Vincent Abate Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 29, 2001.
Brothers at Work and Play By day, Vincent and Andrew Abate traded bonds at Cantor Fitzgerald. In the evenings, after long days, the brothers unwound by shooting hoops or batting handballs together. On summer weekends, Andrew and his wife, Carolyn, often drove to Vincent's rented house on the Jersey Shore for Vincent's barbecue or Andrew's grilled teriyaki.

Vincent, 44, a longtime Cantor Fitzgerald employee, brought Andrew, 37, into the company three years ago. Vincent lived alone in a brownstone in Brooklyn. Hard-driving and impulsive, he was known to hop a plane to Las Vegas for the weekend, on the spur of the moment.

Andrew and Carolyn had a house in Melville, N.Y., that they were enlarging and renovating. They liked to relax in scenic places and had just returned from a tour of Route 1 on the California coast. "They did a lot of things," said Joe Vito, a cousin. "They had good lives."

In 1972, at St Frances Cabrini, I was one of Vincent's little league baseball coaches. He was our catcher (and a good one) and he could hit too! He loved playing as he always flashed that great smile of his.
After the fateful day, when I first read about him and his brother passing, I was so sad for them and the family. I think of Vinny and the other victims often as well as speak about him. As long as I live, he will not be forgotten.

Its that time of year again and my heart is heavy with sadness. A photo of you and I taken at my high school graduation party is framed and displayed on the memorial table in my home. Not that I need it to remember you. No. You are very much alive in my heart and memory.

I hope one day we meet again in that next place, wherever it may be. Just like the last time I saw you in this life when we hugged and laughed and hugged and laughed in the middle of Bay 7th St. I know the next time we meet will be just as joyful.

Your friend always

I never met Vincent, but always wondered... is there a family attachment as we share the same family name? On this anniversary, like the ones preceding it, a sadness falls upon me. I always wondered who Vincent was, what could have been had this tragedy not happened...and of course the same for Andrew too. I'm so sorry to all the families of the Abate brothers who have suffered such a terrible loss. May God bless you all and may he continue to watch over Vincent and Andrew in heaven.

Dear Vincent and Andrew,
Riposa in Pace.
Rest in Peace.

September 9, 2011

Vincent and Andrew Abate, like many others, were victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. They worked for Cantor Fitzgerald, a bond company, along with their cousin, Mike. Vincent worked for Fitzgerald since he got out of college, and Andrew worked for the bond company for 3 years.

Vincent and Andrew were trading bonds, in the 105th floor of Tower 1, the New York headquarters of Cantor Fitzgerald. They were in Vincent’s office when the plane hit, and their cousin may have been with them. Vincent (44) and Andrew (37), and Mike, were killed tragically that day. There is no way to know their lasts words, or when they died. They may have jumped, or died on impact from the plane. Maybe the brothers waited together until the building collapsed below them.

Vincent and Andrew spent every moment they could together, even their last. Often times during the summer, Andrew and his wife would drive to Vincent’s house in New Jersey, for barbeques, or just to shoot hoops. “They were together every moment”, said their mother, Elaine Abate.

Vincent, Andrew, and Mike were among the 658 employees of Cantor Fitzgerald who died in 9/11. The company had 4 floors of the Worlds Trades Center, in New York, and none on the employees in these floors survived.

Vincent Abate is remembered for his classic sense of humor, his willingness to help his colleagues, and just for his life. Andrew Anthony Abate is lived on by his wife Carolyn, and the memories of his life and personality. They are both remembered daily by survivors and family. Their lives changed others perspective on their own lives, and they are greatly missed. September 11, 2001 was a tragic day for America, and for so many families and friends of victims. “Let us never forget that day when so many lives were taken, and let us remember the families who were effected by that terrible day.” –Anonymous

-- That is the biography I wrote on Vincent and Andrew. It was such an honor for me, and I will remember them daily. I am so so so sorry for your losses that day. If you would like me to add anything or change details, please share. Thank you so much.

