Leonard Castrianno Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 1, 2001.
Glass Half Full
Leonard Castrianno was not really a huge country music fan. But given the right circumstances, he would load many dollars' worth of Dolly Parton songs into the jukebox at his favorite bar, an East Village watering hole where rock was favored.

"The place would just clear out, and he knew that would happen," said Garrett Davis, Mr. Castrianno's friend who was often an accomplice in the song switching. "Then we could get to the bar, no problem. He hated a crowded bar."

Despite that, Mr. Castrianno, who was 30, lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and worked for Cantor Fitzgerald, was gregarious. An enthusiastic socializer, he was funny. He was also relentlessly positive.

"He would cut me off mid-sentence and say, 'Look, what's your problem?' " Mr. Davis said. " 'You always see the worst in everything.' "

But not this time. Even though they had an argument shortly before Sept. 11, Mr. Davis feels Mr. Castrianno has forgiven him, and that their friendship lives on.

Leonard, we knew you as a kid living in Willowridge as Middleschoolers at Sweet Home. You were a very sweet, fun person to be around. We had fun playing with you at The Willowridge playground, listening to Billy Joel with you. Thinking of you all of the time over the past ten years. Saw your name enscribed on the big memorial yesterday in NYC. Can't believe you have gone this way. May god wrap his arms around you and care for you.

Len, a special person in my life. Always had a kind or encouraging word to say, always smiling, always in my heart. I thought the tribute on Sunday was very touching and thoughtfully planned.

I can remember rides in "Wilber" (one of your cars)...listening to Billy Joel as loud as possible...driving around Williamsville looking at the houses decorated at Christmas time, our trip to Toronto, being a part of my receiving line at my wedding (even though you were not in the wedding party...lol)...going out in Manhattan on your 30th birthday (after letting my co-worker and myself stay in your apartment in Brooklyn for the week while we were attending a conference)...and taking us to your office in the World Trade Center...

Len, you are always being thought of...and the picture of you, Lisa and myself will be hanging on my refridgerator forever! Thanks for the memories...I love you always!

Today I think of you (Lenny), how you really were a great guy. We worked together at Wegman’s in the deli, and we often got in trouble for talking and laughing too much. I remember a party at your house where you gave me a bunch of your business cards with your picture on it and how we joked about it. I had that business card hanging on my fridge for years. Unfortunately as often happens we lost contact and when I moved that card was lost or more likely thrown away. When I first heard your name on the TV, I couldn't believe it was you and I wished I still had that business card on my fridge. Even without it I will never forget you!! The world has truly lost one of the best people to ever live. I am glad I had a chance to know you.

I woke up this morning thinking of Len. I think of him often, but as soon as I woke up today, I was thinking about and missing him so strongly!! This evening I heard that Osama Bin Laden was dead and I knew that there had to be some connection!

I met Len while I was in college in Buffalo. As soon as I met him, I liked him. He had such an optimistic outlook and an amazing personality! My Mom met him and instantly fell in love with him too. He was always so much fun to be with and one of my biggest sources of encouragement. He saw potential in me that I couldn't see in myself. When my father passed away, just one month before Len did on August 11, 2001, he was there to comfort me from afar. I wish I could have been more like him in giving comfort to his family. They are often in my thoughts and prayers. I'm so thankful that I had the opportunity to meet them. I am so thankful that I got to know Len as well. He touched my life, and it will never be the same! Rest In Peace my friend!!

I had the pleasure to work with Leonard for a few months in 1997-8 for a software company. Four of us used to carpool into work together, since he had the most reliable car in the winter, he drove the most, never with a complaint. He would have us cracking up during the hour drive to work and back home. I have often thought of him over the years and was surprised and saddened to finally learn that we lost him on 9-11. His family will forever be in my prayers.

We got to know Leonard from the Eagle House Restaurant when he waited tables. He waited on us one time and we requested him every time after that. He was such a personable, nice guy and couldn't help but like him. He would sit down at the table with us and talk up a storm. May he rest in peace.

I can't believe it's been 5 years and the tears will always be there. I graduated with Lenny and Leigh from Williamsville East Class of 1989. God Bless you and your family ALWAYS.

I knew Len hangin out in Buffalo. Once I moved to other locales, we lost touch. While we were not close, he and I had a special kind of relationship. I remember he came to a party I threw and left his business cards all over my house. I found his cards months after the party had ended. I still chuckle about it to this day. I think of you Len each year at this time and I know God is beside you as you watch down on all of us. May God bless you and all that knew you.

I am deeply saddened of the loss of Leonard Castrianno. I only heard of his death on September 11 two weeks ago from a friend in Buffalo. Leonard, so happy, so vibrant, so loyal, so good and SO INNOCENT. We lost touch after we moved to the city. My heart goes out to his dear family and friends. He was a special man whom I will admire and think of the rest of my life.

I didn't know Lenny but many of my neighbors have related the wonderful stories of Lenny and his kindness and unique ability to reach out and help and to be a kind soul at every turn.

Lenny was the paperboy of the Buffalo News on our street, and stories of his unique ability to turn a humdrum job into a unique positive experience and to stretch beyond his responsibilies have touched my life beyond comprehension.

It is my hope that my son, who is now the paper boy on Lenny's route, will relive the legacy and become the quality of man that Lenny had become.

I had the pleasure of Knowing Leonard well. Although we had stopped speaking for a time, we had resumed contact and even went out together prior to this tragedy. Leonard was (and still is to this day)the most positive person I have ever met in my life. He had such passion for life and NYC. He once told me he liked to go to Central Park sometimes by himself just to walk & watch people, that this was the most fantastic city. He knew my dreams & aspirations and I remember the last time we had contact, he congradulated me on everything I was accomplishing. You could always count on him to motivate you. I will always remember Leonard, I am his biggest fan.

We are very sorry for your loss of Leonard. May his life and love live on in those who love him. May the sorrow in your hearts be lightened by warm memories of times together. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I did not have the privilege of ever meeting you, although we grew up in the same town. Our paths crossed today when I met your father, while attending a committee meeting to build a mememorial in our Town of Amherst to the victims of Sept 11, 2001. We lost someone too that day, my brother-in-law, Sean Rooney. Your Dad and I shared that you were each on the 105th floor of the towers, you in the North Tower, and Sean in the South Tower. Our families are dedicated to ensuring that you, Sean and all those who lost their lives that day, will never be forgotten.
