Leonard Hatton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 29, 2001.
Into the Flames
Leonard W. Hatton Jr. was on his way to work in a downtown Manhattan office building on Sept. 11 when he noticed smoke billowing from the north tower of the trade center.

A volunteer firefighter and an agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he changed course "and went straight there," said his wife, JoAnne Hatton.

He radioed the F.B.I. and relayed what he was seeing, one of his supervisors recalled, "then tried to pitch in and help as best he could."

For Mr. Hatton, 45, that meant going into the burning buildings and getting people out. "He didn't have to do that, but that was my husband," Mrs. Hatton said. "He joined right in with the fire department to help people and gave his life for it."

Mr. Hatton's mother, Marilyn Hatton, said he learned a lot from his father, who was a Ridgefield Park, N.J., police officer, and that he strove to instill the same values in the children he left behind: Courtney, 11, Jessica, 16, Lenny, 20, and Tara, 21.

May the love of friends and family carry you through your life. I am Beth Knapp's daughter and just wanted to let you know I was thinking about her friends (your family). I am so sorry for this loss and from what my mom and dad told me about Lenny, he was an amazing person. My heart is with you all.

Lenny was not only FBI, but served his town as a volunteer fireman, was a former Marine, and was a bomb technician. He was very skilled, but patient and kind. He trained other Agents, and was always among the first to volunteer for dirty and stressful jobs. His gracious wife and children are great examples to this day. I miss Lenny a lot, and want to thank folks here who have posted. Sam, I was very pleased to see that young folks are still learning of 9/11. And thank your teacher for their leadership and instruction. All the comments were quite touching to read. Please also read of Danny Richards, NYPD and Army veteran, of the NYPD Bomb Squad and Lenny's friend, and his former Boss, FBI Retired John O'Neill, who also were lost that day among many heroes.

Hello, my name is Sam. I go to Shanley High School and we are currently learning about the events of 9/11 and the heroic acts that took place. I researched Leonard Hatton and I learned so much. He was such an amazing person from the beginning of his life and to the end. He had so much bravery and courage to save peoples lives and Im in awe at how much he cared about the people in the towers. He has inspired me to be selfless and help others in my daily life. I will never forget his heroic acts and my thoughts and prayers go out to you and him.

Dear family and friends of Leonard (Lenny) hatton,
You don't know me, but I just wanted to say I admire what he did on 9/11. I learned about him when I was lucky enough to be given him to look up for my 9/11 hero to write about. I just want to say sorry for your loss and that heaven gained an angel and that I was glad I got to learn and write about him and teach my friends and teachers about the great he did that day.

We always remember Leonard William Hatton Jr. every year on September 11 as our son brought home a small American flag with Mr. Hatton's name on it, from his school's remembrance ceremony on the 1 year anniversary after the attack. My son is now 23 years old, and this flag remains in our china cabinet. We are sorry for your loss and we will always remember him.

Lenny Hatton was my dear cousin. I have many happy memories of Thanksgiving dinner celebrations at grandma and grandpa Frickes' country house in Walpack, N.J. And so many Fourth of July picnics at Lenny's house on Christie Street in Ridgefield Park, N.J. Our grandparents owned Fricke's, a famous restaurant located on the river in Ridgefield Park. Lenny's sisters, my cousins Cathy and Christine worked as hostesses there growing up. And cousin Danny was always so much fun. I loved my cousins very much and am so saddened to this day that Lenny was taken from his family and friends at such a young age. Sending perpetual prayers for healing to Lenny's family.

I live on the West coast and never knew Leonard Hatton. My brother bought a flag and pole in Vacaville, Ca several years ago from a memorial flag planting to honor your memories. He gave me that flag with the tag hanging from it profiling Leonard W. Hatton, a volunteer firefighter with the same last name as ours. I fly the flag every holiday, and thousands of miles away on the West coast, on 9.1.11, we will remember and honor a man we never met.

What a comfort and blessing it is to read that you were loved by so many, near and far. As a co-worker whom you have never met, I would like to thank for your for your service, your bravery, and for selflessly putting yourself in harms way to help protect and save others. You are a hero and will be honored as such.

Eternally rest in peace, Special Agent Lenny Hatton.

Eight years have passed but I remembered you today. I hope that time has helped lessen the sadness for your those you left behind. My husband Ed was a classmate and graduated from RPHS with you in '46. His parents and yours were friends. It took a while for the news of your bravery and loss to reach Arizona. I am touched by remembrances by all who knew you and that you are still remembered today.

It has been a long time in coming, this praise and condolence. I knew Lenny when he and his family lived in the Alexandria, La. area. I was a Sheriff's Deputy and his son and my oldest son played baseball together. Lenny was a great guy. Like others have commented, when I first heard about Lenny on that fateful day, I also said that sounds like something he would do, because that is the man he was. May God bless the Hatton family and know that He has a little extra protection in Heaven now with Lenny there.

