By day, Vincent and Andrew Abate traded bonds at Cantor Fitzgerald. In the evenings, after long days, the brothers unwound by shooting hoops or batting handballs together. On summer weekends, Andrew and his wife, Carolyn, often drove to Vincent's rented house on the Jersey Shore for Vincent's barbecue or Andrew's grilled teriyaki.

Vincent, 44, a longtime Cantor Fitzgerald employee, brought Andrew, 37, into the company three years ago. Vincent lived alone in a brownstone in Brooklyn. Hard-driving and impulsive, he was known to hop a plane to Las Vegas for the weekend, on the spur of the moment.

Andrew and Carolyn had a house in Melville, N.Y., that they were enlarging and renovating. They liked to relax in scenic places and had just returned from a tour of Route 1 on the California coast. "They did a lot of things," said Joe Vito, a cousin. "They had good lives."

I went to college with Andrew. He lived two rooms down the hall from me for all 4 years we were at C.W. Post. Honestly, he was hysterical and fun to hang around with. Good person. It's hard to believe i first met Andrew in 1983 and that he passed away almost 25 years ago. Gone but not forgotten.

I remember Andy from the Sportime gym in Syosset, we used to see each other several times a week when working out there. I still think of Andy at random times, he was always incredibly friendly, what a great smile! He was one of those people I instinctively liked, such a positive personality.

I attended Adelphi Academy in Brooklyn. Andrew was a Senior & I was a Freshman. We "starred" in the High School Play Come Blow Your Horn. I was very shy & would not do the kissing scene. He was really cute too. So one day in the Kindergarten room where we would place our books before rehearsal after school. Andrew grabbed me passionately & gave me a sweet, romantic respectful kiss. My first kiss actually. He was kind and funny, sweet & we were able to finally kiss in the play. He always made me laugh & was a lovely person. The play was fantastic & we kind of kept in touch when he first went to CWPost, bumped into eachother twice in our 20's... Although he was my first kiss, and never were anything more than that play. His kindness, gentleness & understanding of my insecurity & shyness, the way he treated me & his friendship during that awkward time has lasted forever. Best first kiss a girl could ask for.

I attended CW Post back in '80-'84 and lived on campus in the Brookville hall. There I befriended Andrew, a funny, warm, sweet man who often wore the black Brooklyn tee shirt. I remember him falling in love with Carolyn, and all of us hooking up in Ft. Lauderdale for spring break. One night, we all stayed up all night and watched the sun rise on the beach. Andrew was a pistol, and I will always remember him as a fantastic person. Every 9/11 I say a prayer for him, his brother, and their families. God bless you all.

I knew Andrew and his wife Carolyn back in the 90's when I used to see them at Sportset in Syosset. When I saw Andrews picture in the paper after the attacks on Sept. 11th, 2001, I got chills and was deeply saddened. I remembered the last time I saw and spoke to him, he told me that he was going to work with his brother on Wall St. I was even more saddened to realize that he and his brother both perished in the attacks. I'm sorry it took me so long to send this message but better late than never. My heart goes out to his family and friends and his wife Carolyn, who may not remember me but I will always remember the nice chats we used to have at Sportset. May peace be with you always.

I was just looking to see if I could find Andrew on Facebook. I worked with him at United Numismatics back in the late 80's and 20 years later, he is the kind of guy I wanted to find and rekindle our frienship. I am schocked and saddened to learn that he lost in life in the towers. I have remembered him fondly for these last 20 years and I'm choosing to keep it that way.
Be at peace my brother...

My name is Maria Elena. After so many Years, I have just learned of the passing of Andrew & Vinny and words can never express my heartfelt pain. They were great Brothers, awsome young men and very close. From knowing them in the early years, from Puma sneakers, listening to Billy Joel on the radio,Ball Playin and hangin out on Bay 7th, those were the days. This special tribute is not only to them but to ALL who had suffered and perished at the mercy of the the terrorists on 9/11. My Deepest Condolences to ALL surviving Families and espicially Mrs. & Mr. A Abate As you have been facing all this time a Great Loss, May you always be comforted by all the gentle reminders of your precious children and by the memories that will live on forever in our hearts!!So Sorry for the Loss of Your Angels!! I met Andrew in the early years of High School and were friends in those years. I was Honored when I was asked to attend Prom with Andrew at 'Windows Of The Word" Ironically at the top of the world trade center. As we danced that special evening overlooking the skyline Andy expressed to me How He felt He was on top of the world and his anticipated excitment, zest for Life,Hopes and Dreams of his future were about to take flight. I will Never Forget his beautiful smile and infectious laughter. He was indeed a diamond ready to shine!! although I was never able to get a Prom Picture to display, because we were from seperate schools, I will always have the memories in my heart. As he went off to C W Post C We lost touch for a few years only to hear from him, with well wishes for my up and coming wedding. We wished eachother Luck N Love to the future and before we hung up He Said ""SEE YA"" as he always did, Andrew felt saying goodbye was so final. I thanked him for poems he had written and we once again lost touch this time forever in life but the wonderful memories will remain in my heart untill we meet in heaven.. May God Bless You Both ''SEE YA'' Andrew and Vinny WIth Love Maria Elena

Hello!

I'm sorry I haven't found this site earlier. I am so sorry for your loss. After 9/11, I made a donation to mercyband.org ("Band" = "Bear Another's Name Daily").

Several weeks later, I received a bracelet with the name "Andrew Anthony Abate". I felt honored to have been chosen to receive it and I wear it proudly.

I have been wearing this bracelet since December 2001 in honor of him and the others that were taken from us. I never take it off.

For Mr. Abate. I never left a message on one of these, but thought I would leave one for you. It's been more than 10 years since I spoke to you and 5 years since you passed. You probably don't know me, but when your wife stepped away from her desk at work the call would ring at my desk. So we spoke almost every day and I remember hearing great things about you. You are the the only person I sorta knew who passed away on 9/11/01. Anytime there is a mention on 9/11 I think of you. I was always jealous of your Knicks and Giants season tickets.

we are approaching the 5th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks on the united states and still the horror of that day continues to haunt us.

for the families and friends of the victims this is a more poignant time for them, and they, each and everyone of them, are in my thoughts and prayers.

recently in the UK there has been a number of documentary's about the 9/11 terror attacks on all the major channels, and i, like so many others, have been watching these and the footage is still as horrifying and upsetting as the day i sat here and watched the events of sept. 11th unfold on live television.

i can only hope that with time, your pain will become bearable and easier to live with, and that one day we will rid the earth of the filth that puts a dark cloud over both our countries every single day.

my thoughts are with you all, god bless.