I used to work with Vinnie at Hilliard Farber & Co. Vinnie had a fantastic sense of humor and was always full of laughter and warmth. I looked up to him on the trading desk because he was so popular. I was offered a job at Cantor also, but I chose not to take it. I guess my destiny was not to be there that fateful day.

Rest in peace Vinnie and thanks for everything.

Vinny, you and I shared a special relationship, I always loved you and I alway will...you are missed everyday. All the times we spoke, I never knew you, Andrew and Mike worked in the towers...I always remembered you being on Water Street...when I got the call I couldn't believe it. Happy 50th Birthday...I remember calling you for your 40th birthday..We spoke and laughed...On May 23, 2011, I wanted to call you and laugh and wish you a "Happy Birthday" but I couldn't so as I drove to work, I looked up at the sky and said "Happy Birthday Vinny" and threw you a kiss....I can't believe 10 years has gone bye. It's true what they say, you never forget your first love and that is what you were to me..I love you and will never forget you, I pray that you, Andrew and Mike are together in heaven as you were here on earth.

Hello Vinny & Andrew...I think of both of you often. When we hung down the shore, I knew my friends were special, would make some of history, always so positive, always on the move, always talking about working in those beautiful buildings you worked in...after 9/11 I worked downtown manhattan, I worked midtown for the past 20 years prior. When a friend told me that I knew people who perished, I was frozen, then you and Andrew came to mind- I could only pray it wasn't true. Well...in my heart, I always knew my friends were special...I know of others who perished and I would cross myself and say a prayer every time I went to work at the world financial center....NY has changed since 9/11. You guys were special to me/us then and I want you to know that you will always be special to all your friends...and family....when you used to dock your boat, (Springsteen was always part of the tunes).. but I recall the last song on the tape was "What a Wonderful World",I often recall how we'd all help hosing the boat after a great boat ride- and how you would always be smiling...when I hear Springsteen or What a Wonderful World...I get mad, then I remember yours, Andrew's and Mike's smiles...and I try to believe that all will be okay- We Will Never Forget...I knew you three gentlemen would make history some day...miss you and pray for you all the time....you will never be forgotten...

Vinnie:

You are ever in my thoughts, even after all those years. Your love for life, your style and your force of personality all combined to make you an incredible person.

You serve as a daily inspiration for me in many ways. You were a perfect example of living life to the fullest. But for you, I might not have volunteered to go to Iraq as a soldier, or gone on to serve as a diplomat. Your death changed many lives, and mine was one of them. I will never forget you.

I just hope they have poker in heaven. We miss you, Vinnie.

Dear Abate Family,
I've been haunted for so many years that perhaps there's a family connection with you and with my dad's family.
I remember the horror of Sept 11th and just cried and cried at the insanity of what took place. I knew no one that died, but I felt like my family was ripped apart from me. One year later when there was the tribute and people read the names of the dead, I hear Vincent Abate and Andrew Abate. I just froze. Could this possibly be the family members my dad spoke of that landed in New York after WWII? I mentioned that to him and told him about Vincent (also my brother's name) and Andrew. He fell silent and the look on his face was one of deep sadness and anger at the fact that this horror hit close to home.
I'm so sorry. Even if we aren't connected by a family tree,
my heart feels your loss. May God help all of you and bring a small measure of peace.

I never knew you Vincent. I live in Arizona and on the first anniversary of that tragic day, the company I work for gave every employer a balloon with the name of one of the 9/11 victims on it. I was given your balloon that day. As we memorialized all of the victims, we released the balloons into the air and watched them travel up into the sky. I have never forgotten you, and I am glad I was finally able to put a face to your name. From all the things I have read about you over the years, you seemed like you were a pretty neat guy, and even though I never knew you, you are truly missed. God bless you and your brother, and I can't wait to finally meet you one day in person.
