Prokopios Zois Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 30, 2001.
Games as Sacred Rites

For Paul Zois, his children's ball games were sacred rites — events that took precedence over practically everything. He emmigrated from Greece at the age of 9, and was poor: he had never had time to play. As soon as his children — Stefania and Theo — were able to toddle, he began to make up for it. He coached their soccer and basketball teams year-round. Nearly every night, after work, he went to a practice or game. Frequently, he did not get home for dinner until 10 or 11, said his wife, Dorota.

"You should see our backyard," she said. "We have more balls and nets than you can imagine. He would never come home without new sports socks or sports gear he had picked up in the city."

The Friday before Sept. 11, Theo asked for a new pair of high-quality soccer shoes. The stores did not carry them, so Mr. Zois, 46, ordered them from a catalog. Meanwhile, since the soccer season was starting, he screwed new nubs into Theo's old shoes.

Wednesday, Sept. 12, the shoes arrived, Mrs. Zois said. Theo sat on the bed, crying and cradling them.

I worked with Paul at Kingsborough Community College, where he taught courses in the Tourism and Hospitality Dept. When I was a student there, he taught me airline ticketing and wholesaling. He was a great teacher and a great colleague.
He always had a smile on his face and was always willing to assist students with anything they needed.
Since 9/11, I have had his picture on my desk as a constant reminder to try to do my best to assist all the students who need help.
When I attended the services for him, it broke my heart to see his wife and kids in pain. I see from this article that his boy is following in his footsteps of success, and I am really happy to read that.
We truly lost a really nice, gentleman that day, and the world is truly worse without him in it.

I worked with Dorota at the IAB at JFK. When she and Paul were married, I was elated. They were a match made in heaven. I transferred to Tampa and then left TWA in 1990. I lost touch with them and had no idea that Paul worked at the WTC. It was only a few weeks ago that I thought about Dorota and Paul, so I Googled Dorota Zois. It was one of the saddest moments I have experienced. I just didn't want to believe what I was reading. Paul was a wonderful man, married to a wonderful woman. My thoughts and prayers are with you Dorota, Stefania & Paul Jr. I will go to St. Nicholas in Tarpon Springs and light a candle.

My family and I never got the pleasure of knowing you, but we had the honor of raising a TSA Homeland Security explosive detection puppy in honor of you, named "Zois". Zois is one of many that are fostered by US citizens for 1 year. If the puppy qualifies at the end of the 1 year the puppy continues on with further training by TSA for Homeland Security. Zois was 1 of 11 puppies in the litter... each named after 911 victims. However, she was not choosen to go into further training so my family adopted her. Zois is 6yrs old now and still very much a puppy at heart and a very special part of our family. Anyway, I had to share this with you and the readers. I urge each of you to consider contacting Homeland Security in your area and see if there is a program for you to do the same. It's for your Country! God bless you and your family.

Dear Darota, Stefania and Theo,

Paul was a blessing to know - his presence at TWA was one of kindness, cheerfulness, happiness, devotion to his family, friends and
and co-workers, and a drive for excellence in all his endeavors. Throughout all the years, I so
enjoyed hearing Paul expound about his children, his family life, his love of sports and his two countries.
He was admired and loved by his students and colleagues at Kingsborough Community College.

Darota, I feel certain that Paul's spirit is at peace knowing that you have taken such wonderful care of
Stefania and Theo. May you and your children feel the comfort of his ever-present love and care.

With love and prayers,

Was just sitting at the computer, and started thinking about the times we used to hang out playing Basketball or Baseball at PS 31 when we were young, all the fond memories came flooding back. Remember playing Basketball at the Greek church in Bayside on Saturday mornings? Or the Church in the Bronx? So many good memories. I remember when we first got our drivers licenses, and my 1st car was a Red 67 VW Beetle. All the guys laughed, and a few years later you got a new Yellow one! We Miss ya Paul, and talk about you often. May you rest in piece "My friend"

Paul,

I didn't know you personally but I'm sure I would have enjoyed playing basketball on your team. My dad coached my friends and I through the years. Words, I suppose, will never be able to express the fondness and thus dual sadness we feel in knowing Paul. He is still, to this day one of the kindest, most generous individuals we have ever had he great pleasure of knowing. Although he is not physically in our presence at this very moment, do know that he is in not only your thoughts and memories, but in my familys as well.

Dear Dorota, Stefania and Theo,

I often think back to my childhood and I am taken back by the overwhelming joy my memories bring me. Your family is in many of these memories. When I heard of your loss, I was devastated. Your family was a big part of not only my life, but of the lives of all our friends as well. I will always remember Paul's encourageing words on the basketball court and his contagious smile. Your home was a place of warmth and hospitality and your kindness reached more people than I think you realize. Your family holds a special place in my heart. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to know such wonderful people. Although our paths may not cross as often as we'd like, I want you to know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. May God Bless your family and hold Paul safe in his Kingdom until the day you may all meet again.

I've had the pleasure of knowing and working with both Paul and Dorota at TWA. In June of 2001, I unsuspectedly encountered Paul during a sales call at MMC. He gave me his biz card with his home number in hopes of organizing a TWA reunion. I still can't bring myself to discard it. My sister Anne and I attended his beautiful memorial service in which I will never forget the poise and elegance of both his young daughter and wife, standing up to speak in front of such a large gathering. You will always remain in our hearts and prayers, and please know that we will never forget your beloved husband and father.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
