Eustace Bacchus Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 30, 2001.
Changing His Life
E. Rudy Bacchus thought becoming a member of the Securities and Exchange Commission was one of his greatest accomplishments. "He passed the exam on his first attempt," said his sister, Dr. Avril Anthony- Wilson. "He was pleased."

Mr. Bacchus, 48, was a successful independent trader at the American Stock Exchange and lived with his wife and two children in Metuchen, N.J. About 10 years ago, he made some changes in his life, giving up going to clubs and dancing, and becoming a deacon at his church. He used some of his earnings to help parishioners pay mortgages and college tuition, and he helped them define their financial goals.

He was attending a breakfast meeting at Windows on the World on Sept. 11.

Mr. Bacchus recently provided emotional support to Dr. Anthony-Wilson as she made plans to open a private medical practice in their childhood home in Cambria Heights, Queens. The week before the attack, she reminded him of the date of the opening celebration. "Sept. 22, I'll be there," he said.

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on October 8, 2001.

E. Rudy Bacchus, 48, exuded confidence

On the evening of Sept. 10, E. Rudy Bacchus went to the bookstore with his 16-year-old daughter to buy new textbooks for the school year.

As usual, Mr. Bacchus was eager to dispense advice to his only daughter about life's paths and what awaited her after she graduated from high school. It was common for the two to have these stern conversations.

"He was giving me a speech about how he was never going to be around all the time and that I would have to fend for myself," Carla Bacchus recalled. "I didn't take it like he's not going to be around in the near future."

The next morning, Mr. Bacchus, a self-employed stock broker, got up earlier than usual for a breakfast meeting at the Windows on the World restaurant atop the World Trade Center. The Metuchen resident was in the restaurant when a hijacked plane struck the North Tower. He was 48.

Mr. Bacchus was a confident man who was known for his snappy outfits and warm, toothy smile. Born in Guyana, he came to the United States at the age of 13 and settled in Queens. At 17, he got a job working in the mailroom of Merrill Lynch.

Mr. Bacchus climbed the ladder to the position of a vice president before he was laid off after 22 years with the company. In 1980, while he worked at Merrill Lynch, he met his future wife on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. For him it was love at first sight -- but not for her.

"I thought he was too cocky," Juanna Bacchus said. "He was always so sure of himself."

She capitulated to his charm and they started dating. Six months later he proposed to her.

"He made his nos no and yeses yes," Juanna Bacchus said. "He had integrity and you could depend on him. He never went back on his no."

Mr. Bacchus' dream was to trade on the floor and become a member of the American Stock Exchange. He succeeded, and always strove to be the best broker he could be so he could set an example for his children. Mr. Bacchus often told his daughter, "If you are a street sweeper, make sure you're the best street sweeper there is."

Juanna Bacchus said her husband followed that advice in all aspects of his life, too.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Bacchus is survived by a son, Humberto of Metuchen; his parents, Gloria and Rudley B. Anthony of Lake Suzie, Fla.; three brothers, Charles Bacchus of Queens, N.Y., Trevor Anthony of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Ian Anthony of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two sisters, Dr. Avril Wilson and Desiree Wharton, both of Queens.

A celebration of his life will be held noon Oct. 20 at the Cathedral Second Baptist Church in Perth Amboy. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the Scholarship Fund at Cathedral Second Baptist Church, 277 Madison Ave., Perth Amboy, N.J 08862.

I’ve known Rudy as my Godfather for years!!! Him my mother and grand mother worked at Merrill Lynch together for a while. I remember him and my mom keeping in contact as i grew up and went to high school. Never knew we would find out later on that he was in the building the day of the attack! I remember going with my mother to the site a few weeks after everything. But today 10/29/24 I finally went to the memorial aite and found his name which brought tears and a smile because I’m happy I was able to finally go and see his name something my mom wanted to do for so long but never got the chance too! But God bless his family and may him and my mother forever rest in peace!

Hard to believe it's been 20 years. Rudy was the only 9/11 funeral I attended. The church in Perth Amboy (I think?) was uplifting and positive. I still remember the pastor's words "He was prepared!" Prepared definitely described Rudy - professionally and spiritually. He's my role model as a gentleman as I look forward to what's ahead of me. I miss Rudy and I miss those glorious 2000's at the AMEX until 9/11 crashed it all.

