Thomas Knox Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 1, 2001.
Caring, Joking, Listening
With Tommy Knox it was often the little things. The way he put toothpaste on his wife's toothbrush when he got up before her, almost every day. He'd leave it on the vanity ready for her before he left his home in Hoboken for his job as a broker at Cantor Fitzgerald.

Or perhaps it was how he made the oldest gag in the book funny again. At weddings, parties, any place, really, he slapped in a set of grotesque false teeth and worked the room in his gregarious, antic style, which never failed to make everyone laugh.

The youngest of six children, Mr. Knox, who was 31, was always the first to grab the attention of his siblings' 11 children at family get-togethers with a joke or some routine to keep them laughing.

Or maybe it was the way he listened – attentive, alert, compassionate.

"I guess it was all the little things," said his wife, Nancy Knox. "All these little, special things that made Tommy who he was and made us all love him."

The students of Blessed Sacrament School in Savannah made simple notes, each with the name of 2011 victim on it. Mine had the name Tom Knox. I have it taped on my desk where I can see it every day. 22 years gave his life in a horrible act of violence, but his name remains and I thank him again and regret his loss.

Today I looked up Tommy's obituary out of curiosity and found myself scrolling through these posts just to learn more about my Dads best friend Tommy Knox. At first, I did not think it was my place to write anything on this page, but I want everyone to know how his memory lives on every single day through all the lives he touched.

Tommy was one of my Dad's closest friends all of his life. I cannot even imagine how he feels, specifically on this day and I sometimes struggle with how to be there for him. I send him a text every day so he knows I am always thinking of him, but I know that will never take away his pain during this time.

I have many memories of my dad discussing Tommy but there are two that always stick out to me. First, when I was little, I was a huge soccer player. My dad rarely missed a game. For some reason, (I am sure a TPK Event) he needed to miss my game on 9/11. I will never forget waking up to a note from my Dad that said "Play like Tommy today. Love You. Dad." I knew exactly what that meant. I played my heart out and made sure I was the toughest one on the field, just like Tommy was.
The second story is how my dad says "Hey Tommy" every time he sees a butterfly. At first, we honestly thought he was losing it a bit haha. But, I will say there are a LOT of butterflies that follow my dad. I never doubt that they are Tommy looking out for him.

My dad never failed to remind us of his close friend. As kids, we would constantly sing along to the TPK CD and listen to all the hilarious stories my dad has about Tommy. To this day, my dad attends many events with the Knox family and it clearly brings him a lot of joy to spend time with Tommy's family.

When my dad talks about his curious daughter - well, that's me. I am sure I had a million questions when I was little (I still do today). And I am sure my Dad's heart broke every time I asked, but he never showed it. He talked about Tommy with a smile on his face, every time. Tommy clearly was one of a kind. I sadly do not remember much because of how young I was. However, my dad has done an incredible job of reminding us of the person he was and the impact he made. I know sometimes he might think that we have trouble comprehending how important he was in my Dads life. However, my Dad has continued to keep the memory of Tommy alive by reminding us of the caring, joking, and listening person/friend he was.

Keep watching over my Dad Tommy. He thinks about you all the time.

Tommy, it may have been 20 years ago today, but it still feels like it just happened. You have not been forgotten! Your name still brings a smile and a story or two to mind. I still have your button from your memorial service and I wear it every year on this day to let everyone I encounter see your sweet face. I hope you are resting in peace and continuing to look over all of your loved ones. Now that your mom is up there, I'm sure you are together. I will always remember you and your love of life, fun, family & friends! Love, Marybeth

Seeing the NY Waterway Ferries line up in tribute was very touching. I stop by your panel all the time and will never forget how cool you were.

You were always so gracious and nice to me. Many others say the same thing. Now that I have a family, we pray every night. We say the Hail Mary, and we ask for our Saints to pray for us. St. Patrick & St. Elizabeth Ann Seton are for you. Never Forget. Hazard Zet Forward.

15 years have passed. At age 15 we were hanging out at the Saint Cloud pass, trying to be like our "many" older brothers, in our own way. 15 years ago we were just enjoying our 30's. You always made everyone feel good! I just want to say I miss the "T" Knox spirit!! So many great memories, through that spirit!! Maybe that's what the Big Man needed up there. If so, ask Him to play some Jimmy Hector, the Crawl of course, and when your done, give Him a Knox head butt.......35 Man

Hi Tommy, here we are again on this anniversary. Hard to believe it's been 11 years but you & everyone has NOT been forgotten. I went to Mass today and when the priest talked about where he was when it happened, he said everyone in this church can tell someone exactly where they were & what they were doing when it happened. And it's true, we can all do that.

As always, I pray for peace for your family today, as we know the more years apart doesn't lessen the pain. If only we could go back in time and change the course of that day, we all would do that.

Love,

Tommy,

Here we are again on this horrible day. Now it's 10 years. That's a long time without all of us seeing your smile, hearing your laughter, listening to your stories & enjoying your impersonations. I can't imagine what it's been like for your beloved family to have not had you physically present at all their occasions over this past decade.

You truly were & still are a one of a kind person that we were all so fortunate to have had in our lives. Underneath your fun loving exterior was a kind sweet soul. You will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace Tommy & keep watch over all your loved ones.

The last time I saw Tommy was Saturday, September 08, 2001, at my brother Stephen's bachelor party. It was a late night to say the least, and I know he was in rough shape the next day. Nevertheless, he powered through to make it the Colts-Jets game with Denis and the crew. I spoke to him Monday night, September 10th, and recall saying to him that we should get together for the upcoming Jets-Raiders game. He said something about a wedding/engagement party he and Nancy were scheuled to attend that next weekend, but the last thing I remember him saying was 'either way, we're gonna watch that game together'- a sort of final statement (unknown to us), but one that summed him up -Dedicated; to his wife, to his family, to his friends, to having fun, to standing up for what's right, to his job, to his country. It was better to have known Tommy and lost him than to have never known him at all.
