What a gift Mark was to this world. In high school, his many talents made it clear that he could have been or done anything in this life. But what makes him unforgettable to me is that, whatever he did, he did with kindness. Thank you, Mark. The presence of your kindness lives on.

Thinking of Mark's family today. Mark and I attended school together in Wheaton, IL. I remember the friendly, smiling, funny, tall guy from grade school thru high school. It's just sad he was taken from this life so young and tragically. I wish peace and love to you all.

I rode my motorcycle representing Mark in the 9/11 Foundation Memorial Ride. It was very emotional for me as it was for just under 3000 of us each representing with honor a victim of 9/11. Bob Bell Nashua, NH

I never knew Mark or his family. But I live in Galena, Illinois, the county seat of Jo Daviess County, the northwestern-most county of Illinois. Yesterday I went hiking at the Schurmeier Forest, a beautiful area of wilderness that has been preserved under the auspices of the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation in memory of Mark. This incredibly peaceful place is several miles southeast of the small town of Elizabeth. It includes about 2 miles of hiking trails. For one trail, there is a brochure describing several natural features, especially the types of trees one passes. The only development is a very nice picnic shelter. This is such a beautiful and peaceful place, which serves as a tribute to a wonderful person who was lost in such a tragic, non-peaceful event. All of you who knew him would be very proud of this forest and the way it memorializes Mark. We who live here are grateful to have it.

My mind cannot conjure an image of Mark without a smile on his face. Even today, his smile, his humor, and his good hearted friendship make the pains of the 9/11 tragedy easier to bear. Thank you Mark for touching all our lives and for the continuing joy your memory brings.

I think of Mark not only every September 11, or anytime someone mentions 9/11, but every time I eat on the patio at Freddie Mac overlooking his memorial garden.
There have been few people I truly had respect for at work - he was one of them. He was an upstanding, caring, funny guy. I often wonder how his wife and son are - Mason and my daughter were born I think - a week apart - I remember how we used to talk in the pantry at least every week about changes his wife and I went thru - and changes the babies went thru.
I hope his family is well and I hope his son knows what a great man his father was.

I will always remember Mark's great humor at Janet and Ramiro's wedding and thinking that he was a really great guy. On the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, please know that Mark is still loved, remembered, and a hero in the hearts of many. God Bless Mark and all who love him.

L. Jon,
I am sorry to learn about the death of your nephew. With an uncle like you I know he was a great man. I too lost my nephew in Dessert Storm. It is just heart wrenching.
For all the Schurmeier family my condolences and be proud of L. Jon too. I am able to write this because he saved my life. It seems the Schurmeiers put themselves in the position to help humanity!
God Bless, Steff

Mark is being remembered in a very special way by both friends and strangers affiliated with his alma mater, Wake Forest University.

Jerry and Sue,
Having lived in the New York area for the last 20 years (just recently moved up to Old Saybrook, CT), I was not surprised that I knew some of the victims of Sept. 11th, but I was very shocked and saddened when Sally Kayser Irwin told me that your Mark was one of those lost that day. I and my first husband, BJ, lived across the street from Sally and Bill Kayser on Forest Avenue with our two boys, Scott and Andy for a couple of years before moving down to Arrowhead. Mark was the teenager that everyone looked up to! Please accept my deepest sympathy and forgive this way of trying to reach you, but it's the only way I could think of. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Mark's wife and child. . . Barb

We are very sorry for your loss of Mark. Our hearts cry with you.
America Cries
We see your sorrow-
and our hearts cry....
We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-
-the American people-
are beside you.
We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