I attend One Community Church in Plano, TX. We were each given a name of a person who died on 9/11 and prayed for their family. I received his name. I prayed for this family tonight for the peace and comfort only God can give to hover over you all. You are remembered. God bless you all.

It is evident fromn all the comments that I have read, that Rudy was a fine example of what a man should be. It is tragic that he lost his life on this horrible day, and I pray that each of us would honor his legacy by being outstanding citizens, parents, workers. I pray today for Rudy's friends and family, pray for you to be comforted, as I know the pain never goes away. Much love from Texas

Although it’s been nearly 5 years, I still can’t believe Rudy has passed on. . .I say this because I started out working with Rudy in the late 1970s. We both became good friends and I noticed right away how smart and polished he was about the job and getting things right. But, above all, Rudy was a sensitive and kind person, who nobody in their right mind could ever dislike!! This is what was so amazing about him. . .Everyone who got to know and worked with him simply liked and respected him. He was a guy who knew how to stay focused towards his job and had a good method of understanding people’s needs and misgivings. They just don’t come around like him very often. I worked with Rudy for about 12 years, until I later transferred to another location. Recently, I was laid off from my job after 27 years. I was later told by a few friends that Rudy had sometimes asked about me, after I had transferred to another location. . .I really regret not staying in touch with him. . .Of course, I thought we would never cross paths again. Without any question, had Rudy not passed away, he certainly would have tried to help me. . .As I often watched him help others when we worked together those 12 years. He was just that kind of a guy. . .He was a man who had a high degree of dignity when it came to matters of the human spirit. He was the sort of person who wouldn’t think twice about helping somebody in a crisis. I was so happy for Rudy when he became a vice president. . .If anyone deserved it, he certainly did. It would be easy to say “may his soul rest in peace,” but Rudy’s soul isn’t the kind that stays calm or serene. . .His spirit will live on, in the hearts and minds of those he befriended and brought so much hope and inspiration to. His is a spirit that will linger on as long as there are those of us who need people like him in our lives. I know the lord in heaven is glad that Rudy is on his side. After all, Rudy tried all his life to transcend towards helping along with the virtues all of us need to keep our lives wholesome and with a good purpose.

Today on the one year anniversary of the 9-11 attack, one of my co-workers went to a local radio station and picked up American flags - each one with the name of a victim. Rudy's name was on the flag given to me. My prayer for his loved ones is that this day finds you in the comfort of loving arms and thoughts, that you have fond memories of your dad, your husband, your brother and your son. I hope there is peace and healing in your hearts.

My thoughts and prayers to you.

We knew Rudy since he was a young man growing up in Queens. We expected great things of all the children because they each had a passion for success. Several years passed and we lost touch with each other. When we saw the picture of Rudy at different locations, for victims and read the name ,we could not believe. We are sorry for your loss.

After thhe terrible tragedy at the WTC, at our church, 3x5 cards were passed out after Mass. On each one was the name of a person at the WTC and we were asked to pray for that person. My card has Eustace R. Bacchus of Metuchen, N.J.for whom I've been praying ever since. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Marguerite Cummings

My heartfelt and deepest sympathy goes out to you and your family. He seemed like a wonderful individual to know. I hope that your family turns to the scriptures for comfort. Scriputures like Revelation 21:3,4 which talks about a promise, has uplifted me in my times of sorrow, and I hope it can do the same for you.

We are very sorry for your loss of Eustace. May his life and love live on in you. May the sorrow in your hearts be lightened by warm memories. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I worked for Rudy about 15 years ago and was shocked to learn of his passing. He was a great boss, but first a fine human being. Only last week I was telling someone a story about how we worked together and was wondering where Rudy was at the time. Then 2 days later I saw his name on the victims list. Was it faith that I happened to being looking at the list at that time, who knows. It was probably Rudy letting me know that he was safe in heaven now. (He always got the last word)

My heart goes out to his family and may God Bless them.