Dear Joanne & Family,

Although Lenny was 1 year behind me in PRHS he and you did go to school with my brother Tony.

I remember seeing both you guys all the time and It is so very sad that God took Lenny away from you all so soon. From what I read and have seen nothing could have stopped Lenny from going into the WTC on that day because helping people came from his heart. God bless you, your family and have faith that Lenny is watching over you now that he is an angel in heaven. Please take care.

I was not surprised to read of Leonard W. Hatton, the FBI Special Agent, running into the World Trade Center to help with the evacuation. It was always there inside of him.

I had the pleasure of going to school, playing on that same midget football team, that his dad coached, with Lenny Hatton in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey. Lenny was always the best athlete if I remember correctly in all of Grant School. I understand he went on to do the same at the high school. I had moved from Ridgefield Park before that, but always had fond memories of Lenny.

He was one of the good kids that you remember growing up with and always remember them as they were not as they are in their "grown up years". I remember Lenny as the blonde kid with the big smile. I remember Lenny streaking around the bases at the sandlot after hammering the ball out on to Teaneck Road. I remember playing football with him at the same sandlot when the season came around. I remember Lenny the kid that had it tougher than the rest of us on the Jets football team because his Dad was also his coach. I remember the admiring looks from others as Lenny performed some minor miracle in gym class. I remember Lenny walking by and never noticing the girls ogling and giggling as he walked by on the playground.

So I will remember Lenny as the small town soft spoken Adonis. Walking with all his years ahead of him. Knowing his best days were yet to come. I will remember the boyish smile with all the promises of tomorrow in his eye. I look at the old football team picture now and see it all in his face; I see the strength, the speed, the heart, the guts, and I don't wonder why he ran back when so many ran away.

In Memory of Leonard William Hatton, Jr.

I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one,

I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done.

I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days.

I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun.

Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.

To the Leonard “Lenny” W. Hatton family and friends;

It was my pleasure to know Lenny. I knew him for several years; he was assigned to the Alexandria Field Office, Alexandria Louisiana while I was an Army Investigator with the Military Police at Fort Polk. We worked closely during that time. Though we never meet Joanne, I heard many wonderful things about you and your children, and I told Lenny many wonderful things about my wife and kids also. Unlike many men, I never heard Lenny say a single word about his family that was not loving and proud.

Our jobs were rarely pleasurable; we shared much during long dirty hours on those nights Lenny and I worked together searching for evidence, while our wives slept alone. We shared a job, and a comradeship born of adversity, I knew I could always count on Lenny. Joanne will remember the many days and nights Lenny left home for Fort Polk to investigate various crimes. Because I was with him, I know that while he loved his job, he love you some much more. He felt a deep need to be of service, he got that I think from his father who was also policeman. He was very proud of his father.

An assistant United States Attorney I know, more than one actually, thought Lenny was the hardest working FBI agent he’d ever worked with. I know that is true, he was hard working, but he regretted every hour he was away from his family. Lenny was a brave, honest, and selfless man, and I’m proud to say I knew him and will honor his memory.

I know that Lenny is still serving proudly.

With all our love, the Cramer family; Charles Jr., Debora, Jessica, and Charles III

Lenny,

I don't think we ever met, even though we worked in the same office over the past 5 1/2 years, but you've set quite an example for us newer guys to follow. I wish somehow your bravery and selflessness could have been demonstrated the way it was on 9/11 without having to have paid the ultimate price. You will live forever in the hearts of those who knew you, and as a shining example of what it means to be an FBI agent to those of us who, unfortunately, never got the chance. Thanks, Lenny, you'll never be forgotten.

To Lenny,

We met only once but I did not forget you. You were at the Independent getting some food before a meeting and I was sitting next to you. We happened to meet. We struck up a conversation so easily, as if we knew eachother before. We told eachother our stories. You told me about your great family and your work as an FBI agent. You were so humble about the incredible job you did day to day and it was no big deal to you. I guess that was the incredible person you were. You humored me, you were even gracious enough to show me your badge. You told me to call you if I ever needed anything. I just met you and you extended yourself to me as if I had known you my whole life. My love and thoughts go out to your entire family for they were trully blessed to know you. I feel blessed I got to know you. I know you are deeply missed but I also understand that sometimes Angels are needed back home. Thank you for being who you were.

To the Hatton Family,

As a former resident of Ridgefield Park and a friend of the Duncan family, I often heard about Lenny and his father. My father was also a volunteer fireman (Hose 3).

While I never met your husband and father, I'm certain that I must have seen him in the 4th of July Parade down Main St. That was always a treat each year so see all the firemen and the trucks. While I was partial to Hose 3's truck and now that Lenny's truck was the big hook and ladder.

Lenny and I spoke with each other often during the brief time we served in Yemen. I remember him as an agent committed to his job, and one who spoke fondly of his family and home in New Jersey. He helped all of pass the time during the boring hours when we were stuck at the hotel in Aden.
